Product Review: 100% Pure Healthy Skin Foundation

We’ve talked about the 100% Pure line multiple times (here, here, here and here, for starters) and it shows up in many a morning routine. But we have yet to really cover one of their makeup standouts: the Healthy Skin Foundation with Super Fruits.

Now I know it’s summer and the last thing some of us are looking for is a full-coverage liquid foundation that adds dew to our already-sweaty faces and then melts off as the temperature rises. Good news: This one does neither of those things.

My love affair began as I searched for a full-coverage foundation for my wedding at the end of August (!). What my initial search revealed was that “full-coverage” to me means something completely different than it means to a makeup artist—or anyone who writes the copy on foundation descriptions. I was searching for something to even out my skin tone and significantly reduce the appearance of any blemishes I have (crossing my fingers that number is ZERO come the last weekend in August).

I was NOT looking for something that made my face look airbrushed, or covered my freckles. I did not realize how difficult a task this was. I also did not want something that would be dewy. I wanted matte. I wanted nothing to add to the greasiness I know will build over the course of my wedding day.

Apparently these two things in combination are really hard to come by in the clean beauty world. I tried samples of eight different clean brands—and even started considering going dirty, just this once.

Then I tried 100% Pure’s Healthy Skin Foundation. It touts that it has full-coverage and a “satin matte” finish, so I was simultaneously excited and skeptical, as I’d been burned by full-coverage friends before.

It was love at first blend. The foundation melted into my skin just the way I’d imagined. The finish was satin matte, just as promised. My blemishes were hidden. My skintone was evened. And my heart was happy.

But the best part is that it lasted. I really put it to the test by wearing it for my engagement pics, out in the unshaded meadows of a 97-degree, 80%-humidity evening. Two and half hours later, my face looked just as good as it had when I’d left my air-conditioned apartment. That’s staying power.

Have you tried 100% Pure’s foundation? Are there other makeup powerhouses out there that I need to know about before my wedding day? Share, please!

I’m curious to see what other readers think of this as well. I am really struggling to find a tinted moisturizer with sunscreen or a very light foundation. I’m currently using Juice to tinted moisturizer but I’m not loving it. It makes me feel so greasy. And I am naturally greasy and acne prone to begin with.

Oh, man – I caved and went all back to dirty for my wedding day. I hired a makeup artist, too, and the makeup looked really, really good and didn’t make me break out for just that one day (and I am extremely acne prone). I’m glad I did it, but more power to you for finding a foundation that looks how you want all day long! I’ll have to try this! I currently like Vapour and RMS Uncoverup (not together), but neither looks as good by the time I take it off at night as it looks in the morning (usually this doesn’t really bother me, but still). The best tined moisturzer is Marie Veronique Organics everyday sheer coverage – I once strayed and I never will again.

Love the review. I’m currently trying to do something very similar for my wedding in October. I’m having my makeup done but am buying clean products for her to use. So far I’m stumped on mascara and eyeshadow (tried Alima shadow but 6 hours in it had “fallen” to my undereye). I would love a full wedding makeup piece on here! Good luck with the rest of your search!

100% Pure is becoming one of my favorite clean beauty AND skincare brands. The foundation is the best I’ve found and never upsets my extremely sensitive skin. I do wish the shade selection was larger and the packaging less temperamental, but the product is great.

Try the Pot Rouge Blush in Posey! It has a beautiful matte-but-slightly-dewy finish and lasts all day, something I didn’t fine in Revolution Organics or RMS cream blushes. After I started wearing it two coworkers bought it and now other coworkers, who aren’t in on our beauty secret, have commented how well-rested and young we look. And one has a new baby, so the blush is seriously working hard! ;) We all have very different coloring so it appears to be universally flattering.

  5. Mercedes says:

Thanks for this post! I recently placed an order with 100% Pure and have been pretty happy! It almost seems like a brand that is too good to be true.

Anyway, I picked up their tinted moisturizer, and definitely like it – my only concern has been the amount of sun protection. I’m not sure if this alone is enough for everyday wear, or if I ought to wear another sunscreen underneath. It does say “sun protection” on the bottle, but does anyone have any indication of how much, in terms of SPF? I’ve been using up some Josie Maran SPF30 tinted moisturizer, which is not the cleanest, but this is my ideal sun protection level…

  6. Ryan says:

    Great review!!
I’m curious to know if anyone on here has used Tarte’s Amazonian Clay foundation. I like it a lot, and I also have the brush that goes along with the foundation and it works so well.

