How to Finger-Paint Your Face With Natural Makeup
This is so awesome! The amazing makeup artist Katey Denno, who we’ve yet to meet but would love to (hi, Katey!) has done a video demonstrating the perfect summer face using all our favorites: Vapour Organics, RMS Beauty, Tata Harper, Kjaer Weis and Ilia.
I, for one, am in love with the finished look.
Do you guys use brushes, or your fingers, to apply your makeup? And what do you think of the finished product?
Video via

Brushes, although I certainly don’t think it is the only way to do things. I’m not crazy about the finished product. For summer, it is a bit too shiny. I would be concerned that the shine would deepen or, even worse, the makeup would start melting, especially the eye area. I also think she chose the exact wrong color for this model’s lips. Beautiful model though.
I use brushes to apply my foundation. I use my fingers to apply lip tints and glosses as well as eyeshadow.
I love the initial look and the look with the Ilia Illuminator. The model looked so fresh and beautiful! As for the final look…. It’s not my cup of tea. I wasn’t feeling the smoky eye and lipstick. The lipstick was’t even applied well…The MUA missed the corners of the models mouth.
I find this nice and especially quick, when you don’t have time. Sometimes I also love to apply make-up on myself with fingers. But in general I prefer to use brushes, because of my obsession with them:)
Btw. I also did a lovely make-up tutorial where I designed 3 quick make-up looks all with natural products :)

Thanks for sharing this video!
I loved the look created, i think the color combo was great (eyes / lips / cheeks ) and suited the girl…i especially liked the mix of RMS Karma and Seduce eyeshadow, and also Ilia illuminator/bronzer.
I usually apply concelear / foundation with my fingers, blush with a brush and cream eyeshadow with my fingers.
Lip stick from the tube or with fingers, as well.
Brush for foundation/concealer because I can’t get the precision I want with fingers. Fingers for eyes. Brush for lipstick. I have pale lips and again the brush gives me more precision. The look is slightly more sheer which is better on me and I can get right to the edges and corners without messing up.
I guess that I too prefer a more natural look but I will also admit that the colour on my monitor is often a little funky. Maybe that ’s why the colours looked off. There are a few things that show up weird on my monitor and pinks often look a little orange and shadows look too dark so I am going to assume that its my monitor. Other wise the make up was nice.
i always tried using brushes with makeup like this, but it never worked right for me. I’ve been wanting someone to teach me how to use my fingers for this… thanks!
i love the final look! I love how fresh it is – just perfect for summer, especially for tan skin. i also love that now i know how to layer the rms color on both the lip and the eye, and how to build it for more depth and color.
what a nice surprise to see this on your site today! thanks for the love, siobhan! we gotta make a date to meet.
the range of products on the green market makes finding the perfect shade, texture, and intensity of color a world easier than it was even just five years ago. If you’re not a fan of the dewy face, or the lip color I built up in the video, the wonderful news is: you have options to tweak the look and make it perfectly suited for your taste and skin type, and not compromise on the integrity of the ingredients.
I’m so grateful for all the brands who make this possible!
I adore this fresh and natural dewy look! It’s so perfect for summer and on beautifully moisturized skin. I especially love the look of the illuminated eye and pink cheek. Using your fingers with these products seems like the most natural way to get the desired organic look I really love. Feels so fresh! Can’t wait to try these products and these techniques!
As a producer of fashion shoots, I’m lucky enough to work with a ton of talented makeup artists. I try to learn as many tips as possible from them and I’ve been surprised that most prefer using fingers. They say that the warmth from the skin allows for better blending.
With “toxic” makeup products, it’s always felt more natural for me to use brushes, however as I’m getting more familiar with green products the finger application seems to work best. This is a great makeup tutorial. I especially appreciate the green product recommendations. In the past, I’ve had a hard time finding non-toxic makeup that produces a good color. The products featured here are great. I’ve come across some of them in my work and have used them myself. They look great, apply well, and come in fun colors.
I love the final look here! I see the “dewy” look everywhere on fashion sets. She was right on with that tip. I also loved the tips about adding dimension. I’d be curious to hear more about how to do that with lighter-toned skin.
I am all about the fingers! I feel I can get much better blending without brushes, and I can use my fingers to actually feel for the bone structure, rather than guess at it. This tutorial is awesome.

