How to Make Your Own Beauty Products from Scratch

We’re talking favorite DIY recipes on GOOD today. Here’s a preview:

Let’s keep things simple this week. When it comes to personal-care products, we are big believers in streamlining what you use—see “Eight Products You Think You Need But Don’t” for a refresher—buying less in general, and getting creative. We have both always loved experimenting in our kitchens and our bathrooms, checking ingredients in products we love, isolating the main ones, and then trying them on their own. Sometimes it works: A favorite hair leave-in contained aloe, for example, so one day we tried aloe alone and found that, lo and behold, it worked just fine on its own. And sometimes it didn’t. Over the years we have tried dozens of DIY beauty recipes to find ones we like—and that work. Below are our favorite six. And the best thing about these is that none contains more than four ingredients, and chances are good you have them all in your kitchen already. So get cookin’ and if you have your own, be sure to share it in the comments.

Have been washing my face with raw honey since I read your book, LOVE IT!!! I have now started using Manuka honey to help with my very oily/acne skin due to pregnancy/nursing, and it seems to be working miracles. Also started using argan oil, I think the combination of the two is what has improved my skin drastically. Thankyou!!!! Love what you guys are doing.

love the idea of the baking soda + honey face scrub… but can it be made in advance and refrigerated? maybe make it once a week?

I want to know more about manuka honey! What do you do with it? We should investigate and post about it, but fill us in would you? Where do you get it?

  6. Triska says:

From what I’ve read, the Manuka bush is a highly medicinal shrub that is twinned with the tea tree, so it works well on oily skin. The key ingredient is non-hydrogen peroxide, which is the equivalent of a natural antiseptic solution. It comes only from New Zealand.
I just wash my face with it like a normal face wash, its a bit sticky, but works wonders. It doesnt dry my skin out, and seems to be reducing acne scars, and helping with breakouts.
I live in Canada, and the brand I use is Wedderspoon. I just get it from organic supermarket, located beside the other honeys. My jar is the highest activity number available (16+)
There are other companies that claim to have a higher number (20+, 25+, 30+) But according to Wedderspoon these ammounts arent found in nature and are created by exposing the honey to extremely high temperatures.
Information can be found at http://www.wedderspoon.com

I use manuka honey to wash my face as well. I wet my face with warm water, and I use a small dab of honey, less than half a teaspoon, rub it around on my face and rinse. It’s my night routine. In the morning a quick rinse and moisturise. Sometimes I use my clairsonic gadget for some extra exfoliation.

I’ve been soap/cleanser free for over 2 years, and I switched to honey only about 8 months ago. I have been fortune to have a great complexion, for man years. (yay for clean, healthy, veggie diet and lots of water) however, I had much redness and inflammation – which I’m happy to say has gone away with the switch to honey.

More often than not I don’t wear much make up anymore. And I feel just as beautiful!
