We did the Brazilian Blowout! Do You Have a Story? [UPDATE]
UPDATE: We now have a LOT of responses to this and wanted to bump it up to share the comments with you guys. You can probably skip to the comments if you read this site with any frequency. It’s really all about you, the readers, with this puppy. So read! And add!
Hello! Let’s have a little fun, since we know we are not the only ones who have gone down the Brazilian blowout road. As the bad press continues, we want to hear your Brazilian blowout stories:
1. Did you do it at home or in a salon?
2. Did your eyes hurt/nose bleed/hair smell funny? Or did nothing bad happen?
3. What was it called: keratin styling, old standby “Brazilian” or something else?
4. Did you do it again? (Do you still do it?) Did your hair get dry and weird two months later, as ours did?
For those of you who have not read the book or listened to us talk about this ad nauseam, a recap: We wrote the book because we went for Brazilian blowouts, had a sort of scary experience—much coughing, protective goggles, and hair that smelled like toxic chocolate for way, way too long—and decided we should investigate what was in it. We also noticed that after a few weeks, our hair looked like garbage, and it was a long time before it went back to normal.
But right after we did it? Boy were we excited. The pic of me up top is from right after the treatment: I look grumpy, but not because of my hair. That’s what my hair looked like without a blowdryer for a while, in the August humidity. Swoon! Except not really. That’s Alexandra’s hair about a month or so in—and the magic of the blowout was already beginning to reverse itself (you should see the pictures she took at two months).
Anyway, we want to hear your experiences. Please answer our questions in the comments section (or tell us a different story about it) and if, like us weirdos, you saved your post-Brazilian pics send them to us at nomoredirtylooks (at) gmail (dot) com.

2. Did your eyes hurt/nose bleed/hair smell funny? Or did nothing bad happen?
I didn’t have a bad reaction. It didn’t smell nearly as noxious as this other treatment I once had, so I was mostly relieved.
3. What was it called: keratin styling, old standby “Brazilian” or something else?
Keratin Complex.
4. Did you do it again? (Do you still do it?) Did your hair get dry and weird two months later, as ours did?
Nope. It did start to dry out, but then I started using gentler products and I’ve learned to work with my hair, instead of against it.

Salon
2. Did your eyes hurt/nose bleed/hair smell funny? Or did nothing bad happen?
When it was being done my hair smelled funny and my eyes watered a little.
3. What was it called: keratin styling, old standby “Brazilian” or something else?
I’ve done the “Keratin treatment” and the “Brazilian Blowout” – both had similar results although with the Brazilian I could wash my hair right away (versus waiting 3 days with the Keratin).
4. Did you do it again? (Do you still do it?) Did your hair get dry and weird two months later, as ours did?
I’ve done it 3 times now. My hair is actually healthier than ever and for the first time in years I have been able to grow it out, mainly because I don’t spend as much time blow-drying and straight ironing.
My story is that I’ve never done it, (because I have generally bad hair and don’t consider it worth the money or the effort). However, you fine ladies have prevented me from ever considering it, so many thanks.
I’m still don’t understand – what exactly is this blowout? Permanent straightening, like some women would get curly perms back in the day? Wouldn’t a high quality, daily smoother do the trick?
It’s always the same old story – women with straight hair want curly, women with curly hair want straight! I sat through many, nasty, smelly perms when I was a teenager….as I get older, I find the LESS I do to my hair, the BETTER it looks and behaves.
I completely agree with you Debbie. I think I was in my mid-twenties, (right after having my first child), when I decided to let my hair rule instead of trying to conquer it and get it to do what it didn’t want to do. It is thin and as straight as a pin, but it is healthy and shiny.
I sat through many a difficult perm as a young child, as my mother wanted a child who looked like Shirley Temple instead of Pocohantas. Those perms caused the same side effects that are described above, tearing, just horrible smells, burning, itching scalp. These perms also stripped the color and shine right out of my hair.
Shudder!
Anyway, none of it could have been good.
So, just to clarify ladies: the Brazilian blowout is a chemical treatment that gets flat-ironed onto the hair. For the first month or two it makes your hair completely frizz-free thanks to the active ingredient it uses… formaldehyde! I also agree with you ladies—aside from the occasional normal blowout for fun, I pretty much let my hair be who it is these days.
