Your Questions Answered: If I Live Somewhere And It’s Winter; If I Do This Every Day Anyway; If I’m Not Sure If My Shampoo Is Clean Enough… Can I Still Do the Summer Hair Challenge?
So many of you have written to us or asked in the comments if the above—and other variations on the theme—disqualify them from participating in our second annual Summer Hair Challenge.
The answer to “Can I still send in my picture and be entered to win a sweet prize from Nubonau?” is….
Yes! Totally.
Come one, come all. We tweeted this yesterday but it bears repeating: The photos have started rolling in and boy are they all over the map, in the best way. All shapes and sizes are represented here—from people with enviously sleek airdried manes to full-on fros.
Deadline is Sunday. Send us your snaps, please.
P.S. To the “Is my shampoo clean enough?” question, the general answer is, “Probably?” If you’re using some kind of semi-natural or fake-natural product that you bought in good faith, or because it was the best you could afford, or because it was the only thing at your local health food store, then yes, of course you can still participate. And if you are looking for recommendations for something to buy next time you need a new shampoo or conditioner, just do a search on this site for those words—we tag liberally—or ask your fellow Dirty Lookers in the comments. Boom!

Yay!!! So I will join!
I was afraid to join because my shampoo and conditioner I bought here at a organic store is not so organic as I thought, as it still have PEG-20 and other sufates hidden with another name…¬¬”
So I had to wash my hair after four days of not washing it. Thats a pretty big deal for me. I just have to say i was super skeptical of the baking soda poo with vinegar rinse. Well HOLY (bleep) I can’t believe it!!! This combo is fabulous!!! I have super duper insanely oily hair that looks like a grease ball within 12 hours of the previous washing (with conventional product). This combo cleaned my super itchy scalp and made my hair crazy soft. I have very straight tangly hair and I didn’t even need a detangler!! Detangler is something I need everyday! I am in serious shock. I keep touching my hair and saying, “Really? Baking soda and apple cider vinegar did this?” It’s incredible and I just had to share. Maybe I don’t need the insanely expensive morocco method products after all :)
@ Lindz – wow, I have got to try this! I have a super annoying itchy scalp and while it’s much better with clean products I still have issues. You’ve inspired me to try something new – thanks!
I don’t have a horror story…. yet. And hopefully I never will. I just started using all “clean” products about two weeks ago and HOLY CRAP my hair is beautiful! It air dries natrually wavy when before it would air dry frizzy straight. But also, now when I straighten it, it seriously looks like black silk all the way down my back. My husband cant keep his hands off it and has now gone clean too! Which brings me to my question for you clean ladies: is there a clean heat protectant? I was addicted to my Chi thermal protector, but it’s got ‘cones so it went to the recycle bin. Suggestions?
** straightening my hair without a heat protectant but with clean products (only) used on it is STILL so much healthier than straightening it with all the parabens, ‘cones and sulfates in it, though!
Yay for naturally clean hair! … And did I mention that my skin glows? YES, it literally GLOWS!
I use acv.. works great. .for over a year.. less expensive, no hassle, quick showers
I have been using baking soda/acv for a week now and LOVE it! My hair is fine and very oily but now I can actually go a day without washing. My scalp is less itchy and irritated too. Best hair tip EVER.
@Brittany B. I’ve been using grapeseed oil on my sad, iron-damaged hair and so far so much better. Other oils sketch me out, but this one has a really high burning point (over 425 F I think…?) so it’s less risky/sizzly.
@amy. Thanks! I use grapeseed oil for so many wonderful things. It’s my go to overnight face oil as well as my overnight hair conditioner (that I wash out with clean shampoo the next morning). I’ve never thought to put it in my hair and use it for a heat protectant. Hmm.. I will have to try it. Even if I don’t find a protectant, I still think my hair has come a long way from what it was in just these past few weeks of going “clean”! My hair is SO shiny now that all the ‘cones have been removed. I live on an Army base and even the soldiers are noticing! Haha! I will try the grapeseed for my hair when I straighten it! Thanks (:
