What’s Your Favorite Nontoxic Nail Polish?
You guys! We’re kind of losing it over how much we love these nail polishes from Scotch Naturals. As we mentioned in our Friday Deal post (scroll down! everyone needs sunscreen!), Futurenatural sells them, and so does Spirit Beauty Lounge, among others. It’s easy to find a decent three-free nail polish, but it’s not quite as easy to find one as clean as Scotch, and with such delicious appealing colors and, yes, branding. We love good branding, and these guys have completely nailed it (pun very much intended).
Scotch is layerable, so whimsical in its color options, and, well, it just kind of makes us feel like teenagers all over again.
(Except that I never once painted my nails as a teenager, being more the shaved-head-hippie-chic type back then.)
Check out their ingredients:
WaterColors: water, acrylic polymer emulsion, and non toxic colorants
Soy Polish Remover: methyl soyate, dimethyl adipate, dimethyl glutarate
Plant-based Polish Remover: water, tall oil fatty acids & alcohols (plant based), nonionic surfactant, organic buffer
And now, because it’s Friday, check out what I did the other day using Scotch:
What’s your favorite nontoxic polish these days?

I’m loving butter LONDON lately. Their Nail Foundation is amazing!
I’ve never used natural polish before. I’d like to but I’ve become pretty accustomed to the quick dry polishes by Revlon and Maybelline.
How long do these natural polishes take to dry?
I have butter london, deborah lippmann, zoya and essie. This water-based line is interesting. I tried a water-based line a long time ago and didn’t like it at all. Their soy solvent remover hardly worked and you had to rub and rub till your fingers got almost red. So my question is, in order to try this line, do you have to buy the remover? Will a regular remover do the job? And lastly, what kind of wear can I expect with the polish? Thanks in advance to whoever answers :)
I’ve used No Miss nailpolish for the last 10+ years. Back when I first got it, they were one of the only nontoxic nail polish brands around and I’ve just stuck with them all this time. Lately I’ve been noticing all the other brands popping up though!
I recently heard about priti nail polish and bought 1 .. Loving the staying power .. Was wondering if scotch is cleaner that priti?
A. you have purty hands! lol B. Thanks! I cant wait to try the coral color…
I bought my first No Miss nail polish a while ago. I love it! I have only tried it without a base and top coat, but it dried really, really quickly, and wasn’t gummy for hours like so many others. It did chip within days, but, like I said, I only did one coat. Their remover is good too, it still smells, but at least it’s not because it’s toxic.
Ha! Thanks Reese. And a super cluttered messy desk hahaha
I tried Sante… you can pass on that one! started chipping in a matter of HOURS, even with a top coat. just a waste of money.
I also want to add that the CVS brand of biodegradable nail polish remover (see link) works great, smells WAY better than the regular stuff, and doesn’t dry out your nails either. I love it. But now I wonder, how do I properly dispose of the old remover I have?
Here is the linL

I personally love Zoya (http://www.zoya.com/). It’s O.P.I.’s low-toxic nail polish brand. My favorite shade is Elise (coppery-peach). I want to try SpaRitual (http://www.sparitual.com/nail_lacquers/truth) and Shellac (http://www.cnd.com/Products/Color/shellac-intro.aspx). I’m still using 100% acetone for removal, but have been waiting to finish off my bottle so I can try (and hopefully switch to) Peacekeeper’s polish remover.
My manicurist swears by both Zoya and Shellac. She won’t use anything else in her salon.
I’ve recently started really scrutinizing my cosmetics and realizing how harmful the chemicals in most national brands are. I’ve been using the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Website to check the chemicals. http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/
I can’t find No Miss on there. Anybody who has No Miss nail polish know where I can find a list of their ingredients before I order them? I can’t find it on their website. I looked up Butter London as Jess mentioned, and they are NOT nontoxic. I was disappointed b/c they have great colors.
Anybody tried Aquarella Polish? They’re rated really well on EWG’s Skin Deep site.
I’ve been wearing Acquarella nail polishes lately–another water-based polish. You have to follow their process for preparing your nails for their polishes (buffing your nails, then conditioning them for a few days), and if you do that, they seem to work okay. Not chip-free, but not much worse than regular polish on me. I actually like their “conditioner” best, it’s really a clear polish. I think the darker colors will be good for toes come summer (less likely to chip than my fingernails). I use their nail polish remover and also Suncoat (reco’d in your book!) and like them both. Priti polish is longer lasting than Acquarella on me, but it’s less clean–not water based.