Is there only 1 specific “Brazilian blowout”?? Where is the information that is uses formaldehyde?? I’ve heard it smooths the hair through the use of a proprietary polymer system that bonds amino acids to the surface of the hair. What makes it effective is our use of the Super Nutrient Complex in conjunction with a proprietary polymer system. This combination is what rounds the follicle, smooths the cuticle and repairs any preexisting damage.
Did you use the shampoo, conditioner, masque, shine spray…etc solely after your Blowout??
There is a “smear campaign” against Brazilian Blowout. They are currently working with OSHA to have their statement retracted. the samples tested were non-descript with the word Brazilian blowout written on the pack with a sharpie….
A perm burns your eyes, makes your nose run, can leave with a rash on your forehead or neck…
There is no formaldehyde in Brazilian Blowout!
From our email account (I can feel her pain):
I just read your blog. I too am a victim of the Brazilian Blowout treatment. I had it done September 9 2010 & already I had to cut 2 inches off of my hair!!
The hairdresser PROMISED that there are no chemicals whatsoever in the treatment & he also promised me that I would not have to cut off my hair as a result. In fact he promised that my hair would be in the BEST condition ever. $500 later & what a HUGE regret. I want to shoot myself….I’m soooo upset!
I have had about 5 treatments in a salon over the last year and a half. The first time was amazing and my frizz head was looking good and calm. I noticed sometime in the 3rd month after getting it done, my hair became completely frazzled and I had to run for another treatment. I think by the 3rd one, my hair didn’t take anymore. My eyes burned doing the treatment but not after.
The last 2 times I got a treatment, my scalp itched so bad that I complained to my hairdresser. I definitely will not get anymore treatments done. I know that the cost is steep, but the side effect of the itchy scalp is what really scared me off.
Mom of 1, you are an obvious shill for a Brazilian Blowout retail, but I’ll tell you that a “proprietary polymer” might well contain formaldehyde. You can polymerize formaldehyde, you know.
Mom of 1, please actually read the LA Times article:
” . . . Montgomery [a certified industrial hygienist and occupational health and safety inspector ] herself picked up opened bottles from Portland area salons and delivered them to the Department of Consumer and Business Services’ Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division to be chemically analyzed. They tested two formulations, including the Brazilian Blowout Acai Professional Smoothing Solution labeled “formaldehyde free.” Using four test methods, researchers say they found the products to contain 10.6%, 6.3%, 10.6% and 10.4% formaldehyde.
So, I did have one but it was quite a while back… I was still in school, and the stylist told me it would end my sorrows…
I was 16.
Since it was so long ago, I do not have pictures.
I remember my head being extremely itchy for a week, and my hair went back to normal in 3 weeks… It was a painful, itchy, unnecessary experience. Money wasted. Never did it again.
I just had the “Brazilian Blowout” done last week… my stylist also told me “I’d never do anything to you that would cause you harm or be bad for you. This is the BEST treatment to strengthen the hair making it shinier, healthier, and completely frizz free.” I went through with it and I left completely satisfied! HOWEVER, 2 washes later using the “Brazilian Blowout” shampoo and conditioner my scalp became totally itchy and painful. I have now washed it 4 times and discontinued the use of the “brazilian” brand and am now using Pureology- my scalp feels way better BUT now I am noticing a ton of breakage at the top only. Heed my warning- this is an AWFUL product!!! Any company that will not reveal their ingredients and that are NOT FDA approved must be interpreted as a BAD THING and after this first week that’s all it’s been for me a NIGHTMARE! Hope I don’t lose my hair…DON”T do this girls!
WOW! you ladies have certainly been victims of bad hairdressers but not the brazillian blowout itself. Osha has retracted their statement about the blowout containing formaldehyde and has apologized for the faulty testing they performed. The brazilian blowout is not a chemically altering performance like a perm or straightener. It never penetrates the hair cuticle or breaks down the sulpher bonds like perms/ straigheners and other chemical services. It remains on the outside of the cuticle and therefore washes out. If you are using your after care products the service should last more than 4 weeks (12 infact) However, everyone is unique and some will have better results on the second treatment. Your stylist may not have done the proper prep work to garuntee an ideal outcome. As far as damage goes, the flat iron used in the blowout is recommended to be 450 degrees. If a person has less than ideal hair condition using a 450 degree flat iron may not be the best idea and may cause damage.(bad call by the stylist) Just a little note to those still concerned with the chemical in the blowout. Hair color does penetrate the cuticle and most colorlines contain ammonia. This is a cancer causing agent. Those of you who color in salons are putting ammonia directly on your scalp. All of the sudden the formaldehyde free blowout really doesnt seem that bad.
