What 5 Products Would You Take on a Desert Island?

We have a tough question to ask you, one that we’ve been asking ourselves.

If you could only use 5 products—total—what would they be? Yep, it’s that childhood game, and we’re gearing up to make it a challenge, so think carefully: What would you take with you on a desert island?

Alexandra would probably take Rare Elements Conditioner, Tammy Fender Repair Balm, RMS lip-to-cheek in Rapture (though she’d shed a big tear for Ilia’s Bang Bang), Afterglow Concealer in Praline, and a good bar of soap. Or no soap—the ocean will clean her!—and her Laura Mercier waterproof mascara instead? Ugh, tough decisions.

Siobhan would take her Acure Shampoo (hydrating enough for her to forgo conditioner), Tata Harper’s Refreshing Cleanser, Laura Mercier Minerals (they’re clean!), 100% Pure Mascara and, like her pal, the Tammy Fender Repair Balm.

Now, tell us in the comments what you would take, and begin to mentally gear up for one of our most exciting (and challenging) challenges yet!

My picks would be: Kahina Facial Cleanser + Toning Mist + Argan Oil (which could do others duties such as eye cream, lip balm, body oil, hair finishing touch and sun protectant), the two remaining choices: baking soda to wash my hair and my DIY deodorant.

  2. Mimi says:

    Argan Oil
    Vitamin E Oil
Dr. Weil for Origins Mega Mushroom Skin Relief Serum
John Masters Honey & Hibiscus Hair Reconstructor
    Vodka*

    *For beachy highlights, Silly!

  3. Kate says:

Thanks to the two of you, I am practically down to five products already (really!!):

    Argan oil
apple cider vinegar/baking soda for cleaning hair (I’m counting this as one, because HONEST it is all I use in my hair now, and they double as some of the food items I would take :)
    Dr. Bronner’s lavender castille soap
    100% pure mascara
    RMS lip2cheek

This makes for very easy trip-packing!

  4. Dawn says:

Easy! I’d take baking soda, Bragg’s Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, Organic/Unrefined Coconut Oil, Organic Argan Oil, and Dr. Bronner’s Lavender Liquid Castile Soap.

  5. We are tooting our own horn here but this is the perfect question for Skin & Bones – it belongs in your top 5 products on an island because it is a multi-use moisturizer and unisex – great for face + body + hair – and the scent is glorious…

  6. Dylan says:

Oooh! This is a good question!

First product that comes to mind, so probably most important: my castor oil/olive oil cleanser.
Sunscreen! Maybe Badger SPF 30 or Chocolate Sun.
I’m with Alexandra on taking RMS lip2cheek in rapture. No matter what, it makes me feel beautiful!
Definitely Chagrin Valley’s face and eye mousse (the bestest moisturizer I’ve ever ever used on my sensitive and acne prone skin).
Ok. This is getting real. I can’t decide between a conditioner (I thought maybe I would just use my castor/olive oil combo, but without shampoo – which I would definitely not bring – I can’t solve when I put too much oil in). Probably Kiss My Face in Miss Treated. Or would I bring RMS un-cover up? Or would I bring my Honeybee Garden’s mascara to cover my blonde blonde lashes?

Oh god, this is making me realize how horrible I am at packing when I travel.

  7. Lolly says:

Ooh, fun! This one’s a bit easier for me, I suppose, since I only use makeup for special occasions and I don’t imagine the desert islands will have too many cocktail parites. Plus, I don’t use conditioner. So, without much ado, here are my Five Faves:
    1) Acure Shampoo in Pure Mint and Echinacea (thanks for the recommendation, ladies! I have tried Rahua and CTONICS and Acure is miles better);
    2) Tammy Fender Spontaneous Recovery Creme;
    3) Kahina Argan Oil;
    4) Nude Foaming Face Wash (normally, I prefer to use a balm cleanser, but the Nude foaming wash is lovely and I imagine I wouldn’t want to faff around with wash cloths on a desert island);
    5) 100% Pure Sunblock (gotta protect against that hot island sun and, hopfully, with nothing to do on the island I will actually remember to use my damn sunblock)

  8. charlotte says:

    id take:
    jojoba oil
    neem oil
    rose water
darcys botanicals coconut & lavender shampoo bar
    and hurraw! night lipbalm

  9. Michelle says:

    oh this is tough..

