Your Quarterly Packages Have Started Arriving!
Thank you all for being so patient with our first Quarterly mailing. We are thrilled to see that you have started receiving your packages and if Twitter is any indication (and let’s be honest, it usually is) you all seem happy so far!
Maybe, then, you would like to tweet about it with the hashtag #NDL01? I mean, if you feel like it. Bonus points if you also include a link to our site.
Kisses and hugs

Did I totally miss this? How do we get on the list?
You totally have my permission. In fact, I’m currently writing a whole blog post about it to go up tomorrow with pics of the unboxing.
Honestly I was pretty dissapointed, for all of the anticipation and the 15 bucks I expected more than three items, as much as I appreciate the thought it just seems like I should have gotten more for my money but I’m also used to getting Eco emi boxes every month for the same price with loads of stuff in it and it doesn’t help that I cannot use the deo as I’m allergic to baking soda. Sad day, hopefully future boxes will be a bit more exciting for me and thanks guys for trying something new.
huuummm is this the thing for which we had to pay in order to receive free products? Help please :(
Let me clarify, it’s not that it was just three items it was that none of said items were really spectacular to me, as a follower of this site I expected to try new products i might not normally buy, but I’ve already tried the deo and have a body brush. The only thing that’s new to me is the soap which does smell nice though I think my boyfriend likes the smell more than me. I love the effort to branch out though.
Oh man, SAD FACE! Sorry you didn’t like it, Reese! Maybe next time and in the mean time we’d encourage you to share with others what you don’t like yourself… Pass along the gift of clean :)
It’s here if you want to still sign up for the next one, folks! : )

Presume this is US only…………..??Waving from all the way over in Australia??
Thanks Renee. I didn’t sign up for this mailing and, now, have no regrets. I’ve made a couple of requests on the blog for information on body brushing. I would have been really disappointed receiving a body brush without prior information as to what it is actually used for and the results one can expect. I also don’t like the plug to promote the website. Not cool, Kyle.
I, on the other hand, was very happy! It is a nice, fun, mixture of things.
The brush came with instructions from us on how to use it actually, and not to sound defensive (that means I’m about to sound really defensive!): We ask people to plug our site, not Quarterly’s site, because we want you guys to spread the word about what we are doing over here, every day: writing, engaging, sharing, for free.
Very excited! My Quarterly arrived today! I was jealous of the people who received it yesterday! Will be posting to my blog soon about trying the products you’ve selected! x
I was THRILLED to receive the box last night and even more excited when I saw what was inside! I had just decided to start body brushing and was trying to find a good body brush. I knew it was meant to be when I got the perfect brush in the Quarterly box! I am already a Soapwalla devotee, but am almost at the end of my stash and happy to get another jar. And the soap smells amazing! I can’t wait to see what future boxes hold. Keep up the good work!
I wish I signed up for this one! I’ve been wanting a body brush, and I love Soapwalla deodorant.
Only $15 Renee? Lucky. I paid $30 for mine and that was with a $5 discount.. to get it a lll the way up to Canada… which still hasn’t arrived. I just looked into that Eco Emi thing you mentioned, looks cool.. but for us Canadian chicks it is $30 a month (vs. the US $15) which is like $360 a year can someone say ouch?
I can’t find a good Canadian alternative.
If there was a way for your Canadian devotees to subscribe, that would be awesome. :)
Was very excited to receive my package the other day! I’ll share what I already have or can’t use, and enjoy what I can for myself. : )
Renee not Reese :p and I will. All in all I think it’s a great idea and I applaud the effort. I just expected something different. I’m not saying other people won’t enjoy it as I know many have and will. And it’s the first box, I’m sure in the future (at least I hope) things will be a bit more impressive to me and if not no big deal it’s just not something that’s for me. I still love you guys and everything your trying to do.