I am totally disappointed and want my money back. Not only is my hair not one ounce straighter than before but I experience burning eyes while getting the treatment which really scares me. I still have to round brush my hair to get it straight – not one day of straight hair! It feels a little bit softer in places but i have experienced breakage in places too.
To answer your questions above:
I got mine done in a salon.
My eyes burned and my hair smelled and my scalp burned while in the salon, but not after.
It was called “Brazilian”
I would never get it again and am telling all my friends not to get it.
My eyes watered while I got it done, not the end of the world. It is a smoothing treatment, not a straightening miracle. For the first week, my hair dried in 9 minutes instead of 45 and was I incredibly straight and shiny (normally super thick and very wavy). That said, 4 weeks later my hair is still shinier and smoother but it hasn’t worked as well as I expected. At this rate of washout, I imagine in just 4 more weeks my hair will be completely back to normal. I also colored it yesterday which may affect it. I haven’t decided if I will do it again. Pretty expensive for not being a miracle…
I had it done. My hair is less frizzy, but after 2 weeks got a little more frizzy. It is easier to brush, but you know whay? Now my scalp is super itchy everyday. I don’t know what to do. It worries me about the formaldehyde as well. I had no idea! All I can say, is there is something wrong with my scalp. I am going to try head and shoulders to help. I hope there is not something seriously wrong now. It has been a month and a half and my head itches daily all throughout the day.
Nancy, I had the BB approx 2 mos ago & I experienced eye tearing (similar to when one peels an onion), as well as slight burning & itching to the scalp for 2 days after. My hair is definitely smoother, but I would not try this product again. I will cease using BB shampoo & conditioners and will use other safer products on my hair. I did not see ANYWHERE that OSHA released a statement withdrawing its claim that BB contains formaldehyde. Please provide a link. As of this date (10/15/10), the US Feds are investigating the product, and the Canadian govt has put a ban on salons selling it. I wish it weren’t true, because I’m nervous that I’ve had exposure to yet one more carcinogen on this planet. And btw, using the excuse that other hair products are toxic, doesn’t make your product good!

Salon
2. Did your eyes hurt/nose bleed/hair smell funny? Or did nothing bad happen?
OMG. yes. during the treatment my eyes stung and I cried. The hair dresser said it was “normal” its the fumes, the chemicals reacting. I sat there thinking, this can’t be good for me, my hair, my health. Ahh the things we do for awesome hair. Of course, i sat through the whole thing.
3. What was it called: keratin styling, old standby “Brazilian” or something else?
I had both Brazillian Blowout with Keratin and the Brazillian Blowout. My hair is thick and course and wavy. The BBK was just an expensive deep conditioner in my opinion. The BB was wonderful. it’s been 5 weeks and my curl is coming back but no frizz.
4. Did you do it again? (Do you still do it?) Did your hair get dry and weird two months later, as ours did?
Well. The BBKeratin did not spew fumes but the BB did. If i was sure it was safe and does not make my scalp itch like crazy, then yes.
I bought the shampoo and products. Anyone using their products and finding that your hair stinks like you haven’t washed it for weeks even though you’ve just done towelling it dry?
had a BB done on the 23/10.
Highway freaking robbery.i must admit my hair is softer, but my word, unmanagable.
washed my hair, supposed to half my time in drying it, well……….is 2 hours halving it??
