Let’s talk about clean food, shall we? Specifically, let’s talk about selecting the cleanest of clean foods. The Environmental Working Group is a research and advocacy organization whose mission is dear to our hearts. The EWG provides public information on the health issues associated with toxic chemicals in consumer products. You may know them best for their invaluable cosmetics database, Skin Deep, which indexes and scores products based on their ingredients. (If we had a dime for every time one of us looked up a product or ingredient using Skin Deep…) But did you know that the EWG has been instrumental in bringing awareness to food safety issues as well?
While the EWG believes that the health benefits of eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables outweigh the risk of pesticide exposure, they are doing what they can to help consumers make the best, most informed choices. Maybe you’ve heard of the EWG’s Dirty Dozen list, which highlights the foods with the highest pesticide residue. Did you know that they also publish a Clean Fifteen list? Yep, this is the list of produce with the least pesticide residue.
You know we’re obsessed with clean beauty products, but the real secret to radiant skin is what goes into your belly. Try drinking green smoothies for a week and tell us you don’t see a difference when you look in the mirror. To that end, we are happy to have resources we trust to guide us. Life is busy, and simple tools like the EWG’s Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen help us make smart decisions quickly. So if you’re not already familiar with the EWG, take a look around, bookmark their site, and print out their lists for your shopping trips. Oh and by the way, we heard that a Skin Deep mobile app will be released this fall. Amazing!
Are you familiar with the Dirty Dozen or Clean Fifteen? What resources or tools do you love that we might not know about?
Osmia Organics is giving you 20% off your purchase through Sunday. Minimum order is $25. Just use the exclusive promotion code NMDL20 and you’re on your way to treatsville.
If you are new to Osmia Organics, there’s a lot to love. Everything we’ve tried hits the mark. The line is luxurious and practical. That’s because the founder of Osmia Organics, Sarah Villafranco, isn’t just throwing together trendy natural ingredients. As an MD and a soap maker, she gets the chemistry. In fact, one of our favorite things is when Sarah geeks out about the science behind natural skin care. Pretty please read her article “Why Organic Soap” and tell us you don’t want to experience Osmia Organics for yourself.
Osmia Organics specializes in skin improving, problem solving products—the Detox Exfoliating mask, the Black Clay Facial Soap, the Spot treatment, and the Facial Calibration Serum—but don’t just take our word for it. Check out what you all had to say in the comments last week.
While you can’t go wrong with those products, the things that just slay us are the body oils, soaps, and perfumes—pretty much anything with an essential oil blend. Osmia Organics has nailed natural fragrance. The fragrances are fresh, heady, and addictive. The scent of the body oils has surprising staying power, and trust us, you don’t want it to ever fade away. At least one of us at NMDL likes to dab it on pulse points like a perfume oil.
Tell us what you love from Osmia Organics. What’s going in your shopping cart?
So, this topic doesn’t come up much here, which is funny since in the realm of conventional beauty products there are a ton of things out there that claim to get rid of the dreaded stretch marks. This must mean stretch marks are a real problem afflicting enough people to create a market demand for miracle cures. Am I right? Let’s talk about this in the context of natural beauty, shall we?
Stretch marks, or singular stria as they are called in dermatology, occur sometimes as a result of rapid growth or rapid weight changes. Women who are pregnant are especially prone to getting them, for obvious reasons, and they occur in the most unfortunate of places on our bodies—the belly, breasts, thighs, hips, bum—all those areas we are most self-conscious about already. Sigh.
So what’s a natural girl to do?
We’ve heard that they can be prevented during pregnancy, for example, by slathering the botanical butters and oils we love so much on stretch mark prone areas. But what can you do once they are already there? Then what? Are we stuck with them forever? That’s what one reader wants to know. Here’s what she has to say…
I was searching the blog for an answer and while I found an excellent article on scars, I couldn’t find one on stretch marks. Are there any all natural products out there that work to diminish stretch marks? Is there any alternative way of reducing them? At various stages of my life I have gained and lost weight very fast and my body has not forgiven me. I would like to repair the damage.
Alright gang, let’s discuss. What have you found that works to heal stretch marks? Is it a lost cause? Should we treat them like scars? If you have them, does it bother you? How do you deal?

You may have heard our giddy hints and whispers about a special little something from May Lindstrom Skin called The Honey Mud. It’s coming out this fall, but May and the No More Dirty Looks crew are dying to share this beauty with you. So… we’ve partnered up with May Lindstrom Skin to offer our dear NMDL readers an “advance copy” of The Honey Mud before the official launch. How cool is that?!
Here’s the deal: May Lindstrom Skin is gifting you with a pre-launch, deluxe sample (30ml) of The Honey Mud when you take home any other MLS skin treat from her site.
To claim your treat, place your order at maylindstrom.com and then send a quick email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Mention you are a NMDL reader, confirm the name and shipping address from your order, and May will take good care of you. The promotion ends Monday!
Let’s talk about The Honey Mud. May describes this cleanser as lush, velveteen, cozy. Oh it is. This blend of raw honey, halloysite clay, and botanical oils is silky, like pudding. Use it as a cleanser on damp skin or try it as a masque for 10-20 minutes. It contains active enzymes and nourishment that calm, balance, and soften your skin.
We all tried it. We all loved it. We know you will, too. Here’s what the NMDL team has to say:
“Is it weird that Alexandra and I both want to eat it? The texture is insane, like the thickest chocolate mousse ever made, so it goes on rich and creamy, hiding the fact that the mud grains are also exfoliating your skin. That’s if you put it on dry. You can also mix it with a little water on your finger tips and it gets nice and slippery, the same way honey does when you use it on its own but, again, the mud is there doing the heavy lifting. I used this a few nights in a row when I had a minor breakout and I swear it sped the time at which my skin healed—plus it kept one undergrounder from ever hitting the surface of my face. Yum.” Siobhan
“This is one of the most delicious feeling and smelling products I’ve ever tried. I’ve always been a fan of washing with pure honey so to have it combined with some of May’s magical dirt into this heaven-mud is just a little more than I can handle. Total sense overload in the best way! It also feels gentle and nourishing and has definitely been part of my get-the-glow back program. For a more intense treatment I like combining it with the problem solver too and leaving it on for a hot second more like a mask. Yet another really special product from May Lindstrom!” Alexandra
“Truly unique and crack-like in it’s addictive qualities, The Honey Mud fills the need for performance (blemish killing and skin softening) and provides an experience of texture and scent like no other. My favorite use is as a morning mask/wash in place of plain honey. Like Kirsten Dunst in Interview With the Vampire, “I want some more.” Rebecca
“From the aroma of my other MLS fave, The Clean Dirt, I got the sense that May Lindstrom is a gourmand at heart. The Honey Mud 100% confirms that suspicion. This little gem does not resemble any skin care product I’ve ever used. It is entirely in a class of its own. It resembles some kind of delectable pudding, and it feels lovely on your face. I prefer to use it as a mask, and I’ve left it on for over an hour. The skin-softening power of The Honey Mud is unreal.” Susannah
“The word that comes to mind for May’s new face wash/mask is healing. My blemishes, dry skin patches and redness were reduced after just one use, and weekly masks with the cocoa-honey scented goodness have made my skin more even-toned and more balanced. It’s a mask I want to use every day, but I also want to hoard so I never run out!” Nicolle
There it is ladies and gents… The Honey Mud!
Want to know more about our thoughts on May Lindstrom Skin? Alexandra has been a fan of The Clean Dirt for some time, and there’s Rebecca’s post about The Problem Solver. Oh and you all raved about MLS when Alexandra asked how to get her glow back.