I’m sorry, but I’m with Renee, I was disappointed. I enjoyed the packaging and thought the descriptions of products and instructions that came with them were amusing and informative, but I can’t justify spending $27 for a body brush I already own, a deodorant I’m allergic to, and a bar of soap, even if it smells great! I think I was expecting additional items, or samples even, something more to make the cost seem worthwhile. If you’re new to NMDL, then the Quarterly mailing was a good introduction, but having been a book reader from the beginning and daily blog reader, it seemed repetitive. I also don’t agree with Quarterly charging my credit card on November 14th and not sending anything until January 17th without any kind of explanation, unless that was always the way things worked and I completely missed it. I’ve unsubscribed, just hope that they don’t charge my credit card again seeing as my subscription ends on the day of the next billing… Will continue to be a devoted reader of this site though, love the work you ladies do and the community you’ve built here
I was a little bit disappointed by the mailing too, since I also have a body brush and had literally just gotten new Soapwalla deodorant (same day, different package. It was actually kind of funny.) It seems like a lot of regular readers probably already use or have atleast tried both. I was hoping for more products by companies I hadn’t yet heard much about, or new products from brands we all love!
At the same time, however, it made sense to me since Soapwalla is a company you ladies raaave over and body brushing is a ritual commonly discussed on the site and more than a few people always have questions about.
On the plus side for me: I am in a new, long distance relationship so a smaller body brush and an extra deodorant that I can keep packed in my bag is definitely handy. Forgetting deodorant is always horrible, ESPECIALLY when you only use clean products (and so few clean deos work!)
I’m looking forward to the next Quarterly, I just hope the next batch of products is slightly less…obvious, I suppose.
I was thrilled with my box as I value quality over quantity. A Naturopathic Doctor introduced me to skin brushing many years ago, and I was due for a new body brush. This one is softer than my previous ones. I’m just wondering if you’re supposed to clean them and how? I’ve been wanting to try the soapwalla deodorant, and I’m happy to report it’s the best. I will be buying some for my friends. Lastly, the lavender soap is keeping the moths away by living in my sweater drawer. Lavender is excellent moth repellent. The only thing missing? Some Lotus Wei mist and Alexandra and Siobhan to help me finish cleaning out the toxic cosmetics in my drawers :)
Well hell, I liked it. I’ve already used the body brush twice (I have one, but I actually like the bristles on the one you guys sent better so hooray). The soap is just my type of smell, and once I free up some bar soap space in my shower (got a little carried away over Christmas…), it’ll be next in line. The deodorant was a miss for me because I tried Soapwalla for a while, but it was irritating for my skin (I just use a baking soda/water paste now, to great effect). But it’s a great product and I hope to pass it on to someone with less sensitive skin. And the insert was very informative and I liked it. Thanks, guys! Looking forward to next time.
I’m not signed up on the quarterly. It sounds like a box I would have enjoyed! My Soapwalla deodorant (huge fan!) is almost out and I’m scrambling to put together an order on SBL to try and get free shipping…
Also, since everyone is so happy with this particular body brush (the soft brissels, etc.), could someone please let me know which brand it is? I’ve been searching on Spirit Beauty Lounge and there are toooo many choices for me to make up my mind as to which one will be the best introduction to body brushing.
Thank you very much!
i was excited when i opened the box! I’ve been wanting to try soapwalla for about a year now, but just haven’t been able to force myself to order it, so problem solved! same thing with the body brushing. i wasn’t sure which brush to use and exactly how to use it, so now i don’t have to worry about figuring that out. The brush feels great! and the soap smells amazing! i also found the letter to be very informative and sweet. can’t wait for the next box! thank you!
Wishing I had signed up but don’t even know if it’s available for Canadians. I only heard about body-brushing from your morning-routine series and I’m intrigued but don’t know if there’s a certain kind of brush and I guarantee you I won’t be able to find one in town (Whitehorse, YT). I’ve also been wanting to try Soapwalla, and get my boyfriend to try it as well, so a sample size would have been awesome!
Loved my box. I have been meaning to get the Soapwella. I do have a body brush so yes I will share with a friend. I am a BIG fan of the body brushing. I know that you can’t please everyone but it keep on trying….
Always plug the site and the book. You girls are the best.