OSHA did NOT retract their statement (hairbrained.me). Oct 29th they reiterated the dangers of Brazilian Blowout, and they put out a request to all who have had ANY problems with ANY brand of keratin treatments to contact them. Brazilian Blowout, according to an industry website, is pulling their product and reformulating. OSHA has also put a request out to ANY ONE who has had ANY issues with ANY keratin product, and the FDA is getting interested, or involved. Also, Aveda has sent a letter out to all salons carrying their products, strongly suggesting that they refrain from using and keratin treatment due to the formaldehyde and possibility of toxins. On the Oprah message boards, there are over 70 people who have posted that they went to a certified keratin specialist, it did not touch their scalp, they followed the aftercare instructions, were in good health, no new meds or new stress, had normal bloodwork.. and are losing their hair in handsfulls with bald patches after the keratin treatment., along with severely breaking hair. This is with many different brands mostly US, one Italy , a few UK, many Canada. Also, there is a class action suit in Canada against Brazilian Blowout.
Formaldehyde, anyone? I’ll wait til I”m getting embalmed!
1. Did you do it at home or in a salon?
A Salon–after I researched both the BB and BKT. I chose the BB and did have my reservations. Why? The only other time I tried to straighten my hair chemically was in the 70s…the first and last time I did that! The process made me look like a cavewoman! However, after reading about the BB I thought it might be worth taking the straightening plunge once again, with my fingers crossed!
2. Did your eyes hurt/nose bleed/hair smell funny? Or did nothing bad happen?
I did not notice any smell at all nor was my breathing affected. I’ve had the BB done twice now. The second time it did slightly burn and my eyes stung a little, but it certainly wasn’t unbearable.
3. What was it called: keratin styling, old standby “Brazilian” or something else?
Brazilian Blowout (BB)
4. Did you do it again? (Do you still do it?) Did your hair get dry and weird two months later, as ours did?
I had my second treatment done last week. No, my hair did not get dry or weird two months later, in fact, it was very nice for over 12 weeks the first time I had it done. The curl eventually started coming back in the underneath layers of my hair as did a wee touch of frizz…that’s when I knew I needed a second treatment. The second BB left my hair much healthier looking than the first, which I believe is typical. They do say that your hair gets better the more treatments you receive.
Other comments: No cavewoman hair here…the BB was wonderful! Whenever I received my first BB, my hair was longer (down to the middle of my back). Since then I had it trimmed to about 3 inches below my shoulders. The shorter style works better and is much more sassy after having my second BB. I paid $200 for it (which I think is a fair price for the time it saves me) and do use the Acai products. I did try a less expensive name-brand sulfate free product only once and it made my BB look dingy, so I do stick with Acai. I use only a small amount of the products to make them last longer and this hasn’t been a problem…my hair gets clean and always looks great. I also use large and medium hot rollers in my BB to add in some body and a little curl only on the ends…this works beautifully! Personally for me, I love the BB and will continue to use this service. Everyone is different. What works well for one may not work well for another.
Formaldehyde. Hummm…this is a naturally occuring substance in the environment. It also can be found in automobile exhaust, tobacco smoke, forest fires, etc. If formaldehyde is an ingredient in the BB (even though they claim it is free of it), I’ve been exposed to this chemical (and many others, as have we all) all my life, anyway. :/ And the FDA…take a good look at their track record…

WIll I do it again? NEVER!! I’m losing my hair and if it doesnt stop i fear i ill look bald…
Check out Hair Loss, Irritation Blamed on Popular Hair Product | NBC Chicago I was able to tell my story along with a friend of mine who is a salon owner! this is no joke and I hope people will discontinue this product…
cappy, that is kinda sad… (last paragraph) Why not always strive for better?
I actually had the same treatment done in Brazil, where it’s called ‘escova progressiva’ (roughly translated, ‘gradual/progressive straightening’) and is very common. I had it done twice, about three months apart. I had no ill effects, and it just sort of faded away, my hair going back to its naturally wavier texture over time. The only difference I noticed was that my hair afterwards was a bit greasier than it used to be (I used to tend toward having dry hair if anything). When I was living there I actually had no idea that a similar treatment had become popular in the states – it’s possible the formula is different, I suppose.
I had a natural spiral curl that was very frizzy and extremely hard to manage. 6 months ago I tried the NV Keratin treatment. Loved it! My hair was very easy to handle, the curl was still present without the frizz. So it was growing longer and the frizz was back on the new growth. I was talked into the Brazilian Blowout by the salon. Saying it would be much better for my type of hair. I had it done a few days ago. I did not notice the smell or burning of the scalp. But now my hair is completely limp. My curl is gone. There is no body to it. It costs me $450 and I regret it. It looks awful.