I use my favorite brushes for my mineral foundation and finishing powder. The rest is brushes or fingers depending on the product. I learned to use fingers after buying RMS and I really like it.
The final look in the video is pretty, but too much for my taste. I’m unlikely to wear that much eye makeup, blush and lip color all at once – but it’s nice to get an idea of what can be done. Then you can do whichever parts you like.
I have to say I LOVE Vapour, their products are amazing. I adore their primer, no fillers or silicones like toxic primers. It goes you a great glow and base for your makeup. I apply everything from foundation to blush with my fingers, quick and easy! The only thing I use a brush for would be powders.
As for the video look, I agree with most of the comments it was pretty but not my taste, the eye was a bit too dark and the lips a bit too bright but the model still looked for pretty!.

I love the dewey summertime look, and what a beautiful model! Great job Katey. Honored that you picked our Rebuilding Moisturizer to start off the process. I want that lipstick shade! :)
Natural look = beautiful look. My friend Katey Denno has struck glamorous glittering gold with this application.
One the most talented artists I know, Katey has created a perky, glowing complexion without poisoning and compromising the skin. As an esthetician, for me, skin comes first. Katey is paving the road on a new makeup highway to amazing skin with eco friendly results!!! Keep up the fantastic work!!!!P
Fingers, no doubt. I do have some good quality brushes, and I use them very occasionally, if I’m in the mood, or if I’m doing a very All The Way face with a matte finish, but mostly I use fingers for everything. I’ve found over the years that I prefer very highly pigmented cosmetics, but with very minimal/soft/sheer application, and for me, fingers are the way to do that. Weirdly, I’ve had people stop and watch me in the washroom, because they’re confused or intrigued that I’m basically putting on eyeliner with my pinkie finger. Maybe I should do a video…
The major exceptions: 1) Liquid eyeliner for extra-fancy nights. 2) Though I no longer use Guerlain’s powders, I have a beautiful powder brush from them that I keep out all the time and use whenever I decide to do powder. Don’t know exactly why, but it’s the best brush I’ve ever had. It feels perfect and I’ve had it for years.
GREAT VIDEO. Since I also tend to “finger paint my face” I was especially excited to see this video and watch the expert technique in applying and blending the different colors so skillfully. A big help and a great look. Thanks for posting!
please make it so that video does not automatically play
I tend to use brushes with my ‘un-clean’ products…. and fingers with my clean products such as rms etc. I think it has a lot to do with needing the warmth of fingers.
I loved the video – would love to see more. Pls!!
I tend to use my fingers to apply makeup other than powder all over my face but I have to admit I don’t wear much makeup. Not using brushes makes the process quicker and I hate the idea of having lots of “tools.” However, I personally didn’t like the makeup look in this video…waaay too many products and the model was so much prettier before any of it hit her face! She could have maybe just used a touch of concealer under her eyes and a little bit of lip color. I’m all about simplicity.
Is there any way to disable this video from automatically playing every time we come to the site? I actually read NMDL at work and I work on the phone’s it is jarring when the music comes on especially as I wear a headset!
Ugh… sorry but I hate finger painting and cream products, particularly eyeshadows. I tried the RMS shadows and 30 minutes later everything had migrated under my eye… I looked like a witch! And I was at a Xmas party…. needless to say never again.
I use my fingers for everything. Not crazy about the particular color combination.
I second Moni’s comment about disabling the video. Video eats up lots of band width and makes my already staggering long distance/ internet bill ($180 this month) even heftier. Things like internet and electricity are really expensive up here and having that video load every time I visit this sight in going to cost me about five dollars at this point.
Hey guys, the video auto-playing was a mistake. For those of you who haven’t seen it, click through the link if you want to watch the video.
Yay! Thanks so much @Siobhan! Also, thanks for the backup @Beth- I was hoping I wasn’t alone in this!
Thank you, now I can stop speed reading linger again over this wonderful site again.