    Acure Shampoo
Yarok Feed Your Ends. (I’m in love with this product, it has a lovely smell and keeps my course/frizzyish hair so soft!)
Pai Camellia & Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser w/ included muslin cloth so I’m counting this as one.
Coconut Oil, can’t live without it
hmm, final product.. so many to choose. I’m going to say that if I’m on a desert island then I wouldn’t need any makeup to impress or make myself look older so I think I’d forgo those. I’d say RMS Lip & Skin Balm or Intelligent Nutrients Lip Nutrition. For my perpetually chapped lips… I can’t not bring something!

  10. sam says:

I would take Rahua Shampoo, Rahua Conditioner, Kahina Giving Beauty Oil, Tata Harper cleanser, and rms living luminizer :D
    Love your idea ladies <3

  11. shelby says:

    -coconut oil
-john masters organics evening primrose shampoo
    -dr hauschka liquid concealer
    -rms lip2cheek in modest
-butter london in “come to bed red” (i need something fun and colorful!)

  12. philosophotarian says:

Desert island? Are there boys on this island?

Let’s see…I’ll do without soap and enjoy the benefits of saltwater. I’ll bring along (1) coconut oil/cream for moisture and protection; (2) Mirasol Farm lavender tangerine lip balm; (3) okay, I’ll bring along my new Mirasol Farm face lotion because it smells so pretty; (4) safety razor and blade sharpener (what? these don’t count?) (5) toothbrush and tooth powder.

  13. zimt-peppermint says:

    RMS luminizer
Alverde eyebrow pencil in blonde (it’s perfect for my red hair…^^)
\Rhassoul powder\ to clean my hair. I hope that’s the correct translation. I love it, you should try it!
    Olive Oil
    Sun Screen!

Will you do a meditation challenge again? I’m trying to do the 28 Day Meditation Challenge this month.

  14. Naomi says:

    Ooh, I love this game!

Kahina Argan Oil (the biggest vat I could fill) – I can use as a moisturiser (face / elbows / etc), cuticle oil, lip care, hair conditioner, eye treatment and I have just discovered it totally healed up a raw, painful would-not-go-away patch of eczema on my eyelid when everything else was completely ineffective and I was about to go to the dermatologist

    Kahina cleanser

    100% Pure sun lotion

    100% Pure mascara

    Tom’s of maine toothpaste

(Can I please bring my Clarisonic and my electric toothbrush, puh-leeeeeze???) ;)

  15. Rebecca says:

    Awesome question!

    1. Rose of Sharon Acres Coconut Milk Shampoo and Body Bar
    2. Kahina Argan Oil
    3. Badger sunscreen

but there would be a lot of things I’d miss!

  16. Stephanie says:

Manuka Honey, Lavender Hydrosol, Aubrey’s Pure Aloe, Pure Jojoba Oil, Vive Sana Sunscreen (or if it’s not a “true” desert island but just five things this gal CANNOT live without 100% Pure Mascara)

  17. Tea says:

I find this kind of easy!

    - Moogoo milk wash
    - Moogoo Full Cream
    - Nourish Naturals Dry Hair Conditioner, because sea water is cleansing and a little drying
    - Miessence Tahitian Breeze deodorant
    - Wotnot Sunscreen

  18. Sarah says:

    Organic, Raw coconut oil
Couleur Caramel Cils court mascara in black (and an eyelash curler!)
Skin & Bones Luxurious Treatment oil- I use this EVERYWHERE
    Baking soda
    Intelligent Nutrients Jasminas

  19. 1. Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay
    2. Egyptian Magic All Purpose Skin Cream
    3. Kinky-Curly Curling Custard
    4. A Razor
    5. Lauren Brook Cosmetics Botanical Lip Gloss in “Winterberry”

    xo

  20. Anne says:

    1. Organic Argan, coconut or extra-virgin olive oil
    2. Castille soap bar
    3. Manuka honey
    4. Lavera mascara
    5. Raw aloe for hair gel & healing*

*I’m hoping this is a “Black Stallion” type of scenario, because I’d still miss my Suki lip color and Lavera tinted moisturizer & eye pencil. Just went with the basics.

  21. Alyssa M says:

    This is hard!
    1. Marie Veronique Moisturizing Face Screen (preferably a neverending supply)
    2. Rare Elements conditioner
    3. Couleur Caramel volumizing mascara in black
    4. Deodorant (currently using Old Spice..)
    5. Tarte Matte bronzer

  22. Mary says:

    I would bring

    2. Dr Bronner’s Tea Tree soap, because I could use it to wash my face, hair, anything
    3. Any bronzer, maybe Alima Pure’s
    4. Any brown mineral eye shadow for eye liner and shadow.
    5. Gabriel mascara

  23. Keely says:

Ooo fun! Um lets see… coconut oil, rose hydrosol mist, a blend of jojoba oil + rose otto essential oil, soleo organics sunscreen, and a dry body brush (if that counts?) Now, more about that deserted island …

  24. Stark says:

Stop the presses! Will there, or won’t there be coconuts on this island?

