Well+Good’s Number One Easiest, Laziest Holiday Health Tip
This tip from Well+Good caught our eye this weekend, and will definitely be a part of our holiday routine.
From their post:
If you’re not already drinking lemon water daily, it’s going to be your BFF this holiday season.
Squeezing a wedge or two of lemon into a glass of water is a super easy way to counteract the damage done by the holiday dessert table.
Why? In addition to being a top alkalizer (meaning it counterbalances your pHagainst acid-forming foods like sugar, alcohol, and fats), lemon water aids the digestive system, sparks your metabolism, and neutralizes stored toxins.
In other words, lemon water supports the work your over-taxed organs have to do to process your processed-food snacks. (This is why your acupuncturist might like you to start the day with it, too.)
So sipping some lemon water in between holiday cocktails—and or at your desk between the rounds of office cookies and cupcakes—helps your body handle the stress of indulging (and shake the guilt).
And a bonus for sippers: This could be your first holiday season with way less bloating or breakouts, and you may even skip the annual round of the sniffles.
Is lemon water already a regular part of your routine?

I am just curious…I love lemon water, but how could it be an alkalizer (basic) when it seems to me that lemon is purely acidic? Baking soda = alkalizer, but lemons?
I do agree that it is the best all-day drink though!
Lemon water, all day, all the time. I even put it in my vodka sodas. ;)
I agree it’s confusing! Apparently, it’s not about the pH of the actual food when it’s outside the body (i.e. meat would test alkaline) but about what it does during the digestive process. So as we digest the lemons or lemon water, they leave an alkaline environment in their wake.
Sounds like a good idea, my hubby is having digestive issues: maybe I will stick him on a lemon in his tea or water regime.
Quick question: does anyone know if the brand Thursday Plantation is ‘really clean’? I am considering getting their Shampoo and Condition, but wanted to make sure I wasn’t just getting something that promised ‘clean and natural’ and yet wasn’t.
Yes! Lemon squeezed into hot water- (green tea hot, not black tea hot)- is what gets me going in the morning! Coffee is crazy acidic, so my body can’t handle it every day, but hot lemon water really get my blood flowing! Love it for these cold winter months.
Yup, for 15 years now! It has slowly eclipsed everything but herbal tea & the occasional Coke. Hey, I was drinking almost ENTIRELY Coke when I started, 15 years ago! I did it to “fix” the taste of plain water (my guys’ ex’s trick, I owe her), but since then I’ve learned of all these lovely advantages I’m already getting; Such a Nice Surprise!
I was having hot lemon water daily for a while but I’m concerned about it eroding my enamel. I brush my teeth afterwards but it takes me a while to drink it so it sits on my teeth for a while.
Does it matter what temperature the water is? I’ve heard conflicting reports about it having to be hot water.
@Leah Whatever you do, do NOT brush your teeth right after an acidic drink or food. The acids soften your teeth and if you brush right afterwards, you’ll do even more damage to the enamel. Wait at least 10 minutes before brushing. I am also concerned about enamel erosion, since I’ve had a long history of dental problems thanks to a negligent dentist. I’m not sure if lemon water everyday is enough to hurt the enamel. I wish I could find out.
Yep! LOVE it with a dash of Stevia before my Green Juice for Breakfast (not as gross as it sounds, I promise)! ;) xo <3
I need to start doing this more regularly. I used to, when we had a massively producing lemon tree in the yard. Off to buy lemons.
I do this every day!! I started doing it at the beginning of the year when I did a self-designed cleanse, and quickly became addicted! It’s one of those not-too-common things that I know is good for me, but I can actually FEEL that it’s good for me too. You wouldn’t even have to tell me that lemon water has lots of benefits- I can feel how much better my body feels when I have it, and how crappy I feel when I don’t. I’ve actually gotten to the point where my body craves lemon water first thing in the morning. Glad to hear I wasn’t making it all up!
I never would have thought about lemon water as having so many benefits! I will definitely be getting some lemons on my next trip to the grocery store!!!
Funny how I just happened to have several rind-less lemons in my fridge after baking cookies; i was wondering how to best use the juice! Question: would putting fresh lime or orange juice in water have the same effect?
I get a bag of organic lemons from Trader Joe’s weekly!
Mmmm, I squeeze half a lemon into hot water and sometimes throw in a few goji berries to drink in the evening. Especially good in winter. I also think the lemon helps my skin (Vitamin C?)
Thanks for the tip! I’ll be picking up lemons later today.
