Meet Jessica and her awesome routine! Her one real problem? The occasional heat rash (on her face). Anyone have any great natural remedies for this?
Current Weather: Hot, dry and windy.
Hair: Super long, brown and wavy. It is surprisingly easy to style, although it borders on being frizzy. Not too thick, but lots of it.
Skin: Combination, fairer skin tone and extremely sensitive. I don’t really get many pimples but during hot weather I get a heat rash on my face. Lovely.
Favorite icon or star from the past: Leslie Caron. She is a gorgeous French ballerina. What’s not to love?
In the shower…
I take a shower every day, but only wash my hair every other day. I find that if I go too long between washes it gets very tangled and I end up looking like a cavewoman. When I do wash it I use Yes to Carrots Nourishing Shampoo and the Yes to Carrots Pampering Conditioner. They smell great and make my hair super shiny! I use shampoo only on my scalp and the conditioner just on my ends. I leave the conditioner in my hair while I soap up my bits and pieces. I’ve been using Pangea Pyrenees Lavender with Cardamom Bar Soap on my face and Alaffia Liquid African Black Soap on my bod which I use every other day. The black soap doesn’t smell that great, but it makes my skin feel clean and soft at the same time. I shave my pits everyday with Alba Natural Very Emollient Foam Shave for sensitive skin. (I’m waiting until this one runs out to try something a bit cleaner.) My legs get a shave less often, usually on the days when I don’t wash my hair. Sometimes if my ends are really dry I will use Burt’s Bee’s Avocado Butter Pre-Shampoo Hair Treatment before washing my hair. I use Desert Essence Gentle Nourishing Organic Cleanser on my back if I have any breakouts. Last but not least I use a pumice stone on the bottoms of my feet and rinse out my hair.
Outside the shower…
I lotion up with Alaffia Shea Butter Moisturizing Body Lotion – Unscented. I do blow dry my hair on the weekdays, but during the weekend I let it be its wavy self or if I don’t wash it, I throw it up in a bun or sidebraid. I sometimes use my Shu Uemura Essence Absolue on the ends of my hair which is something haven’t quite been able to give up yet. I mentioned earlier that I have a fantastic heat rash on my poor face that I am having a hard time getting rid of. Fortunately, it isn’t really noticeable. I have tried aloe gel which, sadly, did not work. I refuse to put cortisone on my face as suggested online, so right now I am using my own concoction of milk and water which is slowly but surely making a difference. It seems to calm the irritation while also drying the little bumps out. If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them! When my skin isn’t having a temper tantrum about the weather, I like the Acure Organics line best. I spray on the Facial Tone Rose + Red Tea first. Then I use Oil Control Day Cream. At night, I wash my face at night with the Facial Cleansing Gel Superfruit + Chlorella Growth Factor. About once or twice a week, I make a yogurt mask with 2% Greek yogurt and a couple drops of Acure Argan Oil. I’ll even throw in some turmeric if I’m feeling sassy. (Just a little tiny bit though or it will turn you yellow!) I put it on at night, let it dry and wash it off with the cleanser. My skin feels super moisturized afterwards and in the morning it’s all glowy.
I don’t wear makeup everyday and when I do, it’s very little. I use 100% Pure Mascara in Blackberry (which actually smells good enough to eat!) and their Pot Rouge Blush in Rosy. I use the Desert Essence Lip Rescue Therapeutic on my lips. I do a few swipes of Jason Apricot & E Deodorant on my pits. I actually gave up perfumes for a while, but I bought something on spiritbeautylounge.com and I got a sample of Vamp, so I use that now. Just a spritz in the air and I walk through it. I also like to do the same thing with the rose toner. Ta-Da! Ready for the day. :)
Hometown: London, England…now Phoenix, Arizona
Current weather: It’s a dry desert pretty much all the time, unless it’s winter and then it’s freezing in the morning.
Hair: Collar-bone length, uber-thick natural hair with some chemically straightened ends.
Favorite star: I don’t really have one. Maybe Oprah, I have her hair, but shorter.
I have two routines one for the AM and one for the PM. My AM one is pretty stark, so here’s what I do both in the morning and at night. I like to take shallow baths, basically I use the same amount of water as a shower but in the tub. OK, for reals, here it is:
In the shower/bath (PM)…
Before I get into the bath I use coconut oil on my face to remove any dirt and makeup, I’ll wash that off with plain warm water or African black soap and a muslin. I tone with rose water or orange water, then follow up with Pai’s Rosehip oil mixed with sea buckthorn oil (1:1). In the bath I use Dr. Hauschka lemon bath, it’s creamy and non-foaming, I apply it to my under arms with my hands. I use whatever is left to cleanse the rest of my body. Every “shower” I use a few drops or a pump of oil, homemade mix of borage/wheatgerm/camellia (2:1:1). I find it more relaxing to “shower” before before bed and it gives me more time in the morning. Once a week I’ll use a sugar and oil scrub on my legs and chest (to ward off the occasional chest pimple). I’ll also exfoliate with a small 100% Pure brush and follow up with a mask, right now it’s Juara’s banana and avocado leave on mask, which I rinse off. I just finished Kahina’s antioxidant mask and it’s divine.
