Summer Hair Challenge: The Results Are In!
For new readers, we announced a hair challenge last week—natural shampoo and conditioner, no heat, no products, then say cheese. Well, the results are in and they are amazing. Look at all of these beautiful women! And Jordan! And Conall! We can’t believe how many of you did it—among them Alexandra’s sister (see if you can guess which one she is), three of Siobhan’s cousins, our lit agent, our book editor, a bunch of friends, and a whole lot of strangers. What we can believe, however, is how fabulous and pretty you all look.
Many of you expressed surprise at how good your hair looked when you didn’t mess with it, which was sort of the point. In the next few days we will share some of your individual stories as inspiration. But for now, it’s picture time, so enjoy!

Wow! Our hair looks fantastic!
Never would have known that everyone was foregoing conventional products.
90% white?
We agree—these girls are adorable but more diversity please!
I thought it was a cool project, i am trying to swear off dying my hair too, because of the nasty chemicals and also the damage it does to my hair. So I expect that if I were to do this in a year and compare, my hair would look even more awesome.
I don’t think it’s the fault of the website that 90% of the respondents are white. If you wanted diversity, you probably should have sent in your photo.
That being said, I think everyone looks awesome, and they probably exceeded their own expectations.
Wow, awesome! We look pretty great :D
As a black woman who is not rocking natural hair, it is impossible for me to just wash and go as I need those chemical products, so I understand the lack of women of color in this spread. However, congrats to everyone who did that especially the curly haired ladies, you rock!
My picture isn’t there… *pout*
Oh no! We may have to give you your own post along with a few gals who sent the pics late. :)
Everyone looks great! I’ve been using nothing but henna, cloves, and lemon juice to dye my hair for the last 6 months, and it’s gotten thicker, stronger, and healthier since the change! I have been using nothing but natural shampoo and conditioner once a week for almost 2 years, and starting last week, I even stopped using that. I now wash my hair once a week with baking soda, and then I use apple cider vinegar to condition. My hair looks incredible, and it’s all natural. I couldn’t ask for anything more!
I had been arguing with my close friend on this issue for quite a while, base on your ideas prove that I am right, let me show him your webpage then I am sure it must make him buy me a drink, lol, thanks.

These pics simply reaffirm why I “do” use heat to style my hair. These women have GORGEOUS hair, I am just that much more jealous after looking at the pics:) I have fine, thin, curly/wavy/frizzy hair. I have been trying to wear it curly more often to cut back on damage, but it is just so uneven…a curl here, a wave here, frizzy there. Any suggestions for natural alternative for thin, wavy/curly hair???
Thanks…you women all look AMAZING!!!