  7. Jennifer says:

I use 100% Pure tinted moisturizer and LOVE IT. I also use some of their skincare products (the coffee bean eye creme and fruit serum are my favorites).

The tinted moisturizer is similar to the description in this post. Goes on smoothly, does not feel thick or cakey and provides a nice even, light coverage. I would not use it as my sole suscreen, however, 100% Pure also carries an Argan Oil sunscreen that you could use for layering. The sunscreen is somewhat thick, though, so this combination might not be suitable for those prone to oily skin or breakouts.

Can’t say enough positive things about this brand!

  8. india says:

I’ve been using Jane Iredale liquid minerals foundation for years now. It doesn’t have sunscreen, so I put on Devita sunscreen first. For tinted moisturizer I use Andalou Naturals. I haven’t tried anything else but these combos because I am so happy with how they work!

  9. cindy says:

I like Tarte’s Amazonian Clay foundation BUT its not totally natural or pure.

Pur Minerals has some good primers that work well with Tarte’s foundation. I like Vapour Organic Atmosphere foundation with RMS unCoverup on any dark spots and imperfections. Marie Veronique has a good sheer tinted product with an spf that I use as a primer or alone if I dont need a lot of coverage.

Clean foundations are tough to find. I’ve heard good things about the foundation from W3LL People and Ive tried a few products from Afterglow Cosmetics (mineral, gluten free) that I really like.

  10. Naomi says:

This is great – thanks, Nicolle! I have struggled with finding the right foundation (I don’t like to say “a good foundation: because some good ones are out there, they just don’t suit my needs.) Even on “good” skin days I need something to even out my colouring as I tend to be somewhat blotchy, and on “bad” skin days I have pimples, irritations and patches of rosacea anger to conceal… The Vapour has been good in the past but since my skin went absolutely haywire I just don’t like the consistency on my face. I have been using Organic Glam and find it is really, really good. And it had better be, because on top of the hefty price tag I get the added bonus of paying shipping – it’s a UK import only available in LA so… Still, I have plenty of budget-friendly options in other areas of make up and skincare so I indulge in the best foundation I can get my hands on because to me the canvas is the most important part of my made up look. (And mascara, but foundation first.)

I am glad to hear of a more accessible (perhaps I can even get my hands on a sample or two!) and more affordable options, I will definitely explore this!

@Katrina – I will also check out this miracle blush – thanks for sharing :)

Oh, and I second Sarah’s comment about a review on Full Wedding Make Up. I am not planning to get married, but I imagine recommendations for wedding make up would cover a LOT of requirements for staying power and all sorts of things so there would likely be tons of good suggestions!

My favourite foundation for a lot of coverage is from Lavera, but I have dry, yellow-toned skin. Lavera also makes a really nice eyeliners, which stay put quite well on my eyes, if that’s something you’re looking for.
I also like the Sante eyeshadow sticks for a subtle crease definition on the eyes.

  12. Jenny says:

I tried this when it first came out, the coverage is medium to full and its not greasy or drying its a very nice consistency but I agree that the range isn’t wide and with foundation I really don’t like to place and order and take a guess I wish their products were sold in sephora or ulta. Ulta does have some of their body products but the makeup is what is better to try in person. The lightest shade was too light and the next shade up too orange for me. Their powder is very nice though I use it as a finishing powder. I currently use Kat Von D foundation as its actually not too bad chemical-wise, but its more coverage than i really want. I may try Tarte or Hourglass next. I love Hourglass’s primer, mascara and brow pencil. 100% Pure has very nice blushes and lip glazes though I highly recommend giving those a try. I love the strawberry blush! The packaging is so pretty but again I wish I could see these all in person. For swatches though check out their facebook site they have them all there under photos, that is what helped me to decide.

I’m just wondering what your take is on the Japanese Honeysuckle?? I know there are mixed reports out there. I’ve changed a lot of my products away for 100% pure for this reason, but I am very keen to know everyone’s thoughts on it. I’m a little surprised that it wasn’t actually addressed in this post, due to the controversy.

Here’s just one websites take on it

It’s hard to know who/what to believe, but at the end of the day, I would prefer to err of the side of caution. Especially when there are so many lovely clean alternatives.