I wash my hair only once a week, as I don’t produce much sebum, I can get away with it. I precondition (or dry condition) my hair with powders: hibiscus, rose, neem, brahmi and amla powders; oils: castor, jojoba avocado or almond oils; mix all of that with some Shea Moisture shea butter masque and Tresemme naturals conditioner, I keep that on for hours on a Sunday while I do chores, if I don’t have time to do all of that 30 minutes is enough. I shampoo and condition with the Acure argan duo. As a leave in I use Acure’s detangler and coconut oil. Then I blow dry with Nubian Heritage honey and black seed cream for protection, I also flat iron on medium heat with only one pass on heat.
AM – I just apply some more toner and more oil to my face and that’s it.
Outside the shower (PM)…
Due to the gentle cleansing and oils in the bath I don’t have to use much lotion or cream. At the moment I use John Masters Organics blood orange and vanilla body milk. I previously used Pai’s cream mixed with any oil I had, not that it needed supplementing, I just wanted it to last longer so I diluted it with oil without diluting it (makes sense to me). I use deodorant at night, a few sprays of Weleda’s sage deodorant, if I just shaved my pits then plain old rosewater topped off with Soapwalla. I floss and brush with a neem toothpaste.
AM – I use some more deodorant in the morning. That’s it, well apart from brushing my teeth and all that.
I don’t wear much makeup, due to many colors not being flattering on me and me not being super girly. Day to day I wear 100% Pure’s fruit pigmented mascara in blueberry on the top lashes. I pair that with Honeybee Gardens eye liner on the lower lash line, not the water line, in Passion (a deep smokey plum). If I need something extra I’ll use some high lighter, This Works shimmer balm and some cream blush by either Revolution Organics or Josie Maran.
That’s it for the most part, not too complicated.
Meet Rachel and her eclectic routine that mixes DIY with off-the-shelf, and a lot of clean with a little dirty. She also blogs about clean beauty! Woot. (PS you guys, it’s supposed to be stars from the distant past, but these Canadian twins are pretty adorable so we’re letting it slide… :)
Hometown: St. Paul, MN
Weather: Winter. It’s mostly been below zero, but we’ve had a few warmer days. Mother Nature can’t make up her mind!
Hair: Shoulder length, henna-ed, limp and fine
Skin: Mostly clear, thanks to an 8-month round of low-dose Accutane I did about a year and a half ago (I know, I know… I hope you can trust me when I say I had previously tried everything and nothing helped. It truly was a last resort). After Accutane, my dermatologist put me on a prescription anti-acne topical cream to keep things clear. I stopped using it a few weeks ago, and I recently switched from the pill to a copper IUD, so I do have a few blemishes right now. Nothing serious. I do have some scarring and general sensitivity, and I blush easily (oh, the joys of being a fair-skinned redhead).
Favorite star: Tegan and Sara (sorry, I had to pick both, they’re kind of a package deal…)
In the shower…
I start out with a DIY sugar/argan oil/honey scrub and I tackle my face, pits, knees and elbows. I shampoo and condition with Acure (the mint version for fine/limp hair). While the conditioner works its magic, I exfoliate the rest of my body with a Shoba exfoliating cloth. I only use bar soap on my pits, feet, and nethers (right now it’s Shea Moisture Frankincense and Myrrh but I switch soaps after each bar). For shaving my pits, there’s usually enough oil leftover from the scrub for a smooth shave. Everywhere else, I just use soap.
I usually only shower every other day. On my off-days, I cleanse my pits and nethers with a hot washcloth, rinse my face with warm water, and use Acure dry shampoo in my hair. I really can’t get away with washing my hair less than every other day. It’s just too fine and it starts to look pretty greasy, especially in the bang area.
Outside the shower…
I moisturize my entire body with whatever carrier oil I’m in the mood for (I tend to rotate between grapeseed, apricot kernel, and just this week I started using coconut oil, which I LOVE). I make sure to moisturize my pits, either with coconut oil or a DIY cream I whipped up (made of shea butter, coconut oil, grapeseed oil, and essential oils). Using one of these each morning seems to boost the effectiveness of deodorant. I use Soapwalla cream deodorant most days, and on shaving days I use one of those salt crystals you wet down. On my face, I use Pangea Organics Rose/White tea eye cream and 3 drops of argan oil all over my face. I do need to start incorporating sunscreen into my daily routine; I’m not getting any younger, and besides, I burn pretty easily. That will be my next project!
This is where my routine takes a turn for the dirty. I can’t seem to give up perfume or make-up. I enjoy them too much! I have switched some of my make-up products to slightly cleaner brands, but I know I can probably do better.
I use Tarte for most of my make-up products (undereye concealer, powder, bronzer, blush, eyelid primer, eyeshadow, and mascara). For eyeliner, I tend to alternate between Physician’s Formula, Urban Decay (both pencil), and Eyeko (liquid). To fill in my brows I use Alima Pure loose eyeshadow. I use S.W. Basics of Brooklyn (formerly Sprout) lip balm like it’s going out of style — it is hands-down the best lip balm I’ve ever used.
I don’t put any other product in my hair, I just blow it dry and go. On days/nights when I plan on going out or looking fancier, I use a bit of hairspray and gentle teasing to try and boost volume at the roots.
At night I remove my make-up with S.W. Basics make-up remover and a cotton ball and I wash with local raw organic honey. I just started mixing coconut oil with the honey before applying it to my face (it smells so good!) and I find that is a very nice touch for winter. Then I use eye cream and argan oil and I call it a night.
There you have it!
