Product Review: Jane Iredale’s White Eyeliner
Have any of you tried white eyeliner? It’s my new fave for spring right now.
It wasn’t long ago that I was searching for something new to do with my look. Confession: I did get the highlights, and some of you also encouraged me to try white eyeliner—and I love it!
My fear was that this would look weird, basically. And it does a little. But good weird. Like a little surprise, but a pleasant one. I’ve been really into white shoes as well, so I feel like these pops of white could be part of my current uniform. The older I get the more drawn I am to the idea of a uniform, anyone with me?
But back to the liner. Jane Iredale is my go-to when it comes to natural liners, so I was very excited to try their white. It did not disappoint. What brand of liner do you wear?
I’ve tried it a few ways:
1. Inside liner. I don’t know that lining the inside of one’s eye is ever really the best idea, natural or not, but I still do it on occasion. This is a fun daytime look, as opposed to the inside black line which always screams night out. In this pic it’s done a bit more extreme than I do it, but a lighter touch is almost imperceptible while still looking fresh.
2. Cat eye line. This is a fun, modern take on this back-in-vogue style. Again, what I really like about going white here is that it’s great for day (though nice at night too, because the white really jumps when it catches the light). I wear mascara when I do this, otherwise it can get a little washed out.
3. Lid shadow. This one is probably the easiest to pull off. I’ve tried just using the liner on my lid and then smudging it a bit so that it’s a matte, blended white. But I’ve also mixed it with RMS luminizer which looks more like this pic. Highly recommend!
What new makeup tricks have you been trying? And is white liner in your repertoire?

hmm, not sure I can pull off the white ;-) I just about used up my Jane Iredale basic brown/black liner. It always seemed to smear off by the end of the day so I’ve been experimenting w/ mineral liners & shadows (Alima samples.. love!). Still trying the right techniques to get things looking pretty and staying put. Any tips, I’d love to hear.
Also just got ZuZu liner in Leaf, a darkish green color. It’s pretty but doesn’t fully fill the void of a dirty Sephora one I was using.
How come I never tried a white eyeliner, LOL
I have seen many celebrities wearing it on the lower lid of their eyes and in the corners, it really makes their eye look more prettier.
Love white liner! It can really make your eyes look a lot more open when you’re tired. A more subtle thing is to use a light, skintone liner in your lower waterline instead (like Lisa Eldridge’s Breakfast at TIffany’s tutorial). If you then add mascara to your bottom lashes, your eyes look huge!
@Alexandra- I actually wanted to ask you guys if you couldn’t do a post on black/brown liners. I haven’t found a good natural one- Burt’s Bees is ok (although maybe Jane Iredale is one to try!). I also was wondering about the eye kohls, which are more like crayons than the pencil liner. Are there any organic ones?
Thanks for this post!
I just bought this! It was my first foray into natural eyeliner. So far so good. Not quite as soft as the kohl from Lancome, but I think it lasts a bit better. I like to use white eyeliner in the summer (it makes me feel tan) and in the winter for that icy look.
Instead of lining your entire eye with white, you can use white on the inside, toward your nose, 1/3-1/2 of your eye, depending on the shape of your eye, then a darker black/brown or whatever color you look best in for the outside of your eyes. Top and bottom. Makes your eyes look a bit more wide set and tones down the black ring look. I hope the directions made sense…
Just looked at the pics again, the white/inside black/outside look is sorta what is going on in the Scarlett Johansson pic.
I love the liquid liners, I find they don’t run as much and make a much better job of the cat eyes. That’s my fav.
I am also a huge fan of gold, yes gold, I have brown eyes and always find a safe go to day or night…

No white liner for me, but I use lots of luminizer around my eyes (and on lashes). Sometimes I apply the luminizer with a tiny brush so the effect is similar but more subtle than white liner.
Regarding liner in general, as much as I love RMS shadows as liners, I like a pencil for ease. I’ve been trying Inika and Lily Lolo (both from http://www.saffronrouge.com) in grey and like them both so far. I also really love the brown/bronze by Afterglow.
It’s nice to see a review on Jane Iredale. I use a lot of her products and I’m really happy with her stuff. I use the brown/black liner to fill in my sparse eyebrows. My only complaint is when I try to sharpen the pencil, it keeps breaking. Any suggestions?
I’ve always been a fan of a little white liner to brighten the eyes when I’m feeling a little tired, but really I haven’t used it since I went clean and instead found the RMS luminizer to have a similar effect. I’ll have to check this out for sure though! Big fan of J.I.
I’m right there with ya Silvy, would love suggestions of really great natural eyeliners (preferably pencils)! And the kohls too! Was just recently looking into this! Recommendations anyone?