    Thanks, Megan

  14. Kaitie says:

I LOVE 100% Pure!!!! I have so many of their products and so many of them are now part of my everyday routine ie) coffee bean eye cream, mascara, and gel eyeliner! In the beginning of summer I bought their tinted moisturizer in the lightest shade and I love it! I just gives a very nice coverage and leaves my skin nicely dewy, not oily looking or anything. I have been looking at different more creamy/full coverage foundations for fall and winter as I live in Chicago and I think this may be a good option!
Love your blog, and thank you for being so amazing!
    Keep it sweet and stylish!

  15. Rebecca Bailey says:

@Megan, Japanese Honeysuckle extract has been discussed on the blog before, though I’m not sure what post it was at the moment. I always find the Chemical of the Day posts helpful and interesting! I have mixed feelings about JH. I try to avoid using multiple products with that preservative, to be on the safer side, but I don’t have a big problem with it. On a personal level, I know that I have reacted to products containing synthetic parabens, but I’ve never reacted to any of the 100% Pure products with JH (other than having a problem with a few of the gluten containing products). It is something on my radar to look at more deeply though.

  16. murt says:

hmmm this foundation has quite a lot of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in it though – are you worried about flashback in wedding pics?

The product looks interesting though – I have dry skin so I’d probably need to mix it with a moisturizer. The ingredients look like they would give a very matte finish – as you mentioned.

  17. Suzie says:

I am doing wedding makeup on my sister in about a month’s time. For anyone looking for a very clean, waterproof mascara that totally works, I would recommend Ere Perez’s natural waterproof mascara- it does contain silicone, but I don’t find that to be a big concern overall (only a 2-3 on EWG database).
For the rest of the makeup, I intend to use amala mattifier as a primer, and then the w3ll people foundation stick, which provides as much coverage as you need, without looking cakey. I’m still on the hunt for a good nude-ish lipliner though…any suggestions?

  18. Last time I tried 100% Pure Foundation it broke me out big time. So I’m reluctant to try it again. I’m currently test driving Vapour Beauty concealer with my regular Jane Iredale pressed foundation. So far it’s working out well. No break outs yet!

  19. Annette says:

Jane Iredale’s Dream Tint is a matte light foundation that sounds a lot like 100% Pure’s. I like it a lot. It’s pretty dry, with no sun protection as far as I know, so I use John Masters SPF 30 underneath. It’s a good combination.

  20. chloe says:

I’ve been wanting to try 100% pure for some time now, but there is not a store near me to check out products, and they don’t have samples online. I’m reluctant to buy a full sized product with no idea of what the colors really look like.

and @Megan: thanks for providing those links. I read through all the information, and I had no idea. It was disappointing to read 100% pure’s responses, they came across as unprofessional, and could have responded better and less defensively.

I’m also a fan of Jane Iredale’s liquid minerals.

  21. Silvy says:

I really like Juice Beauty foundation. I’ve been using the Ivory for years now; not too many colors, but they do work well. I prefer RMS uncover up to their concealer though.

First, I thought the foundation was too heavy, but I warm a little bit up between my fingers now and press it into my skin and really like the finish. It’s sort of a satin finish, and not too heavy. I usually put some Pai Chamo moisturizer, then Badger facial sunscreen, then the foundation if I need it, mostly in the center of my face. Sounds like a lot of layers, but it’s really light yet moisturizing!

  22. Nicolle says:

Guys! Thanks for all your comments!

@Sarah: I actually really like the RMS Beauty Cream Eyeshadows (though I was worried about them being too shimmery for photos in the wedding).

I also really like Modern Minerals Eyeshadow (again, I’d rec the matte versions, not the shimmery ones):

And I’ve had lovely success with the W3LL PEOPLE eye shadows (I actually used the eye BROW colors for a neutral look…)

@elegantlyeco: So sorry to hear it broke you out! I had a similar experience with the Vapour foundation, silly enough. totally just depends on our sensitivities, right? LOVE the Jane Iredale pressed Foundation though.

@murt: I was, a little, but my engagement pics turned out beautifully. Plus, I do a loose mineral powder foundation over the 100% Pure, so it’s toned down.

Mascara: My fave right now is a combo: 100% Pure Lengthening in Dark Chocolate ( paired with Josie Maran GOGO Mascara in Pitch Black ( They have staying power, together.

