Do You Use a Vaporizer?
This post might be premature as I’ve only had one for two days now, but I am in love with my new humidifier (that’s Canadian for “vaporizer,” by the way).
My skin’s been pretty dry lately, despite the fact that I’m using a super rich new moisturizer by Tammy Fender (review coming soon), that eye serum by La Bella Figura, a gentle Tata Harper cleanser and my usual argan oil every night. I also eat plenty of good fats, drink lots of water and take omegas every day. So what gives?
Well, since the holiday season started I’ve probably (definitely) been drinking more alcohol, which is dehydrating and disrupts my sleep a little bit, which stresses out skin. Plus, the air has gotten a little drier outside and in; I live in a prewar building where I can’t easily control the heat, and the radiator is right next to my bed.
That’s why when it was suggested to me recently that I get a vaporizer, I jumped at the idea—not to mention it was on Alexandra’s list of winter skincare tips. Dry Montreal winters necessitated them, so we always had them in our rooms growing up, and I got another one years ago, a gift from an engineer who had designed the thing. But somewhere along the line I forgot they existed. Now, just two days in, it’s love all over again.
It’s admittedly a little humid in New York now, but I’m convinced, though I can’t prove it, that the last two nights I’ve slept better, probably because the moisture in the air makes me more comfortable and less likely to wake up parched and desperate for a sip of water. Also, seeing is believing: My skin is much more hydrated, as if by magic.
So what about you? Do you use one?

I’ve been thinking about getting one for weeks because my skin gets painful-dry in the winter, and this has convinced me. I hope I fall in love within 2 days, too!
I use a humidifier EVERY winter & I believe that it helps keep my skin from becoming super-dry and getting sick every other week :)
I just got one about a week ago because our heating system in our house is incredibly dry- I think it would be more effective if we had a smaller bedroom, but it does help me sleep (the white noise from having it on is an added plus!)
I can barely function without mine! I wake up with a sore throat, my eyes are so dry they are glued shut, my skin is dry, my nose hurts…can’t drink enough water…it’s awful! I love my humidifier. I have a GermGuardian that has a silver plate in the system so it’s anti-microbial. Make sure yours does to or clean it out a ton (if you’re using it occasionally) or you’ll start circulating mold through your air. But definitely, definitely recommend them.
And 2 days isn’t too soon to notice the difference! :)
I started using mine again 3 nights ago. After you guys posted the winter skincare tips I figured I should bust out the humidifier again. I’ve slept great the last 3 nights and my skin is less itchy. It doesn’t look any better, but it does feel better.
Bought a Humio humidifier with a compartment for putting in essential oils and love it. A full tank of water emits cool scented steam for around ten hours and it is very quiet and easy to keep clean. I have year round allergies and this helps this time of year.
I would not be able to breathe properly without one! In fact, it was recommended by my allergist long time ago as a MUST have for winter. I used to buy the cheaper ones before but those led to too much humidity at times, creating a problem with mold, so last winter I got an Air-O-Swiss one with a built in moisture gauge. It works fantastically well and you just need to set the percentage of humidity you want in the air and the unit will constantly monitor the air and turn on as needed. It is also very quiet and the easiest one to clean. I highly recommend having this humidifier in particular!
I use a humidifier in the winter. It definitely helps my skin, my houseplants, and my kitties skin. They get dandruff in the winter w/o it. I just bought a new ultrasonic one a few weeks ago to replace my filter model. I’ve heard it’s good to use either filtered water or distilled water in it otherwise a dusty- like film can develop on the furniture nearby. Also clean weekly with white vinegar to prevent mold.
We use it in our bedroom, mainly because my boyfriend gets awful nosebleeds in the winter, because it is so dry!! So last winter we got one, and boy as it made a difference!!!! I have notice my skind is much, much softer and I don’t need to use nearly as much lotion, and my bf’s nosebleeds are completely gone! Humidifers are wonderful :)
I, too, love my humidifier! Mine is ginormous, given I live in a shoebox sized condo, but I consider it the best roommate ever, after you kitten, of course! I like the feeling of walking into my very own rainforest at the end of the day :)
Ha, I’m born and bred californian, and to me a vaporizer is a device for some THC, while a humidifier is what you’re talking about!! Definitely both devices greatly improve a person’s well being!!
I moved from Georgia to NYC about five years ago, and my first winter sent me on a desperate search for a humidifier. I still haven’t gotten used to how dry it is here in the winters! Sometimes I nearly fall asleep on the subway because it seems as though the dry heat blasting onto the train instantly dehydrates me. I splurged on an Air-O-Swiss (AOS 7135) and it makes me so, so happy. Even my boyfriend–who’s from Massachusetts and never gave a second thought to the dry air–swears by it now. Better sleep (with less snoring), less fatigue, and less itchy skin. I love, love, love humidifiers.
I’m SO inspired to get one now! Can anyone recommend a good, fairly inexpensive brand?
While I enjoy the dewy feeling I get when I use a humidifier, proper care of it is quite difficult. And it might do more harm than good.
Unless you can stick to cleaning your machine every other day or so as recommended, I say you’d be wiser to skip it.

I need this humidifier, but balk at buying jugs of distilled water. We have beautiful water, filtered and from our well in our yard, a holy spot! What would happen to my Humio if I used our water? What if I ran it through a separate Brita filter first?