I just wanted to say I absolutely love the Brazilian Blowout. It did burn my eyes and was a little hard to breath with the process. But, nothing I couldn’t handle. I am a little worried about the formaldehyde in it as I am a very healthy person. I am definately thinking of not getting it again due to the OHSU postings. The BB lasted up to 4 months on my hair, I had no breakage, and my hair was soft and didn’t bind up from being dry. I LOVE this product. I also used the products and it did extend the BB in my hair. The price was right for me… Please tell me it will be safe for future use. I want it back!!
I have done Brazilian Blowout. Now my hair looks amazing. I love it.
1. Did you do it at home or in a salon? Salon
2. Did your eyes hurt/nose bleed/hair smell funny? Or did nothing bad happen? No
3. What was it called: keratin styling, old standby “Brazilian” or something else? Brazilian Blowout
4. Did you do it again? (Do you still do it?) Did your hair get dry and weird two months later, as ours did? I didn’t take for me at all. I’m currently scheduled for a redo in a week or so, but not sure I’m going to do it. My hair seems to be in worse condition than before. I now have tons of breakage!! When I pull my hair back I have a halo of frizz, especially after I work out. Not happy.
I did the Brazilian blowout today in the salon. The bottle is light brown and it says No formaldehyde.
However my eyes and my throat burned during the process. I went to the websites when I came home. I realize that Brazilian Blowout must have some form of formaldehyde that is cancerous. I regret I exposed myself to chemicals and will not do it again in spite of my hair looking nice and straight. My throat still burns some after 6 hours of BB.
Ive had the BB and the thermal straightening. The BB is awesome. It is not as expensive nor does it cause the breakage that the thermal does. I can also highlight my hair which i could not do with thermal.
There was no bad smell and my eyes burned for about 30 secs ,if that. The hair must also be properly prepped . It should be washed with a clarifying shampoo, formula applied in even sections, blown dry, flat ironed, masque treatment, rinsed and then redry. YOU need to go to a trusted salon that stands by their work. I didn’t just pick mine from nowhere. Ive been going there for years and before that I talked to people that had been there and got feedback. You also should have a consult prior.
My hair is shiny and silky and yes I will do it over and over. It frees up my time. So what if its got formaldihide ? I am an informed consumer and in the medical field. I know its not good for me. Cigarettes aren’t either. I have made the informed decision not to smoke them. I’m an adult and can make the informed decision to put whatever I choose on my hair.
I did the Brazilian blowout at home, it did have a toxic smell. I have really course curly hair and grew up with my mother experimenting with different treatments for my hair. I was often made fun of because it was extremely unruly. I feel like I could easily be a cosmetologist with the experience I’ve had trying to tame my hair, so I thought I was pretty informed before I tried the treatment. The first time I did it, I had awesome results, After about two months my hair started to become incredibly frizzy again. I thought the treatment had worn off, so I did it again. This time the awesome results lasted for barely a month before the frizz returned even worse than before I started. The worst side affect of the treatment I didn’t even notice until a co-worker asked if I’d had a haircut. Before the treatment I had fairly long hair, and now after the treatments I’ve lost at least 7 inches of hair length. I had to look back at pictures from Christmas to notice how much shorter my hair is. Also it’s frizzy all the time now, but I’m too scared to do another treatment. I’m still using the special shampoo/conditioner. I wonder if I switched, that might help to repair some of the damage or if I have to wait for it all to grow out. It’s worse than it’s ever been. I’m stuck in ponytail hell. It’ll take at least a year for that amount of hair to grow out, and I never heard anyone mention that it can cause so much breakage and split ends.
I agree totally with Jennifer Flynn. Her experience is right on. I’ve done it about 50+ times.
You guys are all alarmist’s and might wanna think about getting a life or a hobby….maybe pop out some more kids to get your mind off being ridiculous. It burns the eyes a little but so do onions when you cut them. The Brazilian Blowout is harmless. Relaxers are waaay worse and people still do them! (ammonium thioglocolate) Watch the movie “good hair” , seriously. The BB is the best thing to happen to the hair industry since Jennifer Anistons “friends” haircut in the 90’s. It saves me time and has given me the hair I always wanted….it’s too bad it didn’t come out 15 years ago. For all of you alarmist and Brazilian Blowout haters. I believe you are uneducated on the treatment and you need to get your facts straight before running your mouths. You’re probably just cheap and pissed that it cost so much or something, because it doesn’t sound to me like you’ve gotten the real thing or had it done correctly, Because if you had you would love it like the rest of us.