I’m at my wits end as far as natural liner. I’ll try anything, if it would just stay put. I don’t mind reapplying in the evening before going out, but every single one of the natural liners I’ve tried lasts about 30 minutes before smearing, disappearing, or just dusting off over the rest of my face! I try to be zen about it, but GAAAAAHHHHHH!
I have pretty normal skin and my old dirty Aqua Eyes liner from Make Up Forever stayed on great. I’m tired of shelling out money for all these non-returnable items! I’d try liquid or a powder, too, but a pencil or some sort of natural gel would be nice. I like a little definition and light smudging.
Help me, clean girls!
Just received my opensky email telling me that NMDL are new curators! Congrats ladies!
@Emily, I use Dr. Haushcka pencil eyeliner. Actually, very apropos, I use the duo one with one side plum and the other white liner, which I love. It stays put for me – it’s not very hard so it doesn’t look too harsh but it isn’t creamy so it doesnt smudge (at least on me). I use physician’s formula gel eyeliner for more dramatic eyes. I know it isn’t clean but I’ll buy a better one when I’m out of this one… which will be a while because it lasts forever.
One trick to make pencil liner last longer is to put powder eye shadow in the same colour over it. You need to use a small angle brush to apply properly. Makeup artists use this trick to add staying power and I’ve found it works well.
I find white a bit too stark for me. I’d love to find a good beige/skintoned pencil though :)
I’m really glad that you did a post on Jane Iredale. I love white eyeliners, I usually use it in the inner ducts of my eyes to make them pop, but it does look a bit unnatural on darker skinned ladies. Could you girls possibly do a review on Jane Iredale’s Liquid Minerals Foundation? I’m thinking of getting it but from the reviews on Makeupalley, I’m finding it hard to decide. Thank you.
Can anyone recommend a great eye pencil sharpener? Are they all created equal?
I’ve never thought to try white liner–I’ve always thought it was no-go, but now I’m re-thinking that!
@lms – put your eyeliner pencil in the freezer for 5-10 minutes before sharpening! it hardens it a bit so it won’t break.
@emily – I’ve been using a zuzu liner that I got at pharmaca and so far so good. Unless I workout with it on it doesn’t smudge like most natural liners (and even then the smearing is minor). I also love honeybee gardens eyeliners, but they can definitely get a little smeary toward the end of the day when I apply on my lower lash line; I mostly like using that one for a smudgy/smoky look on my upper lid.
thanks for the tip amy!
@ Katy, Urban Decay makes a good sharpener :)
The Afterglow pencil liners I mentioned above don’t need a sharpener, they are twist-up. And the Inika liners come with a little sharpener attached to the cap (so far I like the Inika and the Lily Lolo about the same but that convenient sharpener might push Inika over the top). 100% Pure also makes some pencil liners, but I don’t have as much experience with those.
@Cara—I’ve been using Jane Iredale liquid minerals foundation for a couple of years now and I love it. It provides light coverage and goes on smooth. It does not make me break out and helps cover up some sun damage I have.
I would love to hear more of her products reviewed though. I feel like they were recommended in the book but not so much anymore in the blog? Her stuff rates well in the Skin Deep website.
Boy is that awful. I hope that this is a trend that will die brisky and swiftly. Thanks, but no thanks.
Dr. Hauschka’s liquid eyeliner works well for me. Once it dries, which doesn’t take long, it stays on all day with little fading and does not smear. I have tried others but come back to this because it lasts the longest and doesn’t make a mess.
greetings
Nice thread. I love Jane Iredale products. I have olive skin with beige/neutral undertones (Latte in powder foundation)…and I found their nude eyeshadow palette good…for a natural look I just use the brown eyeshadow as a liner in the palette. I have tried Jane Iredale’s black/brown eyeliner and it looks really pretty! I haven’t purchased it yet as I’m not a real fan of eyeliner pencils…I prefer using a thin brush to apply using eyeshadows.
I have a couple of Inika eyeliners though, black and blue. It has organic ingredients. The blue from Inika is a nice vivid sapphire. I don’t wear it daily, just when I really want to pop my eyes.
I recently found a great company based in France, Studio 78. I live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and the closest I have found is a store based in Toronto, Canada that carries it – http://www.art27.ca. They have beautiful shadows that I use as an eyeliner, and it is organic. They use a baked formulation, and the result is beautiful and there is an ease and silkiness in application that I haven’t experienced before. Beautiful light sapphire blue, green/bronze colour, coffee. Silky, soft-textured shadows…and it feels like high quality elegance and love has been put in the products. Definitely feel luxurious with this line. I like Jane Iredale – silky shadows as well but it isn’t organic unfortunately.
In terms of organic mineral shadows that can be used as eyeliners you can also try http://www.cheekycosmetics.ca . I have tried many, although must admit that the powder form isn’t as easy to apply as the baked or compact form, so I tend not to use this as much. As a side note, Cheeky cosmetics makes an amazing lip gloss – non sticky, feels good.
