Product Review: Acure Organics Shampoo and Conditioner [REPOST!!]

As some of you know, every Wednesday we feature new favorite products on Open Sky. Today we’ve added a shampoo and conditioner set from Acure Organics. Siobhan reviewed this line back in November, so we thought we’d repost. Have you tried it?

I’m going to do a Q&A with myself about this new shampoo and conditioner from Acure Organics, because that seems, in this moment, to be a funny and easy break from form, since I’ve reviewed a bunch of shampoos and conditioners lately. Also, easy to read for you guys, right? Heh.

Does the shampoo get your hair clean?

LOL! What? Yes! Obviously.

Is there residue left over?

No, actually. The shampoo has a nice lather—hard to get in naturals—and rinses out pretty easily. Ditto the conditioner, which I typically leave on my hair for a couple of minutes as I shave my legs or sing or something.

Does it smell nice?

I’ve only smelled the argan oil shampoo and conditioner—there are three different kinds, with three different smells and oils, by hair type—and I love the smell so much! Spirit Demerson sent me the duo to sample to try and review (she sells them on her site), and I BBMed her after I first tried it freaking out about how nice is smells. Like almonds, kind of, with a citrusy smell that cuts the sweetness of the almond extract. I love how the smell lingers on my hair too. It makes me feel good about hugging people. (Does everyone think about how their hair smells during hugs?)

Does the conditioner weight down your hair?

Only if it’s opposite day. Which is to say, no, not at all. My hair has a nice bounce to it, no residue (see above) and it’s SHINY, probably thanks to all the oils in there.

Do you like it enough to use it—and only it—every day?

Yes.

Which means it’s probably prohibitively expensive right? Like all the other stuff you like?

Hey! That’s not true! OK, it’s sometimes true, but no, this one’s totally affordable! 12 oz. for $10.99.

I’m new to Acure. Do you like the rest of the line?

We’re new to it too! I haven’t tried anything else from them, but their price points are amazing, and the ingredients are clean, so I’m thinking this might be the beginning of a love affair.

Finally, is it…clean?

I’ve been meaning to try that shampoo/conditioner set, because I already use a bunch of stuff from them. Their toning mist is great and I love their argon oil for my face. I also have their body lotion with argon oil (mild obsession). And none if it is too expensive, just a teeny bit more than what you’d pay at the grocery store probably.

  2. Cameron says:

I plan to try the shampoo, because I’ve been so pleased with the other products I’ve tried — face wash (for dry skin), the sea kelp facial scrub and the radical age reversal cream. I’ve even bought several products for oily skin for my husband (face wash, moisturizer and toner) and they are also great. So…very pleased with the line and the pricing is great!

  3. Lynne says:

I’ve been using Acure Body Lotion (Cocoa Butter & CoQ10…unscented) for months and I love it. Gave up Curel which had been my go-to forever to go organic. Its a great everyday body lotion and costs $10…more than Curel of course…but acceptable for organic. And they have it at my Whole Foods!

  4. Miriam says:

I just started using the Acure volumizing shampoo (mint and echinacea) and argan oil conditioner for a couple of weeks ago and love it! The price is fantastic and the shampoo gently clenses while the conditioner leaves hair feeling nourished, soft, and shiny! I only have to wash every two to three days, which I love as well, and can go longer if I use dry shampoo in between. I also use the Acure argan oil on my face because they sell it at my local organic grocery store and I love that too! Great line that I’m excited to try more of!!

  5. mbelle says:

I just found the body lotion at Whole Foods, I didn’t realize they had a whole line. Yay. I love the body lotion, it’s thick but not too thick, and smells delicious. There were a couple different scents, including an unscented one. I will definitely be trying the shampoo and conditioner next.

