Where Do You Buy Your Natural Products?

When we blab about our favorite products, a question we get a lot is “But where can I even find that?!”—which is a totally fair followup; some of the lines we like, especially the smaller artisanal ones, can be hard to locate in person. I, for example, still have not found a perfume I love for everyday, and a reason for that is this very problem: I want to be able to go in and try a couple on, then go back a few days later to make sure I still like it.

There are amazing online retailers stocked with all our favorite brands, but sometimes, when you’ve run out of conditioner and your hair is a disaster, you need to just be able to walk into a place that sells something other than Pantene. And if it’s makeup you’re after, it’s nice to be able to sample a few blushes on the spot to pick the one you like best.

And so, we want to hear from you guys: Tell us where you get your natural products. Be as specific as you can (name, city or town, address or intersection if you want to get fancy with it) and write it in the comments. Tell us why you like it, or what it carries that you love, and if it’s an online shop, that counts too of course! We’ll compile a list and share it.

And if you are in the Philadelphia area, you can walk into juju salon & organics and get great organic brands including Ecco Bella, Max Green Alchemy, Sevi, Suki, and lots more! http://www.jujusalon.com

I’m going to start this one off with Los Angeles—my home. Then follow up with Montreal—my former home.

LA: I get a lot of basics at Whole Foods, but I also love Los Feliz health food store Nature Mart. For makeup I think I’ve made it pretty clear that Evolue is where it’s at: http://evoluebeauty.com/

Montreal: I haven’t check this place out yet but I was thrilled to read about it in the Gazette: http://bit.ly/cwAl4M
Sounds like it features a lot of local, clean brands.

Here in New York I love ABC Home’s apothecary section—it’s so pretty and well curated. For those who don’t know there’s like this great rather large natural beauty section on the ground floor there!

I also like the Union Square Whole Foods, and Spirit Beauty Lounge rocks my world. I just got a bunch of perfume samples from there and am hoping to find one I love.

I’m from Ottawa, Canada, and for anyone from here or visiting here, Oresta’s oranic spa and confectionary is AMAZING (www.oresta.ca). Thanks to her, my skin looks way better than it ever has, I’m greening my makeup routine, and I may have actually found a natural deodorant that works (gasp).
I’m looking forward to checking out some of the places suggested in New York City, since I’ll be there in October!

I don’t live in a big city so I order mostly online through suggestions of friends and other bloggers. I like Soapwalla (on etsy.com), Bubble and Bee and Pacifica for bath/body products. You might like the Pacifica products … they have great parfumes. I have no even started on switching my make-up but someone told me about Orglamix Cosmetics on etsy.com and I might try them.

I live in Minneapolis and I go to a co-op called The Wedge. They have a huge health and beauty section and really helpful people. Online, I buy from Sephora. Still looking around town for other places but the Wedge has everything I need so it hasn’t been a problem at all.

I usually go to Whole Foods at Columbus Circle, NYC. My online stores are Amazon (sunscreen, eyeliners, mascara) and Coastal Classic Creations (http://www.coastalclassiccreations.com). Coastal Classic Creations offers the ability to purchase sample sizes of products, like a few other natural beauty supply online stores. They also have deals on samples where you can purchase a little bag of makeup or a little bag of skin care products for a set price.

When I run out of my current supply of products I purchased online, I definitely want to head over to ABC Home’s apothecary.

In an unrelated note, I am SO excited to find out what the “consultations” button will do! Eeek!

I just moved to San Francisco and after hearing about your natural shampoo challenge, I went to Rainbow Grocery to pick put a shampoo and conditioner and found they had a lot to pick from and everyone who worked there was really helpful. They even sell some of the brands in bulk so you can bring back your bottle and fill it up for super cheap.

I bought Clarifying shampoo and conditioner from EO and I love it! I unfortunately bought it a couple of days after the last date to send in a photo but I still have learned so much from you ladies and this weekend played your interview on the Leonard Lopate show for my mom and she immediately ordered the book online.

So thank you for all of your research and hard work! It is much appreciated!!

Ha, we will reveal this next week! :)

Los Angeles: I really like Erewhon at Beverly and The Grove Dr(?). They have a great selection of products and it’s less expensive than Whole Foods. I love this shampoo in a bar by JR Liggett. I have dry, coarse hair. I also love Solar Rx sunscreen.

As a cofounder, I’m biased to Abe’s Market (www.abesmarket.com), but I love the platform it provides to all the small to mid sized brands and the passionate entrepreneurs behind those brands.

  15. Suzanne WIlson says:

Middle America, Tulsa, Oklahoma…Whole foods just off of Brookside, or Akins Natural Foods at 31st and Harvard.

  16. Elizabeth says:

I live in Milwaukee and many of the brands I like can only be ordered online since they are from another part of the country. Grateful body for skincare (San Francisco), Alima for makeup (Portland, OR). Otherwise I buy from Whole Foods or other local organic grocers for Dr. Hauschka mascara, Desert Essence body lotion, and John Masters shampoo and conditioner. Although, you can buy bulk sizes of JM shampoo and conditioner on his website so I will probably start doing that. Upurea is a great online boutique but also has a local brick and mortar close to me. they have a great perfum and makeup selection. Sephora is also a good one for Lavanila products. Love the lavender vanilla perfume! And it’s easy finding organic bar soap. Chivas has great goat milk soap, Beekman 1802 as well. I love their honey goat milk soap. Those I tend to order, but it’s easy to find Pangea organics soap as well as smaller companies that make theirs locally.

