Do You Change Products With the Seasons?

You know you’re in deep when you sit around seriously contemplating the merits (and risks!) of a seasonal moisturizer switch, and yet here I am. It’s autumn in New York and for the first time in my life I’m wondering if the weather will necessitate some product switches. Deep stuff.

Lately my hair’s been feeling a little dry, which is very unusual for me, and my face has as well. But I’m a believer in consistency with skincare, knowing that when I switch my products too much, the risks often outweigh the benefits. What if I get a rash? Or break out? Or discover a new allergy to an essential oil? Of course these things happen far less with the natural organic products I use, but you never know. And yet…

I refuse to change my nighttime Kahina argan oil ritual because my skin loves it, and it’s become part of how I unwind before bed. But will I be trying a new night cream on top of it? Day lotion? Conditioner? Looking that way.

What about you? Do you notice seasonal changes in your skin and hair? Do you adjust your regimens?

  1. Yes, I absolutely switch up my routine to cater to the seasons. If you live on the West Coast, weather changes can be minimal (not always, but in SoCal it can be 78 on Christmas…) so you may not need to, but living in severe weather conditions in the Midwest (where I am) where there is snow, dry air and freezing temps….you need to kick things up a notch. I definitely use more body oil, body butters and creams in winter and ultra-hydrating lip balms – I can’t get enough! And I also change my skin care regimen to more high-powered day and night moisturizers for dry skin (and I most definitely switch to a cream facial cleanser, instead of anything foaming).

Oh come on, worst movie ever made??? Sure it was ridiculously sappy and depressing…. but not the worst movie of all time. :)

Try taking a bit of your face oil – just like 2 drops – rub it between your hands just a little and just press it onto your face in the morning. Don’t rub, just press. It’ll soak up pretty quick, especially with that little amount, but it’ll get you through the day.

I change my products for the winter. I live in the south, where humidity reigns supreme. When winter rolls around, that layer of water (and extra moisturizing) is gone, and my scalp goes in a frenzy. Every winter I have to buy dandruff-shampoo. I actually bought my bottle today, I’m going to try l’oreal nature’s therapy scalp relief treatment shampoo. Haven’t tried this brand before, I usually use selsun blue but it’s stinky.

I’m already pretty good about moisturizing with lotion, so that department doesn’t need the help. Maybe using a good make-up, like a foundation that’s good for your skin that isn’t drying? My favorite is neutrogena healthy skin. It gives my skin a dewy look.

I have a horrible time with getting breakouts when the seasons change. Whether it’s going from Fall to Winter or Winter to Spring, I normally have to deal with a whole 3 weeks of acne. My face is insanely oily, and highly intolerable of moisturizer. The only moisturizer that seems to work for me is pure Aloe Vera Gel. Its light weight and feels really refreshing. I use it just before bed in the summer and occasionally morning and night in the winter. When my skin gets dried out from the cold temperatures and all the anti-acne products I need to use during the season switch, the Aloe Vera helps alleviate some of the flakiness and that annoying tight feeling.

I have to switch face powder during seasonal changes too. Usually, I swear by the oil absorbing Mattify Ultra Powder because it’s the only powder that will keep me shine free for more than an hour. But, when the temperatures start shifting, I need to switch to the Mattify Sensitive version. It doesn’t absorb oil quite as well – my face seriously is an oil slick all the time – but basically I just accept that I’m going to look like hell for about 6 weeks of every year. My skin’s transition into Winter finally seems to be complete for this year. YAY!!
