Catherine’s Morning Hair and Skin Routine…Exposed!
Happy Friday everyone! Meet Catherine, who is a great example of someone who truly uses sunscreen like they should! More power to her. She spends her days working, chasing around her bulldog (awesome!), and training for a 1/2 marathon (double awesome!), and she keeps the sun off all the while. Read on!
Name: Catherine
Age: 37
Current Weather: I live in Chicago and it has been all over the place this Spring, currently in the upper 30s and sunny!
Hair: I have long, straight, dark brown hair. It’s very fine and gets very oily.
Skin: I have residual oiliness from my teens and twenties, but I’d say it’s combination now. I’m fair, I have good skin tone and few wrinkles from being extremely diligent about sunscreen use. If SPF 1,000 existed I would use it!
Favorite Star: Ursula Andress
In the shower…
OK, I’m going a bit backwards here because I usually shower at night. I work from home and spend a lot of time outside, so in the morning I rinse my face with water and spray on Evan Healy’s Lavender Facial Tonic Hydrosol followed by Josie Maran’s Argan Daily Moisturizer with spf 40. I let that sink in and then I apply Elemental Herbs Zinc Sunstick spf 30, concentrating at the hairline and nose. I have a 60-lb american bulldog who needs lots of exercise, plus I am training for a half marathon, so I sweat A LOT. I need lots of protection in the blazing sun! When I shower at the end of the day, I exfoliate with Suki Lemongrass Exfoliating Cleanser. I wash and condition with Acure Organics Pure Mint and Echinacea Stem Cell Shampoo and Conditioner, and I wash the sweat off with EO Coconut Vanilla shower gel.
Outside the shower…
If I don’t shampoo my hair in the shower (I shampoo every other day), I use Lush No Drought Dry Shampoo if I have to go somewhere and don’t want to be seen with oily roots! If I’m going to bed, I use Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid toner, followed by Jurlique Herbal Recovery Gel. For my eyes I use MyChelle Fabulous Eye Cream. I moisturize my body with Acure Mandarin Orange and Mango body lotion.
Finishing touches…
I only wear makeup if I’m going out at night. Usually it’s 100% Pure Tinted Moisturizer, Josie Maran Argan Color Stick in Rosy, 100% Pure Mascara in Black Tea, Korres Eyeliner in Brown, and Afterglow Hydra Gloss Lip Gloss in Aerial. I carry Boscia blotting tissues in Lavender (these smell amazing!) for touch-ups.
So…Sunscreen queen! Is anyone else training for a race or otherwise spending a lot of time outside and have an active sunscreen that’s been working well?

Elemental Herbs is my favorite sunscreen – it’s not heavy or oily and doesn’t come of when I sweat! I mostly use their Sport version for all over, but I keep the stick around for my hands and places it is more likely to rub off.
That’s awesome! I’m going to Costa Rica in a few weeks for an 8 day surfing school and I have enough sunscreen for a family of four, and am still thinking of packing another couple of bottles. I am pretty fair and I’ve had a couple of quite serious burns so the health factor on top of a sudden realisation of the ageing effects of sun, well… My concern is that I will remember to reapply often because I’m just not in the habit and I really never do beach holidays so it’s definitely not in my mind as a routine.
Excellent idea bout the stick for hairline, etc, I’m going to have to go out and add one of those to my collection.
Good luck with your 1/2 marathon, Catherine!
Hope your training and race go well, Catherine!
This year my serious sun (running, biking, hiking) sunscreen is the new Badger http://www.badgerbalm.com/p-485-spf-35-sport-sunscreen-unscented.aspx – I trust the brand as I’ve been using http://www.badgerbalm.com/p-462-spf-30-unscented-sunscreen.aspx for a long time and never had a burn. I made it through last summer with no color at all (my goal). The newer one I like better so far because of its higher spf, plus it feels less oily on the skin. Both don’t leave any whiteness on me when applied properly, though I am pale.
I’m loving Dr. Robin sunscreen. Anthro stocked it last summer which is where I found it. It is both UV & UVB 30+ and chem free. Paraben, fragrance and phthalate free too. No nano. Check it out here http://www.drrobin.com it’s not greasy btw.
I mainly use Karen’s Botanicals or Green Beaver (Canadian brand) for sunscreen. I tend to burn on my head though, so I wear a hat whenever possible, but I was thinking of getting something like Go!Screen powder for my hairline and hair separation. Has anyone tried it? It contains few ingredients. I know that powder sunscreen is not the best because it can be inhaled. But honestly who really reapplies cream sunscreen once their makeup is on? I don’t reapply unless I’m at the beach (hence not wearing much makeup at all). I’m thinking a bit of powder could be the solution for those days when the sun creeps on you by surprise…
Nice routine – thanks for sharing.
@Emma: that is my eternal question – how to reapply sunscreen once you have your makeup on. How on earth to do you keep protected during the whole day, if you have a bit of tinted moisturizer and blush on? If you reapply makeup, the whole thing gets mixed up, plus I would get the feeling that my skin would get clogged.
How does everyone else do it?
Great idea with the sunscreen stick! I am such a stickler for sunblock and this is really a great idea to put on a quick layer on those really sensitive spots on the go.
Went out and bought a Badger SPF 30 stick.
Has anyone tried the new ThinkBaby and ThinkSport sunscreens? I think they are both made by the LiveStrong Foundation. I am particularly intrigued by the ThinkBaby because it’s available in SPF50+. It’s really rare to get such a high protection from a physical sunblock.
