Holy Basil! The Stress Busting Power of Tulsi Tea

Have you ever looked up from your life and wondered at your own resilience? Do you associate certain self-care habits with your ability to thrive in this modern life? This past year was one of the most personally challenging I’ve yet experienced. Looking back, I’m astonished that the stress of it just sort of bounced right off of me, and I credit some of my seemingly innocuous daily habits with playing a big role in my resistance to stress and its nasty affects. I’ve been drinking tea made from the tulsi herb for the last year, and I believe this […]

Who Do You Trust for Beauty Advice?

We first asked this question in 2012. A LOT has happened since then in green beauty. Time to pick up this thread again… let’s hear your thoughts. Since you’re here, I’m going to go ahead and assume that you probably like talking beauty—whether you’re fully clean or not. From a very young age I was always obsessed with products and beauty rituals, and consumed women’s magazines with questionable gusto—from Sassy and Seventeen, to Allure, Harper’s Bazaar and Elle. I relished reading the beauty advice from the editors, as well as from the supermodels—I’m talking Linda, Naomi, and Christy days here—and […]

Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil, Two Ways

You’ve seen it pop up in some of your favorite serums and treatments — and with good reason. Sea buckthorn oil is loaded with vitamins and essential fatty acids. I burned through a small bottle of sea buckthorn oil this past winter, adding a few drops to other serums and oil blends. It’s a lovely orange and viscous oil with a musky smell, and it brightened my skin tone considerably. There are two distinct types of oils that come from sea buckthorn—the seed oil and the berry oil. This summer, I’m trying out sea buckthorn berry oil. Both the oils can […]

How I’m Staying (Mostly) Blemish Free

We’re bringing this post back as a timely follow up to our discussion about acne-banishing toners last week. ‘Tis the season for breakouts! A few months back, I entered a phase of having stress breakouts.  This was something more than just the very specifically timed hormonal breakouts I’ve been used to.  Although Annmarie Gianni’s oil really works for those hormonal breakouts, it can be drying if used too often on the more sensitive parts of my face, plus I’m not in love with the scent.  I decided to try some new products. There’s no better way to feel beautiful and confident […]

Do You Deep Condition?

Among the strange and regrettable things that I did to my hair between the ages of, oh, 12 and 30, were semi-regular VO5 Hot Oil Treatments. Who among you remembers this deep-conditioning concoction? Just for laughs, I pulled up the ingredient list (which probably hasn’t changed in 30 years)—and Oof… Water (Aqua), Cocotrimonium Chloride, Acetamide MEA, Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) Leaf Juice, Hydroxyethylcellulose, PEI 1750, Oleth 20, Propylene Glycol, Methylparaben, Disodium EDTA, Polyquaternium 10, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Vegetable Amino Acids, Lysine Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Phytantriol, Polysorbate 20, Keratin Amino Acid, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, PG Propylsilanetriol, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin […]