  6. Naomi says:

Oh excellent, I’m in the market for new shampoo and conditioner and have been looking at this line. (Actually I’ve been looking at a lot of products in this line, it’s a good price point.) One thing I would ask – does anyone have any recommendations for a problematic scalp? I have short, fine hair so I can’t weigh it down with anything too heavy but it tends toward dryness / static so I lean toward products that are geared for dryness. I occasionally get dandruff (which seems to be stress related and I’m in the midst of an episode right now) but also have recently developed a patch of psoriasis on my scalp, which is entirely new to me. (Gosh, I sound gorgeous, don’t I?!?) Any suggestions would be very gratefully received!

  7. Tricia says:

I’ve used a handful of their products; easy to procure at WF and relatively cheap in comparison to a lot of the other products I’ve tried/used. The face cleanser for dry skin rocks. I wouldn’t say my skin is dry, it’s….um….’mature’ and just can’t handle gel cleansers any longer. That said, this cleanser takes all the grime off without making my face all puckered up nor does it leave it feeling ‘unclean’. And it smells good (I’m all about the smell). Currently using the calming body lotion (lavender and lotus); someone at work said my tea smelled good. Ha. Looking forward to trying out their argan oil (love Kahina but the cost just about kills me) and their argan body lotion as well. Will definitely be trying their shampoo and conditioner as well.

  8. comagirl says:

I’ve not used this line, but am excited to try it. I had tried Aubrey conditioner and it is very strange: in consistency, doesn’t rinse out and smells of cod liver oil. Talk about feeling self-conscious when being hugged. Ew! And the price point for this conditioner was $19.99, not exactly in the moderate range. So far, even through trial and error, I’ve not found a clean shampoo/conditioner that works for me. I hope this one does; it sounds promising.

  9. a says:

I LOVE the Argan Shampoo and Conditioner. Love. The conditioner moisturizes my medium-thick, curly hair without weighing it down. The shampoo cleans without stripping. I find it’s best if I use a deep conditioner on a weekly basis (usually just some argan I leave it). I use argan oil as a styling aid, so I just put more in for extra conditioning when I’m going to be tying my hair back. Also, I found the argan I use for my hair at Mountain Rose Herbs – it’s not as high quality as Kahina or Amal (different processing), but I’m not really concerned about that for my hair…my face still gets Kahina or Amal Oils Argan Oil.

  10. Brinklen says:

Just an FYI, on http://www.retailmenot.com, there is a coupon code for Acure Organics to save 15% off their products. With the coupon, a regularly $10.99 12 oz. bottle of shampoo or conditioner is $9.34. Also, they have free shipping! I’m ordering after sending the good news along to others here!

  11. YES. Acure products are amazing. I’ve used their Seriously Firming Serum and the Radical Age Reversal Cream too. Both worked great; the only thing I didn’t like is that the bottles are quite small for the price. Haven’t tried the hair care line, and now I’m stoked to give it a shot!

  12. Dawn says:

I’ve tried two Acure Organics products: their Facial Cleansing Creme and their Mandarin Orange + Mango Body Lotion. The body lotion was just about perfect, but the cleansing creme dried my skin out a little too much for my liking (soap-free cleansers and cleansing oils work best for me).

I definitely plan on trying their shampoo and conditioner ASAP!

  13. tania barnes says:

I love, love love Acure Organics Facial Cleanser Superfruit plus Chlorella Growth Factor. I always use cleanser to double as eye make up remover so I need to be able to smear it over my eyes. No sting, removes everything, smells great, doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight (i have normal/ combination but i’m in my early 30s and it’s starting to dry out a bit so some cleanser cans over-wash).

  14. melissa says:

The facial scrub is AMAZING. I’m a little obsessed. Seriously – go out & get it right now. (AND the designer in me loves their packaging. I’m a sucker for good packaging.) Now my obsession continues – my hair is in desperate need of something new anyway! :)

  15. Renee says:

How does it compare to John Masters Avocado and lavendar conditioner? Thats what I use and its really the only thing Ive used that does amazing things for my hair. Takes a lot less tugging to get the knots out of my hair.

