My New Lazy Morning Trick: Applying Oils In the Shower! What Are Your Time (and Water) Saving Tips?

You know how you’re always told to apply moisturizer on damp or just-patted-dry skin to seal in the moisture? Well, when I can be bothered to moisturize my body in the first place, I do as I’m told: Pop out of the tub, and on goes the body oil.

Lately, though, my mornings have been a little lazier (not complaining!), which means by the time I’m in the shower, I’m looking to cut corners anywhere I can. So last week I grabbed my body oil and slathered it on in the shower, while my conditioner was working its magic (I typically leave conditioner on for a couple of minutes). As it turns out, I find this quite pleasant!

My current body oils—Lotus Wei’s Energy Serum, which you can use on your face as well, and Soapwalla’s body oil, which, yes, I am still loving—smell incredible, and when taken into a steamy shower there’s an aromatherapy effect that’s luxurious and spa-like. So I apply, rub it in, rinse off the excess (truthfully there never is any “excess,” actually), then pat dry. My skin’s been super soft!

The last couple of days I’ve done this on my face, too. As I’m winding down, I grab my Kahina (yes, still obsessed) and drop a quarter size of the oil onto my palms and then press my palms into my cheeks, neck and forehead. This has made the biggest difference, I think. My skin is getting a little drier with the seasons changing and the rain abating, at least for now, and the extra hit of moisture feels amazing.

So who else does this? Anyone? And if anyone else has time-saving shower tips, we’d love to hear them.

I sometimes do body oils in the shower but it bugs me that I seem to get it on surfaces and then it’s harder to clean the tub. Maybe I’m just sloppy!

My time saving thing is to brush teeth in the shower – I keep a separate brush and toothpaste in there. Sometimes I’m brushing while I’m letting a cleanser or mask sit on my skin for a while, or sometimes just enjoying the hot water but still accomplishing something. Also, sometimes I’ll put on a mask (like honey), and let it sit while I shave my legs.

I’m very excited about this idea! I’ve also been using Lotus Wei’s pure energy serum and I’m completely in love with it. Just imagining using it in a steamy shower is making me feel alive and relaxed already. I’ve also been using skinnyskinny’s rose almond soap on occasion, and I find it’s really moisturizing and also smells amazing in the shower. The main ingredient is olive oil, so I haven’t found it to be drying at all (of course, I don’t use it on my whole body). Thanks for the tip!

Great idea! I’ve been using body oil(alternating between a few different ones bought at Mountain Rose)immediately after turning off the shower … And my skin loves it!…Now I will incorporate your tip for my facial oil as well. Double savings …time & toning mist! I’ll keep using toning mist for when I’m not stepping out of the shower, then. Thanks!

I’m going to try applying my face oil (also Kahina, I’m a devoted fan) in the shower. My skin has gone crazy dry and nothing is really working so fingers crossed this will help. I have no time saving tricks of my own to offer, I am super quick in the shower because since switching to Rahua my hair is in fantastic condition and I no longer need to do any lengthy treatments. (Although I suspect this is partly because I’m wearing it quite short these days, and longer hair just requires more attention, regardless of it’s condition, I think.)

I just started doing this last week! I also apply jojoba oil on my face before getting into the shower (after a quite wipe over with rose water in the morning) my skin is very sensitive and it stops my face getting red, itchy, aggravated and blotchy after a shower. Honestly didn’t really think it would work but I suppose it just repels the water. I think I read about it through mv organics, Australian skin care, and very nice too.

I’ve been doing this for a while. I wash my hair with Rahua if it needs it (aloe vera juice as gel/curl boost later when styling). Hit the “smelly spots” with a clean soap then shut down the water. Out comes the coconut oil. I start at my ankles and work up while my skin is still wet. Blot dry and I’m out.

I’m so lazy I have my Aromatherapy oils infused directly into the shower water! http://www.methven.com/nz/shower-skincare

  8. Face mask in the shower! The steam and warm water make washing it off easier, especially if I’m doing a clay / mud mask!

    Siobhan, good times!

I do the oil in the shower mostly around winter, and I always clean my face with oils, am or pm.
I do not take showers everyday and I do not use soap anywhere in my body, just some apple cider vinegar and baking soda on my pits, and I’m done >_<

Here’s my crazy time saving tip, I use Tata Harper’s face mask (love it). While I’m waiting the 20-30 min. before rinsing it off, I clean the bathroom. Cleaning the bathroom is my least favorite chore, but knowing I’m also giving myself a mini-facial at the same time makes it bearable.

I also apply oils in the shower! I apply sweet almond oil in the shower to my body and face, when I shower in the morning -its an excellent moisturizer. When I shower at night, I use lavender oil because the smell helps me sleep!

  12. Melanie says:

I also prefer to use oils in the shower, but as one poster above pointed out, the residue can be harder to remove and dangerous if you don’t have a dependable bath mat! I can’t count how many times I’ve nearly ate it thanks to baby oil….

  13. Elizabeth 2 says:

@Ellen, can you tell me more about the jojoba you swipe on before your shower? Sounds interesting, as I too have very sensitive (and acne prone skin). Is it the combination of rose water and jojoba–or will the oil alone suffice? Do you wash off in the shower with cleanser?

And weird question…I have almond oil. Not sweet almond oil, but just regular ol’ almond oil. Any ideas of what I can do with it? Thanks!

  14. Kelly says:

I’ve been doing this for years! First with baby oil before I found out how grody it was, and now with jojoba.

My trick, however, came from Bobbi Brown’s Teenage Beauty book, which I loved when I was younger: try putting the oil in a spray bottle and then misting yourself with it. Afterwards, you can pat gently or air dry.

  15. Danielle says:

I love applying oil directly after a shower too. Every so often, instead of massaging the oil directly on, while still wet, I’ll use a damp cloth, squirt the oil on & rub in. Moisturing & exfoliating at the same time! (and any dark marks that are left on the towel afterwards…dead skin!!!) Also really works wonders to spend a wee bit of time going over cuticles with the oiled cloth.

Since it takes about 20 minutes for my water to get hot, I do one time, water, and bodyheat-saving move: I take the removeable showerhead down and rinse my hair over the side of the tub while I’m fully dressed, brushing my teeth at the sink while the conditioner sits. And since I only shampoo once a week maybe, I just do a little scrub of the conditioner into my roots/scalp at the end before rinsing and putting my hair up in a t-shirt. By that time the water and surrounding air is usually warm enough for me to handle actually getting into the shower.

  17. Ellen says:

@Elizabeth 2, I use the rose water on a cotton pad every morning just as my cleanser, it’s pretty calming and I think it has antibacterial properties so it suits my skin very well (I only use a ‘proper’ cleanser in the evening).

Just before getting into the shower I apply the jojoba oil to my face, I think it acts quite simply as a kind of waterproof protective layer as I don’t get the reactive itchy red skin I’m otherwise used to from the shower. I definitely wouldn’t cleanse my face after doing this, I think it might defeat the point. By the time I’ve got out of the shower and dried off, the jojoba has sunk in. My skin seems much calmer this way, and it’s a lot quicker for me to go ahead with my moisturizer, makeup routine etc without having to wait for my skin to calm down. By the way, my skin sounds similar to yours (sensitive, acne prone).