I started using Aquarella in \Smelted\ and am pretty happy with it. No stink, rated 1 on Skin Deep, and I can buy it on amazon.com for free super saver shipping.
I would love to try this one but still can’t get over the price tag..maybe an idea for next Friday’s deal? HEHE
Two things that don’t sit well with me: 1). The polish wore off me within six hours of applying it, in the shower – all 10 nails and came off in my hair. 2). That “Naturals” is in the name. Acrylic polymer emulsion ain’t natural. It’s a misnomer that this is “natural nail polish” but I do realize the ingredients are better than others that aren’t “three free” but I can’t handle a $15 price tag for polish that’s going to wash off hours after applying it :/ I do like the colors and packaging/branding though, they nailed that (pun intended) :)
Hate to break it to you folks, but Butter is so NOT nontoxic: the EWG’s Cosmetics Database has them at a solid 6 (that’s out of 9). Scotch, meanwhile, has a score between 0 and 1.
BUT
My problem with Scotch is that even when I buff all that oil in, paint correctly, etc., I get so damn excited about the gorgeous color on my nails, and then an hour or 5 later when I take my shower, I look down and…. it’s all peeling off. WTH!?!?!
I’ve used Priti and Zoya and they’re great but the smell makes me think they wouldn’t do so well on the toxicity rating.
Oh dear… I envision spending waaaayyy too much money at the Zoya website later today.
I recently stopped biting my nails, mostly by accident (I let a friend paint them black after a few drinks and a few days later I realized that I wasn’t sticking my fingers in my mouth if they were painted). Since then I’ve been trying to keep them polished (it just looks so darn pretty), but I’ve been trying to go green and I know that regular nail polish is definitely NOT green.
But the Zoya stuff looks like it comes in some amazing colors (and I like how the Wicked collection is all named after the Dancing with the Stars female dancers… lol).
so is Zoya clean or no? there are so many awesome colors
It seems showering within 6 hours isn’t recommended, I can’t say I am surprised. I love the colors of Zoya – now I just want to see if I can buy it locally! Or any other truly well-rated EWG brand! Hmmm. Gonna do some more research, thanks for the post!! It is spring and I so want to paint my fingers and toes accordingly!
I am using Acquarella or Honeybee–which rate 1 and 2 respectively on the ewg database. Ilove that they are virtually odor free.
I’ve left it on for a full 24 hours before showering as well and had the same result – still peeled and dissolved.
No Miss ingredients – NEW AND IMPROVED INGREDIENTS: Nitrocellulose-a fiber used for viscosity. Ethylacetate, N. Butyl Acetate, Isopropyl Alcohol-solvents used to dissolve Nitrocellulose. also may contain: Mica, made from sand, cosmetic titanium dioxide, (white),cosmetic iron oxide blue, (indian paint pot grey/blue), iron oxides, earth born colors made from rocks, zinc oxide, from the earth, used to promote drying and to deflect harmful UV rays from the sun.
Ethyl acetate has a 4 on the Skin Deep database, the rest score 1.
Butter London have some great colours and love the quality of this product.
I’m completely allergic to anything at all w formaldehyde and zoya has been a godsend. OPI is full of shit if they say they’re form free. Theres a derivative in the polish a few steps down from formaldehyde . It causes my eyelids to burn from the inside out about 6 hours after a manicure. I was desperate bc i love having funky nails. After trying essie and opi, the o ly thing that worked is zoya. Love the colors, you can use any remover, and the polish lasts longer than the others. Ulta carries some colors but I buy online. Have about 60 colors now bc it’s the only thing I can use. Trying butter for the first time tonight, and am very nervous after reading these responses that its not “free”. I even called butters offices to ask about ingredients. Thye assured me its ok, and I guess I’ll know in the morning if my eyes aren’t scalded with 3rd degree burns.
I have tried both Acquarella and Scotch Naturals water based nail polishes. Both are nontoxic. I prefer Acquarella, since it lasts better on my nails. With any water based polish it is best to paint your nails before bed, to allow the polish to cure over night.
@Loida- Scotch Naturals soy based remover works really well and removes Scotch Naturals polish quickly.
@Gia- Scotch Naturals is cleaner than Priti, since the main ingredient is water instead of strong chemical solvents (Butyl Acetate and Ethyl Acetate).