  16. christina says:

I just got some of this last week & i am LOVING it!!! Its scent it right up my alley. My crunchy hair is not as crunchy as it usually is.

  17. Rebecca says:

I recently ordered a shampoo/conditioner set from SBL. I’m looking forward to trying it out.

  18. mbelle says:

Thanks to Brinklen for the tip! I just ordered some goodies online and got 15% off, and free shipping. Woot! Sharing the love.

  19. Heather says:

I’ve used a variety of their body lotions, and love all of them. I get them from soaphope.com: they’re discounted there, and it supports good causes to boot.

  20. Alex says:

Glad to hear good things about Acure’s shampoo and conditioner- I’m a big fan of John Masters, but it’s a bit pricey, so it will be fun to try something new. I’ve tried the Acure Orange/Mango body lotion (which is probably the most amazing thing I’ve ever smelled without then eating it), and the facial scrub, which is AMAZING. (My face has literally never felt so soft). And, they plant one tree for every bottle of body lotion they sell, and do other things with other products, I think, like donate $1. Plus, it’s free trade. I’m loving everything about this company!

  21. Leslie says:

I am totally in love with the a cure olive and mint facial cleansing cream…heaven! So excited to see theynare doing shampoo

  22. Alexa says:

I’ve been meaning to try the Acure hair products for a while, and I keep seeing all these great reviews for them. I love many if their face products, especially the scrub. It’s amazing!! So is their face wash for combo skin, it takes off all my makeup, and doesn’t dry out my skin. Maybe I will have to give in and order the shampoo and conditioner.

  23. Michelle says:

What excellent timing, I really wanted to try this out!! Excited that it lathers pretty well, I know naturals normally don’t and that’s still hard for me to accept and adjust to!

@melissa, I’m with you on the packaging! I want to love based on that as well!

  24. Alyssa M says:

@Naomi, I’m in the same boat! I have had psoriasis on my scalp for ages and my hair is super dry so I need something super moisturizing for my hair that won’t irritate my scalp. I recently read that certain replacement surfectants (in addition to the evil SLS obviously) can really irritate psoriasis. Cocamidopropyl is a common replacement in shampoos and apparently it often triggers irritation, so I have been looking for shampoos that avoid this and other replacement SLS type chemicals. The Acure shampoo looks pretty good, but I’ve been considering trying something really simple, like natural baby shampoo.

  25. Liz says:

I’ve been using Acure’s Mint + Echinacea Shampoo and I love it! It lathers nicely and gives my hair enough volume. Haven’t tried the Conditioner yet, I’m too attached to my John Master’s Citrus + Neroli. I also love their body lotions and facial scrub!

  26. Rose says:

What I loved was that you had a conversation with yourself in this post. I especially liked the ‘Hey, I’m new to this line,’ and then ‘Us too!’ Ha! Thanks for the much-appreciated chuckle, Siobhan.

  27. Charlotte says:

Naomi: a vinegar rinse is supposed to help tremendously with dandruff. White or apple cider vinegar will both work fine. Dilute it with water at about a 1:3 ratio (more water than vinegar). And rinse with it in the shower. It also doubles as an amazing detangler! Good luck!

  28. Siobhan says:

    @Renee I prefer it!

@Rose I am glad you were as entertained reading as I was writing. Never know how these things will go.

  29. Renee says:

I may give it a try then when I run out the stuff I have then. I will say though Ive had some pretty awful luck with conditioners. Tried a sample of Rahua and wow lol it made my hair supper dry! I love John Masters but I def wouldnt mind a cheaper alternative!

  30. Steffie says:

Interviewing yourself… one more crazy bit of awesome I love it!