- I’m a pretty known hair stylist in Boca Raton Fl, And I use the Natura Organic Hair Treatment System. I think it’s absolutely the best in the market. It leaves outstanding results and even after the treatment has washed away it will leave your hair in a way healthier condition then it was before. Not to mention its certified organic by the FDA. Its best to do the treatment within 72 hours of dying your hair because the product can more deeply penetrate the hair cuticle. You start off by deeply washing the hair with the Natura Clarifying Shampoo to remove all the natural residues from the hair. Then, you towel dry the hair so that is 70% dry leaving it damp, and apply the Natura Organic Keratin Treatment to the damp hair a half inch from the scalp. Leave it in for 15 min, Blow dry 100% dry with medium heat not high so you don’t seal the product before ironing, Then you proceed to flat iron the hair at 450 degrees Fahrenheit in order to seal the keratin onto the hair, with a 48 hour period your client should refrain from any hair restraints what so ever, and should also wait to wash the hair for a period of 72 hours.
I had a Brazilian Blowout in a salon 10 days ago. I love it so far. It is shiny and frizz-free. It takes me minutes to dry. It is straight and smooth. I really like it. I got it because I want to grow out bangs that I should never have had cut. I have curly hair, and bangs don’t work with curly hair. So I decided to get the blow out while they grow. I think I may get it again. I do notice a smell though. If I sweat, my hair smells fishy.
I’ve been using the special Keratin shampoo and conditioner and it keeps my hair conditioned. Almost too conditioned. It also may be making the nape of my hair itch — but that is not a huge deal. I decided to use my own shampoo today, just to get a little bit of body back. It looked like it had a bit more body today. No itch. I sweat while working out, and my hair dried straight with no blow dry. You could say that is amazing. Only ten days in though.
The blowout really straightened my hair. I am satisfied. I might do it once more while my bangs are growing out.
I had the “temporary” (lasted me 2 months) Marcia Teixeira Brazilian Hair Straightening Treatments done and at first I loved it and my hair was thicker looking and shiny, but after the third time i had it done, my hair is limp and looks the worst it has ever looked and I have alot of breakage and it is very dry (it feels like straw now). I had very healthy, big spiral curls and used to get so many compliments on my natural curls, and I wish i never had it done now. I think it will take a good year or two at least to get my hair back to what it used to be. i will never get this done again.
I had the Juvexin Brazilian Blowout at the salon. My eyes burned at first so I just kept them shut the whole time. The initial results were awesome, but it washed out after nine days. The salon redid it for free and said that they had to use more product and leave it in longer due to how coarse, thick, and curly my hair was. Once again, the initial results were fantastic. However, after my second wash about 2 weeks after the blowout, my hair was a frizz basket. I used the Pureology shampoo and conditioner recommended by the salon. Maybe that was the problem.
Ive had about six treatments. Love it. It does burn a bit on my scalp when she applys it. My hair stylist is the bomb and knows what she is doing thankfully. She shampoos my hair with the brazilian shampoo before as the primer to help the brazilain “take” better. Also mandatory in the flat iron portion… she keeps going until she feels a chemical change in the hair… maybe 5 times for me.. for others she says can be up to 15.. Also mandatory is dont wash hair for 3-4 days after treatment AND SULFATE FREE PRODUCTS. I can imagine of people are not using the brazilan products you are washing it right out of your hair after your application. Mine last up to about 4 months and that is actually just from grow out. I love it. My stylists pays close attention to the venilation whenever she does my application as well.

My eyes hurt, and my hair smelled like the product for the rest of the day.

Brazillian Blowout
4. Did you do it again? (Do you still do it?) Did your hair get dry and weird two months later, as ours did?
Yes, I just had it done for the second time. The first time it lasted about 10 months. I didn’t use the BB products, but the Organix line of shampoo and conditioner. My hair was shiny, healthy looking, and frizz-free in hot humid weather. As it started to wash out my hair didn’t start to frizz but it just wasn’t as pretty (although, much better then pre-BB).
