Have You Read Our Book?

It’s market research time over here at No More Dirty Looks. We love this blog, and it makes us really happy to see that our readership here keeps growing (oh, and P.S., we are getting GREAT no soap stories). But here’s what we’re wondering: How did you get here? Have you read the book or did you stumble on the site through other channels?

And if you haven’t read the book (or didn’t realize it existed), you should know that it features all of our favorite products and DIY recommendations. We get a lot of emails, Facebook messages and tweets asking us what products we love… it’s all in there! Of course, any exciting discoveries we’ve made since eventually get posted about here.

One last thing: If you have read the book, we’d love to get more reviews going on Amazon. If you have a little time today to share your comments there, we’d be ohhhhhh-so-grateful.

I finally have the book now and I’m halfway through. I’ve been devouring each word like a delicate morsel. It’s the book I’ve been waiting for, I love it! Love the information, light and conversational tone. Also loving how it has home DIY to try AND a plethora of safe product recommendations.

I’ll provide a review on Amazon tonight!

I found this blog through a Good article I saw Re-Tweeted. I’ve been a dedicated reader since I found it and finally obtained the book last week. I’m definitely going to continue recommending the book to friends, family, my readers, etc. Every chemical product devotee needs to read it!

  2. Jennifer says:

I read the book and then found you on Facebook. The book was great (I’ve actually read it twice now)! Easy to read, fun, informative. I keep your book near my computer so I can reference it when I sit down to look for a new lotion, cream, makeup, etc.

  3. Wendy says:

I read your book and then found this site. I love both. Since reading the book and then checking out the ratings of my cosmetics on EWG’s Cosmetic Database, I’ve traded in almost all my makeup, shampoo and lotions for earth and healty friendly products. Keep up the great work!

  4. Beka says:

I first heard about you guys through a Good article that was posted on MSN (the one about the secret ingredients in everything). From there I made my way to your website, and then heard about the book, which I bought and read and absolutely love!

  5. Abbey says:

I read your book and then searched out this site. I learned about the book when Siobhan appeared on The Kathleen Show and I ran right out and bought it. I’d gone green/clean with my cosmetics several years ago but had slowly and almost completely drifted away from it. It really easy to do when life gets busy and your focus/resolve can just drift away. Your book inspired me to get back to it. I love the blog as well to keep me current and to see what other people are saying. Thanks for doing what you do!

  6. Merry says:

I actually found the book at my local library a month ago. I checked it out with a few other books on skincare (my face was breaking out more than it ever had in high school and I was desperate for ideas!) and it was definitely an eye-opener. your recommendations along with blogs like fig+sage and feelgoodstyle have really helped me stumble across some great products! trying to find some in my college-kid, part time minimum wage job and drugstore product price range is a little tough but I’m getting lots of good ideas!

oh, and as for the other books… I skipped to the end of one for their product rec’s and saw cetaphil and said oh hale no and returned them.

  7. erica says:

I read your book and instantly a fan! I carried the book in my purse for like a month in case I was in a store I could look up your product recommendations. In fact, I was in a natural store today and was bummed I didn’t have it in my purse because I couldn’t remember if you recommeneded a certain brand I was checking out. Thanks for all the research and info!

  8. Sarah says:

I found the blog first (I think via GOOD via NYT via Twitter…thanks Internet) and then immediately rushed out to buy and read the book. “Going dirty” and “Using Clean” were already things I tried to practice, but this motivated to clean up my dirty act completely…or something like that.

  9. J. Smith says:

I came across the two of you listening to the Dr channel on XM Radio and then purchased the book. I have spread my knowledge of your book and website to many others I work with and family. Glad you guys wrote this book, as its easy for the hard to think it was worth caring person to finally start considering making lifetime changes.

  10. Lisa says:

I think I found yOu guys through the EWG. I got my book on Monday, started to read it yesterday and I can’t put it down! I love all the valuable information! Thanks so much! Will review at Amazon tonight!

  11. Alexandra says:

Thank you everyone for letting us know! This is our first book (and our first blog) so getting this input helps us understand the whole process better.

  12. I came here through a different website (I think it was GOOD.is) and have stuck around ever since. I live in Switzerland now so I don’t get too many English books, but I’m thinking I’ll need to start getting books sent to me online, like your book and Crazy Sexy Diet by Kris Carr. Gah! I miss having a great English library so close to home.

  13. Emily says:

I found you through another blog. Unfortunately, I can’t recall which one exactly. Haven’t had a chance to read your book yet, but look forward to getting my hands on it!

  14. Aileen says:

I found your blog when you did a guest post on another blog I read. I had tried to “green” my products last year, but I slipped a bit when I got frustrated with trying to find worthwhile products. I read your book pretty much the same day it arrived and I loved it! I had read other books in the same wein about chemicals in cosmetics, but the information in yours was more practically useful. I have since followed some of your recommendations and have yet to be disappointed. Thank you!!