I was happy to see the long awaited package arrive, I love the element of surprise and I’m not at all disappointed with what was chosen to go into the box. I don’t already have a body brush (and this is a great excuse to try using one) and I’m excited to try the new soap. What does confuse me, though, is the deoderant: it arrived with the lid falling off, there is only about 1/3 of the product in the jar and the product itself seems to have gone off / funny / whatever as it is a completely different look to the Soapwalla I have had in the past and I’m inclined to toss it as I suspect it’s not quite right. (Perhaps I got a dud jar?) Shame, it makes the $25 I paid (who paid $15 and how?!?) not quite stretch to being worth it. :(
I think some people have a serious misunderstanding about the point of this website, the book, and the Quarterly offer.
This isn’t meant to provide you with the best in de rigueur green products. This isn’t meant to be Birchbox.
Everything I mentioned above is part of a multipronged campaign to encourage people to use green/clean (whatever term you prefer they are not mutually exclsuive) products. Obviously the website, being the easiest and most accessible portal to “The Message”, will be prominently featured. Many people these days cannot be bothered to purchase or read a book but a website will reach them quickly.
The Quarterly package fulfills this mission along with providing you a sample (not a full kit for your whole daily routine) of some of the things you can enjoy if you decide to invest (and it is an investment….Aveeno, Neutrogena, and the like will always be cheaper) in greener living.
Whether you can afford Kahina or a 7 dollar bottle of jojoba oil from Trader Joe’s, the point is to begin exploring greener options and this blog, the book, and the other offers associated with those are intended as a jumping off point, not a one-stop shop for all things green.
Anything that brings people back to this website or reminds you to send people to the website is increasing the audience of the green message and THAT is precisely the name of the game.
Wow. I am surprised at all the nasty comments I’ve seen so far.
IT WAS GREAT GIRLS! I loved getting my package first thing in the morning on my way to work from the post office. I opened it with my co-workers eagerly looking over my shoulder and they loved it too! I already dry brush, use a clean bar soap, and soapwalla deo BUT I LOVE these things! I like stocking up on good products and the brands of the bar soap and dry brush were new to me! The dry brush feels really great-softer than my first. I am so thankful to be a part of this. It was like a second Christmas. Keep it up ladies! Looking forward to the next mailing. It is my joy to keep letting others know about your blog and book.
Ditto, @Naomi– I had really high hopes for this exciting package, and when it arrived I found the lid of my Soapwella jar was not sealed and it was only 1/3 full. :( I already have a body brush I love, and my uber sensitive skin does not like soap. While I loved the wrapping paper and the sweet note with instructions, that was all I could use from this package. I guess I could give the soap and brush away as gifts, but I have to toss out the deodorant as I’m not sure it is safe to use. I am disappointed and sad I spent my money on this.
I love what you ladies have done with the blog and the book, and will continue reading. I hope you can sort out what happened with the deodorant for Naomi and I.
Thanks @JJ. I feel like you completely nailed what we are trying to do here and we couldn’t have articulated it as well ourselves.
Thanks to you all for your candor.
I have to say, I was a bit disappointed at first.
Mostly because I had to wait for so long for this package, and I was expecting more than 3 products. For $25.
At the same time, I had been looking for the perfect brush for a long time, and I just love love this one!
I can say I am very happy with the products, and I understand they are full size “expensive” products, so it’s actually a good deal. My suggestion would be for the next one to include maybe some sample size items, or mini size. Something a bit more exciting! Like a mini lipstick, or a mascara, or a natural perfume (I understand we were covering the basics here, just suggestions for the next time!)
Saying this, I used all the 3 items and really loved them! :)
I liked it, too! My deodorant container was only partially filled, too, but it was sealed, so I think it was supposed to be a sample size. I didn’t expect perfection (obviously, you can’t please everyone) and I was still excited about the contents of the mailing. I already use Soapwalla and have a body brush and clean bar soap, but the brush is more portable than my other one and the scent of the soap is not one I would have chosen for myself (but I like the way it smells!). I remain subscribed and I loved the story…keep up the good work!! :)
Ah, okay it maybe wasn’t supposed to be a full sized deo, which makes sense to me and isn’t an issue. Just sorry it seems to be off but these things happen. (I’d probably be upset if it was something I hadn’t tried but since I’m already a Soapwalla fan it’s okay.) I hope they manage to smooth out their charge-to-ship schedule and I’m staying subscribed for the next lot of goodies!