This is the hair I have spent so much money trying and failing to get. Since getting my first BB I haven’t bought a single hair product other then shampoo&conditioner.
1. Did you do it at home or in a salon?: In a salon. Spent 400 bucks!!!
2. Did your eyes hurt/nose bleed/hair smell funny? Or did nothing bad happen?: Just when she put the product in and used the blow dryer, my eyes started to water. That was the worst part i guess.
3. What was it called: keratin styling, old standby “Brazilian” or something else?: Brazilian blowout.
4. Did you do it again? (Do you still do it?) Did your hair get dry and weird two months later, as ours did?: Got it done 3 weeks ago. Hair are manageable, but too limp for my liking. But, now when i wear my hair curly, the curls are smooth with no frizz! I guess the success of the Brazilian Blowout depends on the kind of hair you have. I have very curly hair, and it worked well for me. Use the purelogy shampoo and conditioner.
I have had the BB done 3 times in a salon. My hair looked great the first day. After that and everyday since, it looks like straw. It’s awful!! I hate it. My hair is so dry… So much worse than before. The first time it was great. The second time great until several weeks in, when the underlayer of my hair became very dry and looked like straw. I thought that meant the BB was wearing out. I’m so disappointed. I will NEVER do this again!!
BEST THING I’VE EVER DONE …. EVER. (to my hair at least)
Don’t do it. It’s poisonous. I had a bad reaction to it…
Not that I am saying everyone will have the same reaction, but it’s expensive and it hurts and my hair is still fizzy. Plus I have very bad dry scalp.. Burnt scalp actually…
Love your hair as it is.
I’ve had many brazilian blowouts and I LOVE the results…..it is totally worth the money…..prior to ever doing it, I could NEVER let my hair air dry, many hours of drying and ironing….I recommend it to anyone who had naturally frizzy hair…..I typically do it every 4 months, sometimes going as long as a year in between treatments….its made a difference in my hairs texture and manageability. I’ve had the same stylist for 10 years and for many years I would complain: “how can we put a man on the moon but don’t have the technology to manage frizzy hair???” Then a few years ago my hairdresser told me abt the blowout, naturally I was intimidated by the price and fear it wouldnt do anything, so it took my stylist a few months to convince me but when I finally gave in I was amazed at the results and extremely grateful for taking that chance!!!!!!!!!
I got this done about four years ago when I started middle school. My hair looks Great, and I Love, Love, Love it. But for some reason, it permanently made the ends of my hair bone straight.. to this day. So when I wash my hair now, everything is curly until I get down to my ends.. where it’s straight. And when I cut off the straight ends, they always grow back just as straight. So.. just a little curious about that. And another thing, ever since I got it done, my hair reeks when wet/ slightly damp. It’s annoying. I don’t want to go to the pool or anything, because I don’t want people to smell it.. the scent is almost like eggs. My mom told me it’d go away after a few days. It’s been four years.
I had a brazilian blow dry which was suposed to be formaldehyde free at Lisa Shepherd salon in London. Initially the result was quite nice but after a month my hair felt like straw, much worse than it was before the blow dry. Now there is nothing I can do to make my hair smooth and manageable.
I just had what was called at the salon a ‘Brazilian blowout’.
It’s been two weeks and even though I had to wait three days for it to ‘take effect ‘
My hair has been great. There was no eye burning or scalp burning. My stylist did put a mini fan
Near me but I think it was mostly because it was a really hot day. My hair is naturally very curly with no help from any product. I do believe that I am inclined more to straighten my hair now but now when my hair air dries it is slightly wavy rather than super curly. I don’t know if I would spend 160 on my hair every 4 or 5 months but I as always curious about the treatment.
Bottom line: so far,so good. Soft hair and didnt suffer for it. There seems to be so many different treatments. I guess I got lucky and got a decent non-torturous one.
I had my blowout done at a salon. It smelled terrible and took forever. It looked beautiful and shiny but it felt terrible from the beginning. After 3 days I felt stubble at the part line and knew my hair had been burned off. This was in January 2012 and it’s now May. I have had 5 inches cut off and I have 5 inches curly at the crown and everything below that is a straight dead disaster. I would never do this again and would caution anyone against it. I am going next week to have it cut short so I can start over with healthy hair.
