Annmarie Gianni Smacks Down My Hormonal Breakouts

Much of the time, my skin feels strong and resilient, in spite of my being a sensitive sort.  I credit good nutrition and exercise, along with a few amazing topical products.  I still get those hormonal breakouts though.  For a week or so each month, no matter what I do (or don’t do), I’ll get several pimples, one or two of which have lasting effects.  I really like a drop of lavender mixed with Fuller’s Earth clay as an overnight spot treatment.  It definitely works, but too many nights of that in a row is drying for my skin.  Plus, it would be nice to stroll around the house before bed without my husband saying, “Hey, Spotsy.”  I finally found something that I can use as often as necessary without getting dried out, and it meshes well with my regular routine.

Annmarie Gianni Skin Care is a very clean brand that aims to be earth, mind, and body conscious.  Everything (except travel sets and samples) is packaged in beautiful and functional violet glass.  The products I’m reviewing are gluten free and vegan, though the brand does use bee products.  Read on for my go-tos for hormonal breakouts, as well as two additional standout products.

Herbal Facial Oil for Oily and Acne Prone Skin:  I was honestly surprised at how well this works.  When my breakout week is at hand, I start applying this oil at night, only to my lower cheeks and jawline.  This isn’t something that should go all over my dry skin, but those with oilier skin could use it all over the face.  I’ve been through a few cycles with it now, so I’m convinced.  It prevents things from getting out of hand, to the point where I’m not doing any special cover-up routine the next morning.  Regardless of my cycle, if it looks like a blemish is coming, I use this as a spot treatment night or day.  If I squeeze a spot (go ahead, judge me), this oil applied afterward keeps things in control with anti-inflammatory action.  The herbal scent is acceptable, and though I’m not in love with it, for the performance I don’t need to be. ($34.95/15 ml)

Rosemary Toning Mist:  This antimicrobial and hormone balancing plant makes the perfect hydrosol to accompany the Herbal Facial Oil.  I only use it where I’m applying the oil.  It smells just like fresh rosemary. ($29.95/50 ml)

Neroli Toning Mist:  Annmarie really does make some superior quality hydrosols.  Neroli is soothing to skin, calming to the mind, and just plain awesome.  It’s in my regular rotation. ($27.95/50 ml)

Coconut Body Oil:  This glides on and absorbs wonderfully.  The scent is light and unique, designed to keep you heart centered and calm.  It has triggered my interest in other products scented with frankincense (the smell of coconut is present but subtle).  I’m quite picky about body oils, and this one is special. ($29.95/100 ml or $54.95/200 ml)

What have you tried from Annmarie Gianni?

It’s funny that you have posted about this line today. My sister (who used to be an estitician and who I have finally convinced to clean up her beauty regime) just sent me a link to Annmarie Gianni. I had never heard of this brand and was curious. I am glad to have some back up information and a trusted review. I too suffer from hormonal acne and will see if any of her products are readily available up here in the Great White North,

@Rebecca I’m really intrigued by the Coconut Body Oil. I’m always drawn to products with frankincense oil but I’ve never actually smelled it. Could you describe the scent of frankincense? Also, I noticed that the body oil has peru balsam oil… does that contribute a vanilla scent to the overall aroma of the product? I’ve heard that it is vanilla-like.

I went through a few of her products several years ago – the aloe herb facial cleanser, the eye cream, the neroli toning mist, the clay mask, and the coconut body oil. They were nice, for sure, and I like how clean they are, but I suppose they didn’t seem “luxurious” enough to me – kind of like Dr. Alkaitis. More on the hippy end, than the luxe end. I know this isn’t important to everyone, and effectiveness surely trumps any preference for luxury, but as someone without really problem skin and not very brand loyal, I haven’t repurchased anything from Annmarie Gianni. If I did though, it would be the aloe facial cleanser, and the neroli toning mist <3

I am absolutely obsessed with Annmarie’s line, I have been using it religiously for two years now and my skin has never been better. I love the dead sea scrub, which I buy multiples of at a time, because it is amazing. I use the Neroli facial toning mist every day (it smells amazing) and the anti aging facial oil every day, and those three things together have made such a difference on my sun spots (I have a few melasma spots from those darn birth control pills I took for years). I have actually gottent my husband to use the herbal facial oil everyday, he loves it after shaving and it helps deal with his ingrown facial hairs. I would recommend this brand to anyone looking for a very clean line of simple, powerful products. I love making my own beauty products, I usually make my own body butters and such, so I haven’t tried the body oil, but I am seriously hooked on her facial products. Love to see them featured here!