Even though the products from Acure are small sized (most are actually within regs for flight), I actually really like that about them. I’m more conscious about how much I use, and their creams are so spreadably soft that you really only need a very little anyway. The bottles I’ve had since summer are still with me, and the only thing I’m to the halfway mark on are the toning mist because it soothes my legs after shaving, and the argan oil because it goes on face, tips and toes, and feet in a regular rotation, with an occasional belly rub thrown in – so far, no stretch marks! Heavier usages with GREAT results.

Their donation policy just kind of warms my heart in a way that eye cream never has and that’s big.

  31. Geri says:

Acure products are AMAZING!! Especially the olive and mint cleansing cream. Love it -better than any cleanser ever and I’ve tried tons. I use a lot of makeup and it takes it all off and leaves my skin looking and feeling amazing. Can’t wait to try the hair products and hope they just keep on making new products.

  32. Janelle says:

LOVE this stuff! Just bought a set of the peppermint one, for thin/limp hair. I found that it lathers really well compared to other naturals (it actually made me read the ingredients twice to make sure something wasn’t hidden in there)! I can’t really agree that the smell of the shampoo lingers in your hair, but I’ll give it a few more chances before I make up my mind on that. Overall, great product in my books.

  33. Tiffany says:

I have a few questions for you guys. I have a dry scalp and now I use a dandruff shampoo but I would like to switch to a cleaner shampoo. Do you know of any brands that make a dandruff shampoo that is natural yet effective?

  34. I bought the mint shampoo & conditioner. I have very fine, wavy hair. It tends to either be really limp, greasy and thin to the point that I look like I’m balding, OR it’s dry and frizzy and a big fat birds nest. Most products are either too heavy/moisturizing or too drying. I have sensitive skin and scalp, and for the last month or so (prior to my purchase) my scalp was very red and itchy. I was at a point of cutting off my long locks, figuring I will have to resign myself to a shorter cut. But then I decided to try Acure.

MY SCALP: Not red. Not itchy. And in only 2 washes! That’s really impressive.
    FRIZ: Gone!
LIMP: Well… ok, it’s a little on the limp side. But impressively it isn’t the greasy mess my hair has been with other brands. I don’t think I can get away with washing my hair the night before (my usual habit), and expect my hair to look fresh all day. But I do think that if I shower in the morning, I have a good chance of normal looking hair through the day. It’s the best I’ve found so far, I am especially impressed with how well my scalp is looking so quickly. And I know I’ve only used it twice, I need to give it a full 2 weeks to really get a better idea, but I am a little disappointed that my hair is getting a touch too much moisture :/

  35. janelle says:

I have tried Acure facial and hair line. I love the ingredients and packaging. Love the volumizing hair care lune and prefer the clenching gel over the cream! This was my first product choice after deciding to switch to organic!

If u shop at beauty.com they carry the whole line and have the best prices …if u use the code beauty20 you get 20% off…..this is the best deal I’ve found. Plus free shipping over 25.00 and a much bettereturn policy then thecut

  36. kim says:

I love the body lotion, it’s thick but not too thick, and smells delicious. There were a couple different scents, including an unscented one. I will definitely be trying the shampoo and conditioner next.

  37. michele says:

I love Acure! I just received the argan oil shampoo + conditioner – so far, so good. The smell reminds me of homemade biscotti. My boyfriend thought I was crazy, because I kept telling him to smell how amazing it was, haha!

I recently reviewed a plethora of their products. Here is the link:

    http://www.shortgirllongisland.com/2012/04/acure-organics-review.html

Their argan oil is one of my favorites. I need to get my hands on the marula oil + test that out, too!

  38. Amanda says:

I honestly clicked on this post because I am in love with Acure’s lotion. I didn’t know they made Shampoo and Conditioner so now I needs must find some! Thanks for the review!

  39. Annie says:

SO glad this came up! I LOVE Acure Shampoo and conditioners. I have tried all of them now, the Lemongrass is my favorite, Argan second, and Mint third. That is rating by smell becuase all of them work fantastic. The Argan may be a little bit heavier now that I think about it, in a good way, as I really liked it this past winter.