  17. Oh gosh, I buy and try all over, but Whole Foods is a frequent stop. Since my dream is to start my own natural beauty shop, I’m excited to see you all have trouble finding things and aren’t always up for ordering online because you want to try, try, try. For now, a lot of the online sites will send you samples, which is pretty cool. I used to work for NaturesBasin.com, and I think they do this, and SaffronRouge.com does as well, I believe. Around here, we have Sumbody stores, too, and their line is pretty natural. For perfume, I suggest you check out Ajne in Carmel the next time you’re in that area. The PR for them would probably LOVE to give you guys a tour (if I can find her info, I’ll hook you up). They do amazing all essential oil perfume blends, and will custom make you one in their store. They do this for some of the highest end spas around here. http://www.ajne.com/

I’m new to the book, and I still have not disposed of everything I have in my bathroom (mostly Origins, Aveda and Deva Curl Products).

My favorite place to shop EVERYTHING is whole foods. I like that they have testers for all of their skincare. My store closes at 10:00PM, Long Beach CA location, and I like to shop late… the perk is that it’s not crowded, however, no one can help you that late… but the times I’ve asked for help in that store they’re all very helpful. They have knowledge and, if they don’t, they look for someone who does.
I’ve found some of my new favorites there, like Alaffia’s Beautiful Curls Curl Enhancing cream -simply amazing! My deodorant, Herbal Clear Active Wear, super high performance! and my alva shaving cream -I mix it up with these-.

We get everything from 100%Pure. I have a teenage daughter and we love the fruit pigmented cosmetics! My daughter came in my room one day and said, “Mom, have you ever smelled your mascara? It’s delightful!”
We wholeheartedly recommend the products, cosmetics as well as skin care.

Neal’s Yard Remedies out of the UK now sells their products in the US under the name NYR Organic and through independent/personal consultants. I use and love all of their products. The have skin care, body care, hair care, men’s products, baby/kid’s products and just released their new certified organic make-up line. If you don’t already know a consultant, you can order online at http://www.us.nyrorganic.com/shop/usa. The best (and most pure, natural, certified organic) products I’ve ever used and I’ve tried a lot. The best part is, they work and do what they say will do. Plus, the company has incredible ethics.

  21. I buy online from http://www.YourOrganicLife.com. If I don’t have time to wait for an online order I buy from Natural Grocers or Whole Foods, but I prefer not to because so many of their products are “fake” natural products that are still loaded with synthetic toxic nasties.

Annie Kay’s Natural Foods and Eats Natural Foods… both in Blacksburg, Virginia! Blacksburg is in southwest Virginia, where Virginia Tech University is located. I love both stores because they are locally owned, and their stocks always surprise me in a good way :)

  23. Bella says:

Thank you all so much for the info:-) I normally buy stuff from amazon, but am looking forward to trying out the other websites and Whole Foods.

  24. Lindsay says:

Golden Path Alchemy’s website for all skin care- it’s a recent find for me and I’m beyond in love with their Purify facial steam, mask and the Purify and Refine serum mixed. Jane Iredale’s website for makeup. Really enjoy their eyeshadows.

  25. Lakshmi says:

I use products from Himalaya Herbals (http://www.himalayausa.com//Organique/home.htm). I use the shampoo, conditioner, night face cream, foot cream, stress massage oil. Love them!!!

  26. Danielle says:

I live in Toronto, Canada and have purchased a lot of products via websites in the states just cause the selection is so much better, but here in Toronto I love going to The Big Carrot (testers of everything & they will make samples of anything you ask for…skincare & makeup galore!).

I’m in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada so it’s EXTREMELY difficult to find good, clean products (especially makeup). I’m fine for now because I just moved back home from Edmonton and had revamped my bathroom cabinet before the move, but I’ve run out of mascara and am now using Cover Girl (eek!). I’m stuck with having to order online and pay shipping, brokerage and duty fees. Even then, I find that I have to research individual ingredients online myself (Skindeep but that doesn’t account for the data gap) and I can’t try new stuff before I buy….If anyone knows of a Canadian online retailer (so I can at least avoid the brokerage and duty), preferably western Canada (so the shipping is cheaper) that stocks only clean and safe products, I’d appreciate it.
On another note, I’ve been using Original Sprout 2 in 1 moisturizing hair and body wash (as shampoo, body wash and shave), conditioner, leave-in-conditioner and sunblock (it’s a little thick and hard to apply though). Their moisturizer is excellent but too strong-smelling for me. I order Bare Essentials foundation and the Sephora Naturals eyeshadow/blush compacts from Sephora.

I’m going to try the baking soda and ACV rinse on Friday!!! (I have to order your book so I don’t know the exact proportions….but I think I’ve gleaned enough info from all the articles I’ve read on here today. It’s my first visit!!!)

  28. Rebecca says:

Woah! Sorry, that was a long post. You have a site moderator, right? lol

I really love organic products like Dr. Alkaitis, Intelligent Nutrients and Kahina Giving Beauty. I also really like 100% Pure Cosmetics and Zuii Organic. All these great brands are available at http://www.BellaFloria.com, one of my favorites for online natural and organic beauty.
