365 Days’ Worth of Makeup In One Sitting—Is This “Natural Beauty” Video Making a Statement?
There’s a hot debate going on over at Jezebel about whether or not Dutch artists Lernert and Sander who shot this video—of a model being made up 365 times in one sitting, in other words with a year’s worth of makeup—were trying to make some larger point.
Some commenters feel that it’s judgey, while others think that it’s just a curiosity piece done for the heck of it.
I’m not going to pretend to know the artists’ intent on this one but I will say this: It sure makes you think about how much makeup women use over the course of a year. And when you know how much of that also gets inside your body, intended or not, I’m getting a message loud and clear. And it’s sick!
So what do you think? And do you like it?

They are lovely. There’s one where they blow-dry a chocolate rabbit into melty extinction, and that’s just one of the many great ones. I’m not sure if it’s subtitled, but there’s a mockumentary about capes from them that’s stellar. Maybe not as thought-provoking in make-up sense, but definitely with regards to fashion. Also, the videoclip about being nice and chubby is wonderful. Both funny and thought-provoking, but not judging. I think that’s the best part: almost all of their work raises a point, but in a visually stunning non-judging way.
PS. Also: colorcorrecting discosprinkles for 9 hours. There was an article in the papers on what their parents thought of the work: http://www.lernertandsander.com/index.php?/projects/how-do-i-explain-my-parents/
I love it. It’s an excellent video for showing us an example of putting on layers of makeup everyday is bad for our skin.
Great thought-provoking video. I can’t imagine how gross that model must have felt!
I think it’s silly. Eating 365 healthy meals in one sitting, or drinking 365 cups of coffee would be harmful to the body (if it were even possible). Our bodies and skin are designed to handle things in moderation.
