Say hello to Jinna! Her routine includes some incredible goodies, but she relies first and foremost on a clean diet for glowing skin. Enjoy!
City: Los Angeles, CA
Current Weather: Sunny and dry, with a slight fall chill in the air
Skin: Combination, though my skin has stayed clear and glowing since I cut out dairy and meat from my diet (with the exception of 2-3 “treat’ meals per week). Starting to notice crows feet creeping up though!
Hair: black, long, straight, and fine
Favorite star from past: Jane Birkin. Love her effortless, natural look and Parisian chic.
I am a natural product skincare and makeup junkie and after years of rotating products I have found, for the most part, what consistently works for me (though I can’t resist trying a few new products here and there!)
In the shower…
I dry brush for 2-3 minutes (or even less if I’m in a rush!) before jumping in the shower. Before, I used to swear by dry shampoo and washing my hair every other day, but have since realized that my fine hair gets too oily, especially because I work out every day. I have yet to find a shampoo and conditioner that I’m in love with, and I’ve tried them all: Yarok, Phylia de M., John Masters Organics, Rahua, etc. I’m currently rotating between Rahua Voluminous Shampoo and Burdock and Neem Healthy Scalp shampoo. Both work fine for now, but I will definitely be on the lookout for something new once I use these up. Three times a week I do a pre ‘poo treatment of coconut or jojoba oil for 1 hour before shampooing out. I find that since I wash my hair daily, it does a good job of keeping it from getting too dry. On the days I don’t do the oil treatment, I rinse my hair with apple cider vinegar in the shower after shampooing and before conditioning. I’ve found that both have improved the overall health of my scalp and hair. For body wash, I use Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castille soap, which multitasks as hand soap and puppy shampoo! While my skin is slightly damp, I moisturize all over with One Love Organics Scented Body Serum in Lavender.
Outside the shower…
After brushing my teeth, I oil pull with a spoonful of coconut oil for about 10 minutes. I’ve read that the recommended time is 20 minutes, but I just can’t bring myself to do it for that long! While I’m swishing, I exfoliate my face every other morning with Tatcha Polishing Powder in Classic, though I have May Lindstrom’s Clean Dirt waiting as soon as I finish the Tatcha. On the mornings I don’t exfoliate I wipe my face with S.W. Basics cleanser and finish with a splash of cold water. Next, I dab a few drops of Intelligent Nutrients Spot Treatment over my face. After that’s dried, I use One Love Organics Active Moisture Vitamin C serum. This is a recent discovery and I absolutely love it. It makes my skin look dewy and glowing while keeping it moisturized. Since the weather has gotten much drier and as previously mentioned, I’ve started noticing unwanted wrinkles, I decided to bite the bullet and purchase 37 Extreme Actives cream. Yes it is obscenely expensive, which is why I use it only under my eyes and mouth, but as my mother always said, don’t feel too guilty about splurging on food or skincare since you will get a return on your investment. I haven’t been using it long enough to decide if it’s worth the price but so far, I love the feel of the cream on my skin and how hydrated it feels afterward. If I’m noticing my skin getting a little oily, I swipe Arcona’s Tabula Rasa pad over the area, which pretty much stops any pimples from forming.
I started using 100% Pure full coverage foundation (thanks for this website’s recommendation!) and I also love it. It’s the only product that provides sun protection and coverage without irritating my sensitive skin. If I’m especially tired that day, I will also use RMS “Un” Cover-Up under my eyes. I rotate among many blushes: Kjaer Weis in Sun Touched, Vapour in Spark, RMS in Modest, and Revolution Organics in Blushed, just to name a few. So far, my favorite is the Revolution Organics, as it leaves a nice pink flush to my cheeks. For eyeliner, I use an eyeliner brush and The All Natural Face’s Vegan Gel Pot in Black. I LOVE this product, as it’s the only eyeliner that doesn’t smudge and give me raccoon eyes. Once that’s dry, if I’m feeling fancy, I use either RMS in Solar or Magnetic on my lids. For mascara, I use (not in love with this and will be looking for alternatives once it runs out). For lips, I absolutely love Ilia and have 4 colors: Bang Bang, In My Room, Perfect Day, and Arabian Knights. All the colors are so different and equally great, but the only one I carry in my purse is Bang Bang. I set everything with RMS “Un” Powder and then swipe some RMS Living Luminizer (can you guess what my favorite makeup brand is?) on my brow bone, nose bridge, and cheeks. I also spritz my face with a spray before leaving. Right now, I’m using John Master Organics Bearberry Skin Balancing Toning Mist, but I have One Love Organics Vitamin D mist on standby once that’s used up.
Whew! I know it looks long, but by now I’ve got it down to a quick science. Coupled with a plant-based diet, I have seen such an improvement in the overall tone and texture of my skin. Thanks for letting me share!
We love New York Fashion Week, but we don’t love thinking about all the dirty cosmetics the models and stylists are exposed to on the job everyday. Death by hairspray? Maybe not, because green beauty is coming to Fashion Week! Don’t miss A Night For Green Beauty, a natural beauty pop-up hosted by La Bella Figura on September 4 from 5-9 p.m at the James Corbett Studio. As New York Fashion Week’s first ever, all-organic beauty venue, some of your favorite clean brands will be showcasing their products: La Bella Figura, Kahina Giving Beauty, May Lindstrom Skin, Kjaer Weis, Ilia Beauty, Revolution Organics, CV Skinlabs, Vered Botanicals, One Love Organics, Tela Organics, Lurk Perfumes, Annee DeMamiel, Hope Gillerman, Joanna Vargas Skincare, SW Basics of Brooklyn, Olie Biologique, Lina Hanson and Dr. Alkaitis.
You can expect fresh pressed juices from Pressed Juicery, a Braid Bar, and tips and touchups from celebrity makeup artist Katey Denno. We checked in with Victoria Fantauzzi, cofounder of La Bella Figura, to get the scoop on the event and ask some fun questions while we had her ear. Here’s what she had to say (our questions in pink):
Tell us about A Night for Green Beauty.
We created A Night For Green Beauty to highlight what we do that is beautiful and committed to our industry of non toxic products. This will be the first green beauty event to kick off New York Fashion Week featuring some of the very best brands in the beauty industry. It’s not just for natural lovers, but for all beauty lovers, the bonus being all of the brands create gorgeous non-toxic products. The brand owners will be in attendance and will be available to answer questions and tell their unique stories and some are launching brand new products at the event. We have a group of experts who will be able to guide the curious with tips and advice. Our organic makeup bar, hairstyling station and juice bar with fresh juices from Pressed Juicery are all going to be interactive and fun. Some of the proceeds from the evening are being donated to a NYC non-profit called Hair2Help, which offers free beauty and wellness services to cancer patients and their caregivers. This will definitely be the perfect stop before fashion madness ensues.
Clean products are gaining traction with a wider audience as awareness spreads about toxic ingredients and the poor regulation of cosmetics. What’s next for natural skincare?
I think natural skincare and beauty will become more mainstream and easier to attain for customers. There are great stores now taking notice of brands because their customer is asking for these products to be available at Sephora or Space NK or even more traditional department stores. I also think that you’ll find more interesting scientific advancement in certain products because the science is coming in and we can add more effective ingredients into formulations. For example our new Jardin de Fleurs Skin Revitalizer is full of electrolytes and enzymes from raw coconut water, but also contains super low weight hyaluronic acid, cactus flower and edelweiss extracts to fully boost skin’s moisturizing layer and collagen promotion. Natural beauty is turning the heads of those that initially thought this was only for hippie types and had no longevity. It’s pretty exciting!
What’s your favorite essential oil and why?
This is like asking, “who is your favorite child?” I guess if I had to pick just one I would say grapefruit. It’s healing, powerful, anti bacterial and it smells incredible! I think grapefruit is Karen’s favorite as well.
Do you have a favorite beauty or self-care ritual?
