Product Review: NEW Kahina Giving Beauty Eye Serum With Prickly Pear Seed Oil
Prickly pear seed oil—it’s the newest hot ingredient, popping up in everything from your skincare to your acai bowl (yep, you can drink prickly pear juice). And while a few of our favorite brands have already been using it for years (other common names for this oil include Barbary fig seed oil, Indian fig seed oil and prickly cactus seed oil), I have to say that it’s such a powerhouse ingredient that I’m excited and fascinated to see it appearing in more and more products.
The oil comes from the desert, from the prickly pear cactus. It used to be only found in Mexico, but has since been grown in dry climates like that of Morocco. It’s extracted, usually cold-pressed, from the seeds of the prickly pear cactus’ fruit, and has a natural scent kind of reminiscent of hay. It’s light, and absorbs quickly, while boosting skin’s ability to retain moisture (making it SO. GOOD. for all skin types). But what makes it so powerful is that it contains incredibly high doses of the vitamins and antioxidants skin needs to regenerate, heal and repair.
Prickly pear seed oil contains nearly 150 percent of the protective, regenerating vitamin E that you can find in argan oil.
It’s also composed of a little more than 60 percent linoleic acid, a fatty acid that is essential in stimulating healthy cell production and turnover, and helps acne-prone skin regulate itself. Omegas 6 and 9, which are essential fatty acids skin needs to remain hydrated and youthful-looking, and amino acids, which stimulate collagen production and cell turnover, are higher in prickly pear seed oil as well. And it contains high concentrations of vitamin K to brighten dark spots and under-eye circles.
Remember when I said powerhouse? Yeah, I wasn’t exaggerating, promise.
A line we’ve touted since the beginning of the blog for its super clean, healthy ingredients and its dedication to fair trade and giving back to the communities where it sources its ingredients, Kahina Giving Beauty has recently added prickly pear to their infamous Eye Serum. What’s more is that they’ve just launched a concentrated dose of prickly pear in a rollerball applicator that makes it so easy to use every day.
Two things you should know about me: I’m a sucker for an undereye serum, and, while I do consider my skinare routine to be a form of self-care, I won’t add something to my regime unless it’s pretty simple and I notice a quick difference. Kahina’s new Eye Serum formula and its Prickly Pear Seed Oil Rollerball both fit those requirements.
Let’s start with the serum, which I started using first, and have been using for a little over a month. I’d used the Kahina Eye Serum before, but hadn’t really committed to using it long-term. This time, I dove all in, and I noticed a difference within a week of using it. My eyes have been less puffy and less tired looking after I apply the serum each morning, and I’ve noticed a reduction in undereye circles (I don’t have crazy dark circles, but they’ve definitely become more prominent as I age). With the new Eye Serum, I wear less undereye makeup on a daily basis because I don’t feel I need it. I also feel like my undereyes are more hydrated, hence the more awake look. I have some small smile lines that have become less noticeable too.
The application is easy too—because the formula is more of a gel-like oil serum, it doesn’t slide around or bleed into my eyes, and it wears great under makeup when I choose to apply it (and that’s what wearing makeup is all about, right? CHOOSING to wear it instead of feeling like you have to to cover something up). That texture makes it great for summer too. Overall, it’s a win-win.
Moving on to the new Prickly Pear Seed Oil Rollerball, which I’ve now been using for about two weeks. My reaction when I found out about this applicator was HELL. YES. I’m an eye serum lover (see above) but sometimes the oil application to my undereyes just completely fails. I inevitably use too much and then it leaks into my eyes and I’m blurry-visioned as I try to drift off to sleep. Or I end up with oil stains on my pillowcase—I can’t tell you the number of sleep masks I’ve ruined!
All that to say, the rollerball applicator is my new best friend. I get the exact right amount of product, no bleeding, and I can easily, gently press it into my delicate undereye area, no problem.
Ok, so remember how prickly pear seed oil is super high in vitamin E and vitamin K? This makes it the perfect concentrated oil to treat undereye circles, puffiness and dark spots. It strengthens skin cells and reduces that bluish undereye tint, which is basically exactly why we use an eye serum to start with. It’s also been targeting my fine lines and I’ve seen an even bigger improvement in my eyes’ small wrinkles since I added this to my nightly routine. Plus, that stainless steel rollerball is so cooling for summer! I love how it feels like a luxurious treatment every time I use it.