Thanks for sharing another helpful review, Rebecca. The part about your husband calling you “spotsy” made me laugh! I’m going to have to order the coconut body oil – I’m excited that it has frankincense. I use the Tata Harper stress aromatherapy several times a day as I’ve found the frankincense in it to be incredibly calming & soothing. I’m so pleased to now learn of a body oil (I ADORE body oils) with frankincense!

  6. Elle Griffin says:

Hormonal breakouts in a natural cycle are caused by a luteal phase progesterone dump! This is only exacerbated if you are on the pill or other hormonal methods of birth control (we’re talking estrogen withdrawals! Not fun!) Either way, your hormones are at their all time lowest during your period yet most of us keep on going as if we are ovulating (when hormones are at their highest!). The absolute best thing you can do to get rid of “that time of the month” acne is to take it easy the week before and during your period. That means sleep more, eat more, move less, and get plenty of R&R. If you listen to your body you will absolutely heal your hormonal breakouts once and for all!!

  7. Erin says:

Did you guys know that lavender is a hormone disruptor?

  8. Rebecca Bailey says:

@Elle, I’m all about healing from the inside out. In spite of (mostly) excellent nutrition, listening to my body, etc., perimenopause has been kicking my butt for about 8 years now. I admit my sleep could be better, but my insides are in a state of constant flux and I really need some topical help.

  9. Rebecca Bailey says:

@Sydney, I’ll have to get home and smell it again, and see if I can describe.

  10. Helena says:

Great review! I have raging hormonal acne currently – it does pass but my face is a mess during this time of the month. I just checked out Annemarie’s site and ended up ordering the anti-aging sample kit for $10, free shipping and you get a $10 off coupon your first order of a full sized product. Not a bad deal especially if you are definitely planning on buying something (Neroli mist, I’m looking at you!).

  11. Annette says:

So dang excited to meet this brand today. Will definitely be ordering!

  12. cindy says:

I am in love with Annmarie Gianni’s skincare. I swear by that oil for acne prone skin, I think it works miracles! All of her products are truly amazing and worth the splurge!

  13. Rebecca Bailey says:

@Sydney, I’m going to go with woodsy for the frankincense scent. Really it’s pretty unique. For the overall scent of the oil, I’d say woodsy coconut with a bit of lavender. I don’t get vanilla from it.

  14. Geeta says:

I so hear Elle Griffin with the hormonal fluctuations, before switching to natural/organic I used to get breakouts about 2 weeks before my period was due. Since I have changed to natural skincare over 5 years ago, I do get increased oiliness- no breakouts or spots!! I believe the right skicnare line will address the breakout problem even though hormones have the control on one’s body and skin!! You know your skincare is working when it address these types of problems. foe the past 2 years I have been using So Pure Skincare.

  15. Melanie says:

I am so thrilled to see this Annmarie Gianni mentioned here! The first ingredient in all of their products is *Love*. And I am in completely love with her Aloe Herb Cleanser and have been using it daily for almost a year. My skin looks better for it. She offers excellent sampler sets as well. I highly recommend this brand! Thanks for featuring it, Rebecca!

  16. Ellen says:

Rebecca, I know exactly what you are talking about. Peri-menopause was kicking my butt so badly that I had to develop my own line so that I could fight wrinkles and blemishes at the same time! Let me know if you’d like to try it out and I can send you some samples.

  17. Hello Lovelies

Thank you so much for the love and the great headline, we love it! So happy our line for Oily?Acne prone skin seems so popular, it seems odd (to some) to put oil onto oily skin but it just depends what is infused into the oil (and do we have some goodies in there for those with acne related problems).

Thank you for all the kind words, we have built our business from word of mouth and cannot than you enough for helping spread the word of clean skin care.

We would love to see you over at our Facebook page where we post daily inspiration and weekly deals (today is deal day!) https://www.facebook.com/AnnMarieSkincare

Make it a wonder-filled day and thank you again for all the love, we do feel loved :)

Annmarie’s Dead Sea Scrub is fab! It works really well for my oily/acne prone skin. I use it as a spot treatment and it helps to speed up healing of acne spots. I like to dab some on and leave it overnight. It doesn’t dry up your skin like tea tree oil does so the spot heals really nicely and doesn’t leave an obvious mark. At least that is what works well for me. Love it as a light mask which I will apply before a shower and then lightly scrub it off after I step out. It’s my holy grail product (: Not to mention, it leaves your skin really smooth and soft!

  19. Isabella B says:

I’ve been using AMG products for a few months now and just washed my face with the citrus mint cleanser followed by the Dead Sea scrub. Oh my, if you buy one thing, get the scrub. Amazing. Like a mini microdermabrasion. The repair serum has significantly lightened the sun spots on my face. Finally a product that works and is good for your skin. Enjoy
