Naomi’s Morning Skin and Hair Routine… Exposed!

Hey all! Hope you are still enjoying these AM routines as much as we are. Please keep submitting if you haven’t yet! Today’s comes to us from Naomi, who is still using a product from the Quarterly subscription (yay!) and lots of other fun ones too… Read on!

Name: Naomi
Age
: 39 (ouch!)
Current weather
: schizophrenic!  NYC trying desperately to molt into spring
Hair
: chin length, fine, fairly straight dirty blonde without highlights but currently sun-kissed blonde (with highlights)
Skin
: Fair-to-medium complexion, pernickety temperament – still experiencing a dose of winter dryness but currently pretty clear and smooth, just needing extra care and moisturising

Naomi is a regular around these parts, and Siobhan even had the pleasure of meeting her once at an event in New York. Herewith, her awesome routine!

In the shower…

Quick hair wash with California Baby Tea Tree shampoo (every week or two I use Ctonics Tantra shampoo for flakes) followed by a light condition with Suki conditioner. I use Clarisonic on my face (and sometimes décolleté) with Wei Beauty Chinese Rose Foaming Cleanser. Pits & bits get a wash with soap, currently using the one that came in my first Quarterly box (one personal care item that’s soooo easy to keep clean!). Every couple of weeks I do a full body scrub with one of the 100% Pure scrubs (not a purchase, it was free when I bought products a while back). When I don’t have a body scrub product (which I don’t tend to buy, I only use them if they came with something else) I use a body brush or the equivalent with a bit of my soap

Outside the shower…

I use one of three serums: Suki targeted bio-brightening face serum; Kahina Giving Beauty serum (a fave!); or One Love Morning Glory (compliments of a recent NMDL Friday Deal – thanks!). Then I use either 100% Pure Organic Coffee Bean Caffeine eye cream or Origins GinZing Refreshing eye cream, depending on if I feel puffiness or dark circles are a problem. After that, I us either 100% Pure Organic Pomegranate Antioxidant Hydration SPF20 or (if I’m definitely not spending any time outside) Bee Yummy Skin Food. It’s Vive Sana Polar to Solar sunscreen if I’ll be spending any real time outside, like weekends. A couple of times I week I moisturise with either Evan Healy body oil or Acure Organics Cocoa Butter + CoQ10 body lotion. I put MJ’s Herbals arnica salve on any bruises, Kahina argan oil on any extra dry patches or eczema and every couple of weeks, on days I’m only running errands or not going out in public at all, I use Kahina argan oil as a treatment on my hair and leave it in until the next day’s shampoo. Every day in winter, or as little as possible in the good weather, I blow dry my hair.

Finishing touches…

I love RMS un-coverup. Sometimes, depending on how “good” my skin is, I use Vapour Organic Beauty Atmosphere Luminous Foundation. Then I like Revolution Organics Freedom Glow Beauty Balm as blush, RMS Beauty cream eye shadow in Solar or Lunar, Shu Uemura eyelash curler, Josie Maran mascara, Anastasia Perfect Brow pencil, Dior Lip Maximiser or RMS Beauty lip balm. Okay, so now I can really see why the Desert Island Challenge was too hard for me… :)

Ha! Is she awesome, or what?

And can I just add that the latest Quarterly delivery was AWESOME!!!

  2. Rebecca R says:

I’m liking the One Love Organics Morning Glory oil too. I use it as my daytime moisturizer. It’s funny, before I was using an oil free one on my very oily skin, but I find that my skin seems to be less oily when I use facial oils instead..weird!

  3. Liz says:

Question: Why doesn’t the Josie Maran mascara get a link? Didn’t you guys feature her one time?

  4. Siobhan says:

@Liz “oversight” is the only reason haha

  5. Sylvie says:

@Liz — all linked up now :) My mistake!

  6. Hey everyone! I’m new to this site and really enjoy reading all the morning beauty routines. I’m trying to clean out all my products and go totally natural, inspired by you all! I was thinking, though, it would be another fun segment to hear about people’s night-time routines before bed. Washing, moisturizing, etc.. I think that might be just as important for our bodies/skin as our morning routines. Just a thought! :-)

What’s the Quarterly Delivery? I need to know!

  8. Rebecca says:

Love the use of Kahina argan oil! RMS solar is such a gorgeous color, I’ve used it some already and it will get lots more use throughout the warmer months.

  9. Naomi says:

The Quarterly mailing this time included:
Wei of Chocolate Wei Relaxed (yum!)
Blissoma Harmony candle (I love this brand)
Full size (!) Lotus Wei Quiet Mind Energy Mist
    Essence of Vali Sleep

All things I totally use and such a generous package!

Ok, this is going to be a bit weird but… should women be washing their “bits” with soap? I’ve heard it mentioned several times on this site. I was just wondering if that’s good for our bits because I remember being told growing up that soap is too harsh down there and we should only use specially-formulated washes (not douches). Of course, that was probably all marketing bunk by these wash companies. These days I just use a drop of Dr. Bronner’s soap mixed in my palm with water, but I still wonder if I should be doing that or not. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

  11. OMG, the best thing about B&W pictures is that they always looked good in that, these we have ultra HD cameras that pick up each and every minor skin blemishes.

  12. Naomi says:

@Kat – I’ve heard the same, about disrupting the delicate pH balance, etc. I find clean soaps very gentle and I do quite a light wash. I tend to be a very warm person and just need to feel I’ve freshened up so going completely without soap of any kind doesn’t work for me. More than any other clean product, a clean cleanser (face or body) made the most difference and the most immediately. My skin isn’t dry and flaky and itchy and uncomfortable any more, even in winter. I can be really lazy about body lotion whereas I used to absolutely need it every single day or I would be tormented. So I figure as long as we’re careful (everything in moderation, and all) it’s probably fine.

@Kat, when I talk about washing “bits” I’m not meaning the vulva/vagina – but rather the general pubic area around that. Basically where hair grows. For me, the more delicate parts just get a rinse. I used to use soaps more, but as I’ve aged and my skin all over my body has changed, I definitely don’t want soap on my vulva. You are spot on about the marketing of “feminine wash” type products. I talk to my anatomy & physiology students about all that marketing crap and how the body really works. There are reasons one might use certain products on the vulva/vagina. For example an ACV and water douche is helpful for yeast infection prevention, like when you can feel one starting. I feel that certain oils (like coconut) are very soothing to irritated tissue and can also be used as a lubricant (yeah, coconut oil is good for EVERYTHING). Other than a few situations where one might use a gentle product on the vulva/vagina, we should probably be leaving that area alone and let it do it’s normal job of taking care of itself. For those using gentle and clean soap on those parts, as long as you aren’t experiencing irritation it’s probably fine. Just look out for the hormonal changes your body experiences and how that might need to change your use of products.