I rarely have time to myself these days so I try to make Sundays my time to indulge in face masks, long baths and deep conditioning my hair. I think reading and preparing a beautiful dinner are all a part of a need to care for myself and encourage my mind to stay centered and body to feel its best. I like catching up with my friends on Sundays because they make me laugh and laughing is the real key to wellness. You just have to laugh sometimes and not take things so seriously.
What advice do you have for women who want to start their own business in the green beauty industry?
Be prepared to work long, insane hours and learn to multi task. Accept the mistakes you make and instead of beating yourself up over them interpret them as valuable lessons that enrich your entrepreneur education. Forget what everyone else is doing and do your own thing. Develop thick skin because you’ll need it. Learn to take vacations in October because the rest of the year is too busy and demanding for normal getaways.
Thanks Victoria and La Bella Figura! So, who’s going to A Night For Green Beauty?
Hey all! Hope you are still enjoying these AM routines as much as we are. Please keep submitting if you haven’t yet! Today’s comes to us from Naomi, who is still using a product from the Quarterly subscription (yay!) and lots of other fun ones too… Read on!
Age: 39 (ouch!)
Current weather: schizophrenic! NYC trying desperately to molt into spring
Hair: chin length, fine, fairly straight dirty blonde without highlights but currently sun-kissed blonde (with highlights)
Skin: Fair-to-medium complexion, pernickety temperament – still experiencing a dose of winter dryness but currently pretty clear and smooth, just needing extra care and moisturising
Naomi is a regular around these parts, and Siobhan even had the pleasure of meeting her once at an event in New York. Herewith, her awesome routine!
In the shower…
Quick hair wash with California Baby Tea Tree shampoo (every week or two I use Ctonics Tantra shampoo for flakes) followed by a light condition with Suki conditioner. I use Clarisonic on my face (and sometimes décolleté) with Wei Beauty Chinese Rose Foaming Cleanser. Pits & bits get a wash with soap, currently using the one that came in my first Quarterly box (one personal care item that’s soooo easy to keep clean!). Every couple of weeks I do a full body scrub with one of the 100% Pure scrubs (not a purchase, it was free when I bought products a while back). When I don’t have a body scrub product (which I don’t tend to buy, I only use them if they came with something else) I use a body brush or the equivalent with a bit of my soap
Outside the shower…
I use one of three serums: Suki targeted bio-brightening face serum; Kahina Giving Beauty serum (a fave!); or One Love Morning Glory (compliments of a recent NMDL Friday Deal – thanks!). Then I use either 100% Pure Organic Coffee Bean Caffeine eye cream or Origins GinZing Refreshing eye cream, depending on if I feel puffiness or dark circles are a problem. After that, I us either 100% Pure Organic Pomegranate Antioxidant Hydration SPF20 or (if I’m definitely not spending any time outside) Bee Yummy Skin Food. It’s Vive Sana Polar to Solar sunscreen if I’ll be spending any real time outside, like weekends. A couple of times I week I moisturise with either Evan Healy body oil or Acure Organics Cocoa Butter + CoQ10 body lotion. I put MJ’s Herbals arnica salve on any bruises, Kahina argan oil on any extra dry patches or eczema and every couple of weeks, on days I’m only running errands or not going out in public at all, I use Kahina argan oil as a treatment on my hair and leave it in until the next day’s shampoo. Every day in winter, or as little as possible in the good weather, I blow dry my hair.
I love RMS un-coverup. Sometimes, depending on how “good” my skin is, I use Vapour Organic Beauty Atmosphere Luminous Foundation. Then I like Revolution Organics Freedom Glow Beauty Balm as blush, RMS Beauty cream eye shadow in Solar or Lunar, Shu Uemura eyelash curler, Josie Maran mascara, Anastasia Perfect Brow pencil, Dior Lip Maximiser or RMS Beauty lip balm. Okay, so now I can really see why the Desert Island Challenge was too hard for me… :)
Ha! Is she awesome, or what?
