What We Think of Paula Begoun

We keep getting asked this question so let’s make it official: We think Paula Begoun, the bestselling author of Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me who also has her own line of cosmetics, is an amazing researcher; we think she has done incredible things to empower women in their beauty choices; no, we have never tried her line; yes, we take issue with some of the ingredients in her line; and perhaps most important, we differ significantly with her take on the safety of some ingredients.

If you love her book, that’s awesome. We love her books too. We just don’t AGREE with them. That said, we think if we’d met her way back when, we’d have some things to talk about.

Have you read her books?

This post is so timely – I just checked out her book from the library and was totally disagreeing with her take on certain ingredients – I didn’t expect that. In the internet world of people super interested in what they’re putting on their bodies – her name is a constant. I’m going to keep digging through the book but so far, kind of disappointed. Still, it’s cool that there’s a swarm of us who are into safe cosmetics – maybe we can all work together to get that law passed.

I would never take beauty advice from someone who has had so much work done. That old book cover picture? She doesn’t even look like the same person.

I have to say Rebecca, who just put up that comment, that is hilarious. I agree, don’t take beauty advice from people on the nip-tuck diet.

To me, she lost credibility when she started selling her own skin care line. She’s not an impartial observer or objective critic of the industry anymore. I sometimes wonder if her criticisms of the growing natural and organic product market stem from her fear of competition.
