“OMG. Did you get the Sprout?”
A few weeks ago I sent that text message to Alexandra. It was one of those moments, not unlike when we first discovered Stark or Pai or many of the other lesser-known lines we’ve talked about here, where you utterly geek out about a line of…beauty products. Just on sight alone. Lucky for me, the products delivered, too.
But more about the pretty factor. Sprout is made here in Brooklyn, which you can sort of tell just by looking at it. (Well, that or Portland. It totally could have been made in Portland.) I mean that in a good way.
It’s as if the coolest DIY chick you know teamed up with her badass graphic-designer buddy and came up with a cool new line that’s unisex, idiot-proof, pleasant to use and (duh) organic, too.
We talk a lot about DIY here, and while I’ve been known to throw some Fage on my face and call it a mask, the truth is that I’m kind of lazy when it comes to making my own stuff. (Though I’m inspired by all your cool recipes and Rebecca’s recent post How to Make Your Own DIY Beauty Products and I will try something…sometime.) For now, I work fulltime, I do this in my spare time, and when I have evenings or weekends to myself, I prefer to cook, go to yoga, run, play and otherwise amuse myself with the people I like most. But I love the concept of DIY, and I prefer simple products without a lot of fillers.
And that’s sort of why I love Sprout. The line is so simple, so clean and it just works. The cleanser is my favorite. I’ve been using it on a rash I get when it’s hot out, and it helped a lot, thanks to the tea tree oil and rosewater. It’s gentle, and when I use tea tree on my own, I always use too much and end up causing more problems than I solve. I’m also really into the makeup remover, which gets off every lick of makeup, and the toner is refreshing without stripping. Also cool is the fact that they have a vegan lipbalm option (the rest of the line is vegan—save for a lipbalm option with beeswax in it).
Now, I realize some DIY people might look at the ingredient lists below, roll their eyes and say (as we’ve all said about Jackson Pollock—admit it!): “My kid could do that.” But guess what? I don’t have kids, and I don’t want to do it myself.