I quite enjoyed the box and notes!
Except for the deodorant which was not closed all the way and leaked all over the box and the other products leaving only a very small amount left in the jar.. super disappointed since it is a product I have been wanting to try.
I liked the note, and I don’t have a body brush, loved the soap smell, and have wanted to try the Soapwalla deodorant. I think, though, with something like this, where I don’t choose the items myself, I expect the value of the products to exceed what I’m paying. Otherwise I might as well just buy them outright. It’s a fun way to discover things, and since there’s most likely a discount on Quarterly’s end (buying things in bulk, sending them to new customers who aren’t choosing them), we should see that too. If the Soapwalla was a full size (mine didn’t seem to be, and it wasn’t sealed either) maybe that would be the case (?). Not meaning to hate on things, but thought you might like some honest feedback.
I enjoyed getting my box. The packaging was fun, the body brush is much better than the one I already have, my Soapwalla jar is almost empty and the lavender soap is lovely. Thanks for your wonderful web site and the tremendous job you both do researching safe beauty products!
Hi all,
Thanks so much for your feedback! The deodorants were sample sized (1 oz vs the typical 2 oz – the deodorant instructions that came with your box stated the size difference), and I’m sorry for any confusion on this matter.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if I can answer any specific questions for you!
Thanks again, and thanks SOOOOOO much to the NMDL ladies for your tireless work!
Rachel, Soapwalla Chef
Im sorry for the confusion guys, I payed 25 not 15 like I thought and I agree with Janet. I’m sorry if it appears like Im being rude because that’s truly not what I was hoping to come across, I just wanted to give honest feedback. So let’s get down and dirty (get it get it, no more dirty looks…down and dirty….come on its funny) here, even if there was no discount, added up the brush is 12.00 (and every time I touch it bristles pop out and I haven’t even really used it yet. Just run my hand across it though it very well could be my brush) the soap is 5.00 and since it’s a sample of deo instead of the normal 10.00 let’s say it’s 5.00. Total that’s 23.00 so that leaves 2.00 for shipping. Add that to having to wait 3 months and not getting to choose what you get or have any idea….it’s really not that great of a deal all that’s saved is shipping. Now, I also agree with jj that it’s not really about the amount that you get but that you may very well be exploring new things and branching out but in an economy like ours it’s impoArtant that we know we are getting what we pay for. And if we aren’t there’s a problem. No one likes to feel like they are waisting the money they earn especially when it isnt a huge amount that they make and every penny counts. Im just trying to give another persons point of view and hope it isn’t making anyone angry. Because that’s really not the goal. The goal is to be informed and try and help improve a seriously great idea. I personally believe we should have gotten more for the amount payed.
I still haven’t received my package. :( I adore NMDL, but my experience with Quarterly.co customer service has been awful.
I, like JJ, would like to be candid. If individuals aren’t happy with the Quarterly shipment then they should be able to say so without having to explain themselves or posting again to clairfy that they didn’t mean to come off as rude.
This should be a forum where people can express their opinions in a honest way. If you don’t happen to like their opinion – tough. That’s the way the ball rolls. But they should never be made to feel hesitant about writing what they feel or watering down their opinions. It’s not personal.
The last thing we want is for everyone to agree that something is super great because there’s no growth from that.
If you didn’t love the shipment, great. If you loved it, that’s great too.
Thanks to ALL of you for your feedback and constructive criticism. This, like everything, is a work in progress and your comments help! Happy Sunday!
Chrissy: your candor is underwhelming.
Ouch. First really mean post I’ve seen on this website. I always enjoy all the opinions on the comments threads and often find my own path through synthesizing the differing perspectives. Let’s all try to stay nice to each other, regardless of our own opinions.
Kat; My dharma isn’t interested in your magic power crystal chakra. We’re not on the same wavelength but I wish you most peaceful synthesis and feng shui.
JJ – Here’s a little tip: being a bitchy queen isn’t making anyone want to use cleaner products more.
Chrissy anger is so unbecoming among women. I sent positive vibrations to you from a better spiritual place.
Ps I am female. Women should uplift one another.

The body brush..hog’s hair? Really?