I am 34 with fine hair. Honestly I cannot believe my luck in finding this line as they are 10.99 a bottle at SBL, good for the budget-minded and less than HALF what I have been paying for other brands my entire adult life (I’m 33). I have read really good reviews about their other products and as I run out of facewash etc will definetly try. Thank you Acure! P.S> I have also put my teenage daughter (13 years old) onto the shampoo and conditioner, she has super thick blonde hair and also loves them.

  40. jamie says:

I use their Argan Oil and I like it – it is the first Argan Oil I’ve tried, so I don’t have anything to compare it to, so…..but it is good? I use it on my face, cuticles and hair when I straighten it and I think it is doing what it is supposed to be doing – moisturizing, de-frizzing, etc (small shout out to the oil cleansing method, i’m 2 months in and love it – thanks to this site/book for the tips & ideas).

  41. Mia says:

    Finally, is it…clean?

  42. Kat says:

    @Mia

Ummm…. Just because something has a scientific sounding name doesn’t mean it’s bad for you. Why don’t you try googling those things you have in bold before you sound all shocked?

  43. Jackie says:

Acure shampoo was the first clean product that I consciously purchased after recently reading NMDL, thank you Siobhan and Alexandra, this book has changed my life! Okay, on to the review, I have extremely fine/thin hair and I’ve always left chunks of hair in the drain. Since I’ve been using the Mint + Echinacea, I haven’t been clogging up the shower drain anymore. My hair doesn’t seem as dandruffy now and the shampoo has a really nice lather. I also use their argan oil on my face at night and have noticed way less whiteheads around my nose. I also have a weird dry patch of skin under my nose, even though the rest of my skin is combo/sensitive/rosacea. I don’t have that terrible dryness anymore, and my skin looks much better, and even foundation goes on nicer and doesn’t cake (Vapour Soft Focus). Acure is a great and affordable brand, can’t wait to try the argan shampoo.

  44. jacqui says:

    Don’t forget the Detangler!!
For curly , kinky hair, it gives great slip. no more little girls crying! The fragrance is great, not overdone. And I can feel comfortable about the ingredients. I love Acure’s leave in conditioner and detangler.

  45. Lisa says:

I have the Acure’s Mint + Echinacea Shampoo and Conditioner, supposed to be volumizing…and I think they are (for me, anyway)! They smell just as wonderful as the almond-y ones, but milder. If you shop around, you can find them for less than the 10.99 retail. http://www.iherb.com/m/sr?kw=acure+organics+hair&btnSrch= has them for 9.49 each; orders over $20 ship free. If you’ve never shopped at iherb, you can use code YAN534 to get $5 off! They also carry lots of clean beauty brands, like Honeybee Gardens, Larenim, Real Purity, etc.

  46. Demi L says:

I have been trying to make the switch to natural products, and I finally do not have to sacrifice health for style with the Shielo Volume Shampoo! I have fine hair and am an everyday washer (I have to be…); this shampoo leaves my hair healthy and full. I would recommend always using the Shielo Volume Conditioner as well, at least on the ends. Great product and the best natural shampoo I’ve found yet.

  47. Jimmy says:

This is actually a pretty awesome bunch of products. For some reason, regular shampoo and stuff makes my hair all sticky.

  48. Hari Ohm says:

i actually use shielo’s hydrate line of shampoos (which are sulfate free) to wash my hair. It doesnt have any of those harmful ingredients. I used to have the worst hair, and now I ALWAYS get complements when using the shielo shampoo. Worth the price. . .

  49. nancy says:

I have used Soft & Shiny Organic Conditioning Shamppo line foe decades and need no hair conditioner at all. It leaves the hair shiny and soft and does not strip the natural oils so I have no fly aways. They make now a Soft & Shiny Haiy Moisturizing cream which is just amazing,