Glad you all asked for a bridal beauty post! It’s in the works…

  23. Naomi says:

Ooh, Nicolle, I’m so excited about an extensive make up post! I am very bored with a lot of my make up and really need some direction with the clean stuff!

  24. Terri says:

I LOVE 100% Pure! I’ve tried their foundation and tinted moisturizer. I personally prefer the tinted moisturizer only because I like a dewy glow on my face. I’ve also never been a big foundation person, just concealer. But after trying their tinted moisturizer, I fell in love. It evened out my skin tone and it’s great to use if you are in a super rush and don’t have time for makeup(which I always am these days since becoming a new mom!)… this always makes me feel pretty even without any other makeup on:) The tinted moisturizer actually contains an SPF of 20 even though the packaging does not clearly state this. I also have extremely sensitive skin and breakout very easily; this product does not make me break out. I am one of the owners at Integrity Botanicals and we carry 100% Pure’s tinted moisturizer on our website, along with their other fruit pigmented makeup. (My other 100% Pure makeup fav’s are their lip glazes, lip & cheek tints, mascara, eye shadow in champagne and lip creme stick in naked pink.) We carry free samples of 100% Pure’s tinted moisturizers in all shades that are available for free with any order.

  25. Megan says:

@chloe – No problem, I think it’s important to be informed. I totally agree 100% pure’s response isn’t professional at all! It kinda makes me think they have something to hide, or at least haven’t done their research properly.

  26. Michelle says:

I’m loving the 100% Pure Tinted Moisturizer! LOVE! I’m lucky enough to live near one of their stores though so I was able to have them help me figure out which color. I have really sensitive/dry skin, so for me the tinted moisturizer is great. I was using Jane Iredale’s dream tint prior to 100% pure and it didn’t have quite enough moisture for me. I layer the 100% pure tinted moisture over Devita’s moisturizer/sunscreen so it’s a lot of moisture, but that seems to keep my skin happy so I don’t need a lot of coverage, just something easy to even out my coloring and give me a nice dewy/fresh look which I love. I’ve been using the 100% Pure mascara too and love it, as well as the creamstick eye liner in blackberry. It’s so pretty but I have to figure out a way to sharpen it now :)

I’m intrigued by the pot rouge, the gel eyeliner and the lip colors but haven’t tried those out yet. I will have to! For those w/ any of the lip products, are they moisturizing? My lips are pretty sensitive!

I’m also curious about the skincare products as well. I’m on the hunt for a good everyday cleanser that can take off makeup without drying out my skin. I was using Weleda’s Soothing Almond cleanser lotion but it’s so pricey for such a small amount! Any tips about 100% pure’s cleansers would be appreciated! thanks!!

  27. Megan says:

Love this review as it was super helpful for me. We carry their tinted moisturizers here in Canada and our customers love them. Haven’t yet brought in the full coverage foundation as our Sappho ones have been the biggest hit – but perhaps we will for Fall as there seem to be many of you on here that have positive reviews :) Thanks again for your always interesting posts!

  28. Geeta says:

I don’t like this foundation at all, its so cakey and hard to work with+ it sticks to dry patches and vanishes from the oiler parts, I like the concept though, maybe this is the future of cosmetics.

  29. I very rarely include links in comments, but I have swatches of the full line of this foundation for anyone looking for their color match:

  30. fanta says:

I don’t like it – it gives quite nice coverage but it is too dry and too matte, I like matte finish and I used to have oily skin (after changing my cleansing routine to oils my skin actually is more normal now), but this foundation is way too dry, it gets into the pores and doesn’t look nice, my skin looks much older that it actually is, as this foundation shows all little lines, pores and make the skin very dry and looks cakey. I even tried the technique of mixing it with an oil, the application was better but effect on face still the same. Hm… Not sure which one to go for now

  31. jj says:

i’ve used the foundation too and at first found it to be difficult to spread evenly on face. But with some practice it get easier=)

  32. Julie says:

The biggest difficultly I have found in going natural is foundation. I always preferred a tinted moisturiser with SPF when I used the chemical brands and have struggled to find anything that really works as well.

I love the finish of the foundations such as RMS, but it breaks me out so badly and Kjaer Weis is not a whole lot better (only for foundation though.

I have finally found a tinted moisturiser with spf which I find quite good. It’s an Australian company Mukti Organics and it comes in two colours and has friendly ingredients like rose hip oil. I live there, so it’s convenient for me, but I am pretty sure they ship OS.
