Product Review: Meet Red Apple Lipstick, My New Love

I’m so excited about this brand I hardly know where to start.  I’ve got lip issues, and wrote about my travails and subsequent salvation here.  I still love those brands, but the combination of performance, balmy texture, gorgeous colors, smash-bang website, and super deals has me hooked on Red Apple.  They hit all my important points, in terms of product performance as well as being vegan and gluten free.  The Red Apple website outdoes most cosmetics companies.  It gives detailed, accurate verbal descriptions of the colors, mentions which skin tones can wear a shade best, includes customer reviews, and – my favorite thing – has pics of women of different ethnicities/skin tones wearing the various shades.

The prices are quite reasonable to begin with, and there are some amazing deals to be had, like 20% off your first purchase for “joining” (essentially just signing up to receive e-mails).  Every month you’ll receive another 20% off code, plus everyday deals like buy 2 get the 3rd half off, etc.  And if you are looking to dump your dirty cosmetics, check out their Trade In program.

Never before has a single lipstick brand given me both the perfect red and the perfect nude.  You know how you try on a new lipstick shade, look up close in the mirror, back up a little, look away from your reflection and look back, hold up different clothes to see how it looks and then go, okay, that could work.  But other times you put on a color and just immediately know, yes – that’s my shade!  I’ve found a few of those from Red Apple.

Here are my favorites:

Strawberry Lips:  Now I know why I’ve had so much trouble finding red lipstick.  Apparently I need a brown-based red for my pale olive skin, and the fantastic info on the Red Apple site helped me figure this out.  I would not have imagined I’d want a shade called “strawberry,” but it’s perfect.  Just.  Perfect.

Naughty: While I don’t find it particularly naughty, it is a fabulous creamy nude.  I didn’t really get the point of a nude lip until I tried this.  It’s polished without in any way overdoing things.

Flirt With Me:  This one is a neutral with a bit of gold sparkle.  On me, it’s similar to Naughty but with some shimmer.

Drama:  Another brown-based red, this time with shimmer.  It’s got the drama for sure.

New York (a bit more pink than Naughty) deserves an honorable mention, and if you would prefer a gloss that says HEY LOOK AT MY LIPS, try Firestorm.  I’m not much of a liner gal (maybe I just need more practice), but I’ve tried a couple of the retractable versions and I recommend them.

So, how many of you went to the Red Apple site before you even finished reading this post?  Have you, or will you, try this brand??

Not to change the subject but where is Siobhan? She hasn’t posted since January 25.

Love this post! I’ve never tried this brand before, but I am a sucker for lippies, and I haven’t actually found one that I really like. I have a question: what do the lipsticks taste/smell like? I really disliked the way Ilia lippies tasted, although I seem to be the only one who finds it off-putting…

I’ve only read the full post before going directly to their website because it was you writing it… But I’m off now.
And no, I haven’t tried this brand or even heard of them before. That is why I love reviews!
    Thank you!

@Helen, some shades, including Strawberry Lips and Flirt With Me, have vanilla and smell/taste mildly of that. Drama and Naughty are part of the X series, and don’t have a particular flavor to me. Check this out for ingredients: All the shades I’ve tried have a little bit of a waxy taste/smell from the plant waxes in the formula. It’s very mild and fades quickly after application. I’m pretty sensitive about this aspect of lipsticks, and in my opinion Red Apple is better in smell and flavor than most lip colors.

I followed you on GreenBody/GreenPlanet hair care and love it. I followed you on DIY deodorant (different recipe than yours) even though I was sure there was no way it would work for sweaty, smelly me, and of course it’s better than all the dirty stuff I’ve used. So I only had to read the first paragraph before I was reaching for my credit card. I’ve been dying for new lipstick and holding off on buying a new Ilia because it’s a little pricey for me right now. So happy to read this review!

Just fyi, it looks like some of their lipstick shades (Summer passion line) have retinyl palmitate (vitamin A) listed as an ingredient, which gets an 8 on skindeep. Might consider choosing colors that avoid this ingredient!

  7. Rebecca Bailey says:

@Anya, thanks for mentioning that – I hadn’t noticed (I haven’t tried any of the summer passion shades). I generally try to avoid products rich in vitamin A for daytime wear because of the photosensitizing effect.

  8. Clean, vegan lipstick? Whoo hoo! It’s all out of my price range right now, but I’m glad they exist and hope they get plenty of press. Thanks, Rebecca!

These look great! I’ll get on this soon as I need a new lipstick. I’ve recently ODed on lush and ilia lipstick – I have way too many of each.

@Danielle Hey! I’m here. I have been snowed under with day job stuff, but I’m baaaaack!

  11. Ashley says:

Love red apple lipstick! My most used products are the eyeshadow in porcelain, the rallye balm, and the lipstick in Red!

I LOVE RAL. I found and they converted me to a lipstick girl! They have wonderful shades from their Spring of ’61 Collection too! One of the best things about this company (besides being vegan), is how you can put one layer of lipstick on for a sheer color, build it up with more layers, or create your own shade by layering different lipsticks together. I must say their customer service rocks!!

  13. Wendy says:

AHHHHH I love RAL!!! I read somewhere that RAL was used on a gluten free cast member of Drop Dead Diva, do you know which one?? I can’t seem to find the link again but I love the makeup looks in the show.