  15. Nancy says:

I found your blog after Googling Tata Harper after reading about her in Vogue. I read one blog post and immediately ordered the book. The book is fabulous (and as a professional editor, I don’t say that very often!). Thanks for getting the word out on these scary chemicals!

  16. Rachael says:

I’ve read the book. Saw it at the bookstore once and decided to have a look. And I loved it of course! I think I saw your site first, then the book. But still, the book is great! Very informative. As well as your blog, and I love that you post often!

  17. Marie A. says:

I found your blog via a post on someone else’s blog, but I haven’t read the book (Yet!) It’s on my amazon kindle wish list, still trying to finish the ones I’m reading now before I buy more.

  18. Angie says:

I saw the Today Show interview…actually I just saw the promo for your interview coming and I googled your book and wala! So I was reading your blog and watching your interview at the same time. LOL!

Been following your blog ever since.
    Got the book for Christmas.

(I never watch the Today Show…hubby turned it on that channel to watch something and I just never changed it or turned it off.)

I just passed your book to my dear friend who needs to be set free! She is a sucker for every marketing gobbledee gook out there when it comes to beauty products.

  19. Genny says:

I got a subscription to GOOD and the first one I got was on New Orleans which had the little article about the book, so I googled you and came to this!

I haven’t read the book yet, but I do plan on buying it!

  20. Read the book because I heard you gals on NPR!

  21. connie curtis says:

I read the book which is wonderful. i talk about it and educate people around dirty products. I look for clean and gluten free products which is getting easier to find. I won a copy of the book and gave it to a friend.

I think personal products, food, etc it all needs to change and we the consumers are the ones to stand up with our money and say change. I put my money where my mouth is. I do have a question to moisturer for my face . I am using coconut but my face is still dry. I have heard that flax seed is great . what would you recommend. I love the coconut but havent been using everyday so I wondered if that was the problem. I have been using yorgut with oatmeal as a cleanser and using the coconut first and then after the yorgut. Any suggestions

  22. I love your book! Still find myself flicking back and forth through it to check on ingredients and recommendations. Have already recommended it to a few people who are keen on reading it as well.
I first came across your blog (through another blog I think it was) and that’s what prompted me to order your book.

  23. Martha says:

I have read the book twice and give it to two of my friends. I have also photocopied the list of Blacklisted Ingredients and carry a laminated copy in my purse. Because I’m crazy like that.

  24. Julie says:

I stumbled across this blog, and then had to run out and buy the book ASAP! You guys are awesome!

  25. Avalon says:

I have definitely read the book and now so has my mom, aunt, and friend! The blog is great, but it is really nice to have the detailed information and product recommendations you provide all in one place. Your book changed how I look at my whole life. It has made me more aware of my options as a consumer and made me feel empowered to make healthier choices all around. Thank you!

  26. Jill says:

If I remember correctly, I found you through Treehugger when there was a piece on your book. I bought the book-LOVED IT!- and then noticed the blog reference and made my way here :o) I’ve been a daily follower ever since. I have since lent the book to a couple friends and introduced them to EWG website as well (which I also love) and have revamped the products in our house. This site is fabulous for product information from people who have tried and continue! to use various products. I gather a good portion of us are newbies to natural products (like me) and don’t know what is a good product and what is not-so-good, so the gleening of advice is huge for me. Thanks so much for all your time and investigative know how! You go girl(s)!!! :o)

good.is blog on facebook {to} your blog {to} your book. i am a daily blog reader and *love* your book. the information that you make available and understandable is truly changing my life. thank you…

I read the book first and loved it. It is my indispensable guide for all things beauty. I’ve given it as a gift to several friends, After the book, I found the blog, which is equally terrific. I think you guys are amazing – you provide such an important counterpoint to the creepy beauty industry. I don’t remember precisely WHERE I first read about your book, but I’m thinking it might have been on Kris Karr’s Crazy Sexy Life blog – and I found her after a scary bout of mystery illness that lasted several months early last year. Since then, I try to be as clean as I can be, avoiding every toxin and chemical no-no that I can. So – organic food, pure, natural beauty products, and daily focus on my physical and spiritual health – these simple, yet profound changes have turned my health, and my life, around.
I shower with H2O only, using a teeny bit of organic soap for those areas, and shampoo/condition with organic products. The whole showering/bathing/shampooing routine has gone from daily to once a week, except for rinsing off after exercise. Coconut oil is my only facial cleanser, moisturizer, and underarm deodorant. I’m not greasy, dry, smelly, or unattractive. So thank you so much – for the book, the blog, the ongoing research, and the humor!

I found (luckily!) your blog after searching reviews on Tata Harper after watching video about her on Vogue Italy. I loved your blog very much and ordered a book the same day. Although I was on a green side even before reading your book and blog (I am from Europe and everything green is rather popular here), it came as a great reminder of already well known things and also brought something new. Love your style and enthusiasm! Please continue blogging and sharing this useful and interesting information. Wish you stay as simple, independent and non-commercial in the future.