  25. danielle says:

I would need coconut oil for my skin, baking soda for my hair (and DIY deodorant and tooth whitener), apple cider vinegar as a hair rinse( and to drink daily for health), Rose of Sharon Acres toothsoap w/a toothbrush and a tube of clean mascara. That all-and a good bathing suit of course!

    1. Alkaitis treatment oil
    2. Tammy fender neroli cream
    3. rms luminizer
    4. rms lip shine
    5. w3ll narcissist

Also, if anyone is interested in tammy fender purifying cleanser, tammy fender clarifying dermagel, or alkaitis facewash shoot me an email. I have full sizes that I purchased and used small amounts but have since found other products that suit my skin better. Would hate for this stuff to go to waste. wytheandmetropolitan[at]gmail [dot]com.

  27. Kate m says:

    1. Sevani eye repair cream, thanks to your review, already I see a difference and had never heard of them!
    2. Argan Oil for body and hair (may try Sevani’s now too, it’s organic)
    3. My eyelash curler, I think I would die without it.
    4. Trader Joes peppermint conditioner, the knots make me nuts and nothing else gets them out!
    5. Sevani rapid renewal cream, another new fav!

    Love this topic, thanks!

    Tea Tree oil
    Jojoba Oil
    burt’s bees honey lip balm
    aveeno body lotion (regular)
Full Moon Milk Soap in Tea Rose (locally made) http://fullmoonmilk.etsy.com

  29. bedesigner says:

    Currently…

Evan Healy Day Moisturizer & Rosehip Treatment Facial Serum
    Nude Advanced Eye Complex
    JMO Blood Orange Body Wash
    JMO Bare Body Lotion

  30. Ariel says:

    1. Andalou lavender shampoo
    2. John Masters lavender & avocado conditioner
    3. Ilia lip care in Blooming Lady
    4. Vapour Organics foundation
    5. BareMinerals lengthening mascara

If it were a legit desert island, I’d choose different things (i.e. sunscreen), but for everyday life, if I had to choose only five beauty products to use those would be it.

  31. Rae says:

    More of these, please!
    1) Josie Maran Argan Oil
    2) Dr. Bronner’s Lavender Soap
    3) Marie Veronique sunscreen
    4) Badger lip balm in mint

    1. Kahina Giving Beauty Argan Oil, for most everything
    2. Body Deli Desert Sage Wash for shampoo, soap, antibacterial
    3. Evan Healy Shea Butter for first aid, antibacterial, anything Argan Oil can’t do
    4. RMS UnCover-Up, to keep my face extra moisturized & pretty

Truly a desert island? I’d be crisp in minutes, so I’d have to bring
    5. Vive Sana Solar To Polar Ultra with me.
But proverbial, what can’t you do without desert island?
    5. Vapour Organic Beauty Aura Multi Use Stain (Enchant)

  33. Rebecca says:

Is the Tammy Fender Repair Balm worth the price tag? Seems expensive to me especially since most lotions I have end up half used in the back of the cupboard

  34. Priya says:

1.Tata Harper’s regenerating cleanser. Fell in LOVE with this
    2.Acure Organics Shampoo
    3.Intelligent Nutrients Serum

    5. Ila Spray for an Aura of Confidence

    Hi girls,

I absolutely love your blog, you are doing such a terrific job in bringing important topics and news in a cool and fun way! To be honest, I keep your posts open in browser windows for days at a time to read and re-read..!

    My top 5:
    1. Virgin Coconut Oil (seriously, this miracle worker does everything!)
    2. Dr. Hauschka Concealer – you never know who might join you on that island ;-)
    3. BITE lipstick in a cool, matte red – no need not to have fun on that island!
    4. Priti NYC polish in Lipstick Impatients – it’s so neon you won’t need a torch…
    5. a bees wax lip balm.

  36. K says:

How clean is Laura Mercier? Are all products safe to use if you wanna avoid chemicals etc.?

  37. Siobhan says:

Just the loose minerals. The line as a whole I would not and do not use. See our post about it here http://nomoredirtylooks.com/2011/03/five-foundations-we-love-part-1/