Well… I was actually with Genny (post above) looking through her GOOD magazine. We’d been talking about face creams and protecting our skin from the sun, etc., as it was August. I recommended whole heartedly the brand I’d been attached to for YEARS and many many dollars later from a cosmetics counter in the mall. I glanced over the GOOD article and was pumped to prove to Genny that my face washes and creams and make ups were sure to make the list. They didn’t. Not one of them. Which initially infuriated me because the company’s marketing would make you believe otherwise. Very white, very “clean”, very “natural beauty.”
I have since switched all of my face washes and moisturizes, threw out (literally) my shampoo and conditioner faster than you can imagine (I couldn’t even bear offering them to someone else after reading the chapter and looking at the ingredients list). I still use the cosmetic company’s make-up, but that is bound to change someday.
I loved the book. I took it to Whole Foods with me as my reference. Love the blog too.
On the first night I washed my face with baking soda and honey, I texted Genny because I sort of had the giggles from trying it out. Her text back? “Love it. Do it all the time!” Enough said.
So happy and so confident with my knowledge in beauty products. I now flip right over the ads for any “beauty products” and sort of shake my head silently. I’m excited your message is spreading. I can see the BS from a mile away!
Living in France. Not sure how I will be replacing my favorite Aubrey’s lotions, etc. We shall see…
My sister has the book with her at the university. I’m going to get another copy for myself because I find myself wanting it as my current products get low.
You do write that French consumers are more protected concerning costmetics, but so far, as I’ve glanced at the tiny print on products in pharmacies and super markets, I have yet to find anything close to suitable!

I found this site when hellodollface.com did a month long piece on clean beauty, and mentioned The Book. Growing up in a classic NorCal bohemian family, it immediately made perfect sense to me. I hurriedly purchased the book on Amazon, and like a previous poster wrote, carried it around with me until I basically had it memorized. I’m fortunate to live where much of the products mentioned can be bought in person (hello Clary Sage!!), and I have done my fair share of stimulating the economy with my crossover to truly clean products. I feel better, look better and am a walking talking advertisement for your book & lifestyle. Thanks so much for all the hard work, and congrats to success well deserved!!

This book is brilliant and incredibly helpful. Thanks to evanhealy’s blog, (her products changed my life), I read about this book and could not wait to read it. It is packed with invaluable information–everyone should be reading it!

  34. reese says:

Found you online through the green guide, started reading the blog- loved it, checked the book out from the library, loved it- been following ever since. plan to buy copies of the book this year!

  35. Therese says:

I found your blog thru the L.A .Times and found the book at my local Borders. Try to by at stores to keep the jobs here. Thanks for the reminder to write a review. I will do that this weekend on Amazon and Borders. I have spread the word to all of my friends. I love all the suggestions and the info. A million thanks.

  36. Adri says:

I think I found this site through the (now sadly defunct) lemondrop.com. Your book was my first download on the Kindle I got for Christmas. Thanks so much for it, it’s great to have the information so clearly laid out and I love that you recommend products!

  37. Trudi says:

I believe I found the book as a recommendation from EWG and subsequently purchased it from Amazon. Through the book is how I found your blog and Facebook group.

  38. Autumn says:

I found this blog via Beauty Schooled (http://beautyschooledproject.com/) while gathering research for my own beauty blog, The Beheld (which isn’t product-oriented, more theoretical/essay-oriented, featuring interviews with women whose professions lend them a unique perspective on beauty). Your blog now shows up on my RSS feed and Twitter, and I find individual posts through both those means equally.

I haven’t read the book but plan to so that I can endorse it wholeheartedly (which I’m sure I’ll be able to but obviously I want to be educated on it) when I get around to putting up a resources section on my own blog.

  39. Whitney says:

I love the book. Thanks for putting forth the effort and doing the research to find safe alternatives.

  40. Meghan says:

Hey guys! I was referred to your site by a friend. I’ve been your fan on facebook for a few months now and I finally ordered your book about a week ago. I read pretty much the whole thing in one day! I’ve been slowly switching over to natural products for a few years or so, but I was appalled to read about some of the things that are permissible to use in cosmetics. Keep up the great work!

  41. Lindsay says:

I think I found you through a local beauty blogger (Beauty Bets) and I’m in the middle of reading your book AND swapping out the junk. I wish I could go back in time and give my teenage self argan oil. Sigh. I just purchased a jumbo bottle of Josie’s stuff. Also transitioning to clean shampoo. I can’t wait! I’ve got 2 friends interested in reading the book and I’m going to make my mom read it, too.

I have lots of questions on what you recommend for certian items, do you prefer questions on the blog or twitter or elsewhere?
